No, more like "spent" or "invested" rather than "wasted".

HA, my wife is exactly the same, though she does often find and buy for me skylanders and traps i need when she goes shopping with friends.
i've learned it pays to have an accurate and up to date "wants list" on the fridge hahaha.

Yes definitely. If I had known then what I know now I wouldn't have purchased anywhere near so many. Although in fairness my boys have purchased at least half of the ones we own with their own pocket money, and they've had fun hunting for them. But even they have realised that 50% of our collection never get used and have stopped buying new ones.

I think those people who only buy their favourite few each release have the right idea. Certainly that's what I wish I had done.

Interesting to hear people refer to them as an 'investment'. An argument could be mounted for them being an investment in feeling good, entertainment etc. But with the exception of some rare figures most plummet in terms of dollar value after only a few months. So I don't imagine that anyone would believe their collection to be a good financial investment.

My Skylanders will be an investment, to me, as long as I will be able to play as them, and hopefully increase their levels and stats, in future games.

I didn't just bought a toy, I bought a new playstyle that will make me enjoy all the titles from now on even more. smilie

Hindsight is always 20/20.

if i had known then that there would still be certain figures available at almost half the price 6 moths later i would have waited to buy them.

on the flip side, there are just as many figures, if not more, that i have only seen on the day they were released, and never again.

So what you lose on the swings you make up on the roundabouts, as the saying goes.

It's good that you can view them that way. I can with many of ours, but others just don't get used and I shouldn't have purchased them. But I wasn't to know that at the time.

I think I would feel differently if there was more content. If the games were longer and older Skylanders somehow stayed more relevant. But with the constant nerfing and buffing from game to game and the focus on gimmick characters my earlier characters just seem to not get used. The enormous number of new character releases in TT has really drove that home to me.

I think back to my days in World of Warcraft, and I still think "Man, I actually enjoyed that a little.", in hindsight it was rather squandered, but it was enjoyable for me.

I look to my Skylanders, cringe a little at how much I've spent, and then think "Hold on, I made this decision, I bought these of my own free will, and I'm glad I bought them."

It's physical goodies, it's things you can look at, touch, and display, these are all positives for me.

I understand what you are saying, and even if I try to play with all the characters I have (all the Cores and gimmick characters from the first three games and a bunch from Trap Team, excluding all the reposes ever made and the variants) it's normal that I tend to use the newer characters more, for a matter of upgrading and leveling.

You are right about a lack of content for Trap Team, Skylander's wise, it doesn't bother me that much, but I can see why it would annoy other persons.
However, I tend to think that games (with all their problems and positive aspects) are just a temporary thing; as long as they keep supporting older characters in future games, the Skylanders will be the truly permanent part, and will have the possibility to be improved (or ruined) in future chapters of the series.

They should definitely enstablish a stable game and physic engine, though, so they won't change that much, from game to game.

Periodically I do think about wasted money, but it's not my 'collection' that I view as a waste, its certain characters that I just don't like or variants I have. So far with Trap Team, only HeadRush and Funny Bone have been regretful purchases (well and buying two of each gems, I should haveo nly got one magic, no water, one tech, and maybe extra life & undead).

But live and learn, I refuse to buy everything now, and make sure I'm getting something I 'want' (I admit, Head Rush was a impulse BOGO sale purchase, as was funny bone)

I think the idea of waste in this case would be purchases that are made and never enjoyed. Hours and hours and hours of sharing these adventures with my family, whether playing or watching others, is well worth the investment.

Ok, building on my earlier statement.

For me, I have all my skylanders on this wall ridge thing in my room, all 200+ of those guys. Everytime I come home and open my door, I see all of them sitting there and cant help but smile every time. This is because my skylanders have become almost like a little family and they all hold so many memories, on bad days I can pick one up and remember the day I got them, how excited I was to be adding them to the family, maybe it was one I hunted for a long time and finally got my hands on like wham-shell, I didnt like him til I got him, but he was 1 of 3 I had left to get in ssa and when I found him i nearly cried from happiness.

I know I have easily spent $3000-$4000 on all them total and thats a bit hard to think about at times. Even though it was a huge investment I just cant find any regret about them. And thats all likely caused by the fact that skylanders have always made me happy, the only one that thinks its a waste is my mom... but shes never been the collector type so she doesnt understand how it feels to have that sense of achievement whenever I complete a series.

