I find the lack of understanding of the law here quite upsetting.

We have been through all this before and nothing has changed.

You can't copyright or patent the SHAPE of a figure.

They can protect the 3D models, the artwork and logos. They can patent code and files.

They CAN NOT protect in any way the shape of the figure. LEGO fought this in court and lost. Trust me, if LEGO lost Activision have NO HOPE.
Yes, LEGO LOST. Other companies can produce plastic bricks with the same dimensions as LEGO with no fear of legal threats. They are only in trouble if they put a copyright logo etc on the bricks saying "LEGO".
If it's ok to make plastic bricks exactly the same size and shape as an existing plastic brick then making a physical thing shaped like a non-physical 3D model is no problem.

Before anybody comes back with "Well I THINK" or "In my OPINION" please try to find a fact or some actual legal reason to back it up. I find it hard to believe that people have such a problem with this yet pay $6 (or £6!!!) for a plastic trap that costs approx 40c to make when Activision even have said they won't make villain figures so it's not like he is taking anything away from their sales!

He hasn't said it's going to be a production line or selling in any quantity at all so why is everybody jumping on him?

I think people need to relax and stop drinking the media industry kool-aid so much.

Just to quickly add, I am not commenting on the legality of adding the chips. I can tell you though it's completely legal to take the chip out of a trap you bought and modify it to work in a normal figure.

...Well in that case, let the guy commission his figures, people! Also, I don't exactly know how putting the trap chips in the figures would work in game. Would the villain timers be made to work like health bars or something?

Not relevant to the chip and figure stuff, but as for the timer health bar thing, it could use the same coding/principle as The Gulper's Villain Quest, because in that quest instead of the timer going down, it goes down when he gets hit by an enemy. So it is already in the game somewhere.

Okay, but what if the timer maxes out then?

No one is saying they're going to buy any of the figures, and since he said he's going to post WIP pics (as well as the finished products), it's safe to say that people aren't going to throw money at him - at least until he has proven that he has actually managed to produce the figures for himself. People are just enthusiastic about which villains they would like to see a figure of, that's all.

Phoenix Crystal is the best unreleased Crystal.
Skylanders Academy Season 2 was an improvement.
I don't know what to think of Skylanders' future.

I dont feel like he has any worry of legal action <.< didnt we have someone one here who articulated skylanders and even kept the chip working and sold them on ebay? Idk if he is still around, it was Jin something or other (Im bad with names) Anywho my point is he took already existing figures and altered them and sold them without trouble so i dont see why someone putting a chip in a custom made figure that isnt an acti produced figure would be a problem

Editing the timers is something that can only be done with in game hacking. If he can do that is up to him, I can't say but the timer is not held on the figure at all.
The Wii for one I know is easily hackable and the PS3 probably too. So while the legality of that bit is totally up for debate it is certainly possibly for some hardware.

If the Trap chip is correctly modified it will work on the portal as normal. The game wouldn't know any difference and it wouldn't matter. You just wouldn't be using the special trap slot and would have 2 figures like 2 player mode. That's it.

The legality of producing these in any quantity and selling them? That is certainly a stickier issue than making a few for yourself. As long as they are not represented as "Skylanders" in any way however strictly speaking it's still legal. I will stay away from any morality debate.

As for "new to the forum"... Is it wrong to give people the benefit of the doubt? I was once an eager new to the forum person too.

Actually, the funny thing about this whole deal is that Kaos and Chompies were going to actually have figures before they were scrapped.

This is something that's made me wish I did get a 3D printer, though I don't have the models and am pu-pu when it comes to 3D modeling.

But so far for me, Painyatta is a MUST.

I have a 3D printer on the way soon. I might try printing a figure to see how it looks. After acetone treating the outside to remove ridges it would be ok, but need painting. I suck at painting!

Yeah, same here.

The problem with 3D printing figures though is you need to have models - or you're just 'copying' existing models using a capture tool. I've been wanting to do my own verison of Ghost Roaster for a while now - in his skull attack form...even try and make it look like a lightcore.

Have fun with the printer though, uh that is such a DIYer/Weekend Warrior dream.

Yeah, just stealing a 3D mesh or scanning a figure in is easy, but not as good as modelling your own.

I know some people that are 3D games designers who could probably knock together some nice objects smilie

I scanned HotHead into a 3D object a while back. The Mesh needs some touch-up but he isn't 3D printable by a long shot, not many of them are on home printers.

UV Cured Resin printers could do most of them easily though. The old squirty-melty-plastic printers have limits.

Now if someone released some 3d models on one of those sites like www.thingiverse.com or something. that would be awesome. i'd be totally happy and fine with that. cause itd be free. nobody would be profiting, and people would just have toys to print. nobody gets hurt. theyd all be acts of art fandom and joy towards the world of skylanders.

pryofer, i never give anyone on the internets the benefit of the doubt. like ever. smilie especially if they talk about money.
