Yeah but you also have to remember that they were both spoiled brats used to getting anything they wanted. They eventually learn their lessons and become more lovable and humble people. Gaston was pretty much consumed by the idea of marrying "the most beautiful girl in town," not even caring about her interests.
His borderline obsession literally killed him.

^Spoilers, if somebody has actually never seen the movie..

Wait, Kuzco never ends up with anybody. He gains a friend in Pacha but I don't think there was ever any romantic interest in anyone.