On another note, back in ssa I had been hunting sunburn with a friend, we both wanted him so badly, we went into a best buy and were at first disappointed to see nothing there, but upon closer inspection there were 2 dragons peak adventure packs tucked away in the very back of the shelf, her and I had a mini spaz attack and pretty mush ran to the registers with those 2, at another store we checked that day I found another when, and I impulsed bought him for the path. come mid summer I was visiting my dad, he lives about 2 hours away so I rarely get to see him and I was heading back home, I live in wisconsin and we only have 2 seasons here, winter and construction. So the main roads were torn up and I got sent on a side rode that was about to be torn up too and they had gravel over a paved road. Long story short my car lost traction and I ended up rolling my car. I had to spend a week down with my dad to recover but had lost my glasses in the accident, I am very blind and need them for everything. Now I had nothing to do sitting there so I became determined to play skylanders... and failed, so I set it on easy and pulled out the spare sunburn, he had nothing done on him at that point, I found out that I could actually see him because of his bright colors and managed to be able to play, I spent that week doing every heroic challenge I had available on him, to this day I have the strongest bond with him, he is so special to me.

On topic: I love everyone of my Skylanders, and wish I had a better way to display them. All I have now is a junky 3 drawers to hold all of them. Ooooh, I surely understand that.

My Skylanders truly are a second family, a group of friends that never talks, but always listen.

Not afraid to say I often speak to them, when playing.

I would just like to pay them more respect.
All my Cores from the first three games are jammed inside a transparent container, with the risk of scratching and damaging each other.
The gimmick characters are inside the drawers of a little moving cupboard:
- the Swappers are in the lowest drawer;
- the Giants and Trap Masters are in the second to last one;
- the traps inside the trap holder (which fits perfectly) are inside the second.
All the characters I'm currently upgrading and leveling are on the top of the cupboard, which still has enough space to also host the Portal.

Would really like a display cupboard, though, with a glass, so I can see them but they won't get covered in dust. smilie

I guess that people dont understand before picking the game up is that it does take a bigger investment. Skylanders isnt cheap, if you wanna get the most out of it, you need to throw money into it. if you dont want to do that... then its not the game for you and you should try something else.

But that's not true for everybody, because not everybody gets the same buzz from wasting, oh sorry "investing", money in buying every character.

You can finish the entire game with less than a 1/4 of the characters & traps they are releasing in TT. And if you buy > open gates > return characters then you can get through the whole thing with even less. So how is that not getting the most out of the game?

You could almost argue that if a person feels that they have to buy every character to get the most out of the game then it's not the game for them and they should try something else that their addictive personality isn't going to waste a small fortune on.

I never said you had to get them all to enjoy it now did I? what I meant by that is an HONEST person who doesnt return USED merchandise will have to spend an additional $200+ outside of the $75 for the starter pack to 100% trap team alone. I dont care if it saves money returning a used item like a skylander is wrong. I have purchased 4 of my skylanders that have been previously used, so some greedy person could get their kicks and get their money back.

I think it all comes down to perspective.
If you don't find value in the figures as toys to play with, or as figures to display, and just add their price to the overall cost of a skylanders game, then it is definitely not worth it, not even close, not by a long shot.
There is no game that has ever been made that is worth the price paid for each of the Skylanders instalments, even if you just buy the bare minimum to open all areas.

If someone has an addictive personality in relation to collecting (like me) if its not Skylanders, then they are going to find something else on which to spend their time searching for and money on.

I can honestly say that i have actually saved an awful lot of money buy collecting the skylanders figures, bare with me on this, because when i have seen a new line of trading cards, or movie/tv series figures, or other toys, i've told myself, "no, i don't wanna start that, i want to get the skylanders from the upcoming wave" and in pretty much all cases the things i have passed up on have ended up being more than double the overall cost of what i end up spending on the particular skylanders game.

sure, there is always the path of not spending money, but where is the fun in that, as i said, i have a "collectors personality", its why i like this franchise so much.

all of that said though, i actively advocate the minimalistic and open gate/adventure pack>return figure approach to my friends and family, though only a couple are actually interested in or have time for video games.

it is very easy to justify buying if you like them and want to buy them, and just as easy to justify not buying if you don't want to.
i don't think anyone should really need to justify their choices, "i don't want to" or "because i like them" are just as valid arguments in my mind as epic novelisations.

Activision is in the business of ripping money out of their customers and they do it very well. They certainly have received their fair share from me.

What are soul gems for? To get kids to nag their parents for more toys. Good marketing ploy but hardly ethical so I sleep fine at night treating them they same way.

But that being said I wouldn't return a used Skylander. Because I don't count a Skylander that hasn't left the packaging, hasn't leveled up and hasn't spent anymore than a few seconds as 'used' anymore than it would be if you placed it on one of the demo portals in the shops.

But you're right you didn't say 'every' character. You just implied that only those that are prepared to spend $250+ should buy the game and everyone else should go do something else.

^I like this, ALL OF THIS^ If it ain't one thing it's another, and at least I'm not spending $40 (conservative low number) each on Marvel and DC maquettes and busts that don't do anything other than sit there, and kids would get in trouble for touching! Now with skylanders, I get my enjoyment in looks and collecting, and they also have a purpose the kids can use playing in a game.. We all blow money for some type of enjoyment, at least this is something we agree on as a family.. Technically anything that is bought that isn't a necessity could be considered wasting money!
