Nintendo really does need to step up with their third party relations and develop their next console to be gimmick-free and not a generation behind.

^They need to step up their relations with Western third party companies. They're doing just fine with Japanese third parties, as seen with Namco and Sega being best buds with them now.

Also if you want a more modern example of a mature Nintendo game there's Bayonetta 2, which unlike Conker was published by the company itself.

The whole 'a generation behind' thing doesn't really matter does it? As long it entertains people.

^It actually can be a problem when games are getting so advanced and complex that Nintendo's new machine already can't handle them. DICE and Crytek won't develop their games for Wii U because they would have to be downgraded to a ridiculous amount (or in some instances, just won't run period). And people already complain as it is that games are being downgraded on PS4 and X1 compared to their PC counterparts (see: Watch Dogs). Imagine having to compromise even more power and ability to get those games on Wii U.

They're a generation behind in that many of the big games coming out for the other consoles will never see themselves on Wii U. As a result, the Wii U instead feels like a secondary console, in that even if you have one, you'll probably still need PS4/X1/PC to play most of the big games of the generation. Nintendo should be striving to be the definitive and only system you need, not simply one that you have partnered with another system.

Nintendo needs to keep doing what Nintendo has been doing for over 100 years that has kept them stable as a company.

And that is... not listen to what the naysayers on the internet are crying about.
A Nintendo system with only Nintendo games will do just fine. The N64 and the GameCube proved that. Both systems made Nintendo a lot of money (has Microsoft's Xbox division actually came out of the red yet?). Both systems have some of the highest praised classic games (OoT, Wind Waker, Mario Kart 64).

Nintendo is a company that survives.

This is true, but unless they want to be looked at as the underdog compared to Microsoft and Sony by developers and a portion of consumers, they need to step their game up.

Watchdogs didn't sell **** while Smash Bros made millions during its first week.

Watch Dogs is a new IP that didn't get rave reviews like people were expecting it to. Watch Dogs also wasn't a franchise that hasn't seen a release in 6 years.
