I'm all for it, but it would be ridiculously expensive and we have far too many issues to deal with at home before we can talk about colonizing elsewhere. Perhaps the most important thing to do before going into the stars is abolish the idea of nations competing against each other in races to get farther to space, or to have the biggest guns, or even the most land. Also to not look at other people in our own back yard as different or lesser. Doing something as monumental as moving even a few people to a new planet requires us to view ourselves less as "Americans" or "Russians" or "British", and more as a single human race like we actually are.

A lot of the social issues we have today; racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and wealth classes; have to be pretty much nonexistent if we want this to work in the long run.
