You get to meet so many interesting people.

Take, for example, Monday, when a slightly-crazy, conspiracy-theorist hitchhiker walked into the library with his fisherman's hat and bungee-corded-shut backpack of stuff, asked me where the best hotels nearby would be, chatted about the weather, and then went off for roughly ten minutes on how food and drink corporations are preparing us for "the system". There were a few moments there where it was suddenly difficult to not keep a straight face and not laugh, just due to how surreal it was.

And today, though this happened before my shift, apparently a woman walked in with her boyfriend, they had some sort of minor dispute, and the woman proceeded to go up to many different members of the staff (mostly female workers) and asked them if they thought she looked like a, quote, "fat b****", unquote. But I don't want anyone to think unfairly of her, as she did have a very good excuse for this:

She was high.

So, like I said, interesting people.

Yes. Everyone's pretty nice and my manager's awesome, but this is my first job (and a part-time one), so I don't know how it compares to other ones.

The size of a city block. Four floors and four basements, though only two floors are actually open to the public.

Apparently one of the basements is haunted, too.

How did you get to work in a public library? I searched around mine and all positions seem to require degrees (often Masters).

I have a part-time job that's only open to college students that I started a little over a month ago. Right now, I do the sorting and shelving that everyone does, and I just got done training at the checkout desk at the back of the building, so I'm probably going to go train at the drive-up next.

There's more to it than just checking out and shelving books and helping people all day, I hope you know that. Librarians have a lot of responsibilities and they need to have knowledge on a lot of stuff. I'm not saying you're stupid or too incompetent for the job, but there's a reason why librarians have to go to school and earn a degree in order to get the position.

This.

Except I'm just a part-time Circulation Aide and I don't really need to know a lot of stuff, I get to just send people to Information if it's not something simple.

I like not having to deal with the public and most of my co-workers in my job. I can't stand small talk, I would've told them I don't have the time to chat and leave.

I deal with librarians in my line of work, so i know exactly what they have to do, and the qualifications it requires smilie

I actually applied at college to get the first step towards a degree but they had no vacancies.

Ah, okay. I just wanted to make sure because a lot of people seem to assume that the job is easy, and since you were considering it I just wanted to make sure you actually knew what you would be getting into lol

Aww man that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully something opens up for you soon.

I've tried since i left school, and nothing came, so i decided to call it quits.

I actually asked the local librarian, who's a friend of my aunts if she could put a word in at the council, you'd think i'd spat in her face by the look she gave me.

I thought that i could have gotten a little experience before applying for the degree course.

Clearly she wasn't the helpful type.

New Update at the Amazmo Library:

Now I wasn't actually present while this was happening, I was at the other end of the building, but apparently sometime today two girls were near the main entrance to the library, and one of the girls started beating the other with a plastic "Wet Floor" sign.

I don't even.
