Turning up the portal sound makes some skylanders not read right!

Well when I turn up the sound on the portal to 70 (it's set at 50 out of the box, and you can change it in the setting) makes it so some of my giants do not read if they are in the center of the portal and there is a bad guy in at the same time. Seems the sound draws a lot of power out of the portal.

Yah just thought this was an interesting find, as it seems if you turn up the sound in the settings on to portal some of the giants will not work in the center of the portal, but when the sound is turned back down they work just fine. This only seems to happen if the sound is turned up past 50 and you have a trap in and put a giant on the center of the portal.

Sorry about that, also it only seems to happen with some of them, and only when a trap it put in too.

Edit: just tried the portal from my Wii U dark version (playing on my ps4, only got Wii U dark to have both normal and dark skylanders) and there seems to be no problem with the Wii U portal at all. I can turn up the sound to 100 and it works fine. Looks like I need to send in my PS4 portal for a replacement... (well I will do that when I have some down time, no rush as I have 2 portals.

Interesting. Most of my figures were fine on my PS4 portal; Scarlet Ninjini was my only problem. I was going to exchange her, but I'll have to give this a try first.

My Legendary Bouncer does not agree with the new portal., I have to lay him down. Also, when I played SSF with the new portal, there were consistent random "disconnects" where the game thought I removed my skylander and immediately reloaded it.

My SSA portal has done the "disconnecting" thing too... :/

the "disconnecting" thing can mean two things. the first can be bad soldering joints in the portal, the second can be to much data being processed/low memory that make game portal tilt. cause is bug/glitch in code, system hardware limitations or a mix of both.

Hmm, my thoughts are that maybe the Traptanium Portal isn't receiving enough power, since this problem only seems to affect Giants, which use Lightcore elements. Has anyone tried hooking up a separately powered USB hub to their console, and hooking the portal up to that?

Hooking up an independently powered USB hub shouldn't have any effect as the USB dongle at the end of the portal's cable should never be able to pull more power than USB's design maximum. I have some devices which require more power than what a single USB port can provide and appropriately have more than one USB plug at the end of the cable so that they can double up on power consumption. I too think that the Traptanium Portal suffers from not being fed enough power to properly run everything, but unless someone mods theirs or Activision puts out a new version with two plugs, there isn't any way to get more power flowing into it.

This is true in most of the time, but some Game systems do not supply as much power to the ports as a PC. Meaning if activision expected all the systems to give out the same power at max power they might be wrong... For example the Wii U needs a 2 USB Y cable to run a external hard drive that can be run on a PC with only 1 cable, as the Wii U has a lower max power cap then a PC.

Nope, I'm talking about the specifications of the hardware that the portal uses to connect to any gaming system. USB ports are limited to a maximum of 5V and will push power at 500-900mA for standard USB 2 or 3 ports and can push up to 2.1A on certain special ports (normally used only in Macs) that allow charging of high powered devices like the iPad. While the Wii U might require certain devices to use two plugs, in general any device you attach via USB that needs more power than described above will need a secondary plug to go into another USB port to pull additional 5V at whatever amperage the ports are running at.

Maybe not in total, but on a port for port basis, yes, they do so long as the ports are the same type (USB 2, USB 3, etc.). The only thing that computers currently have over consoles in the USB port power department is that some computers (usually Macs) will have a single USB port that can push power at 2.1A to allow devices like the iPad charge. Such ports might have been incorporated in some of the newest consoles, but if they were, I'm haven't seen any documentation on it. Unless your console is defective in some way, its USB ports should output 5V at 500-900mA (depending on if it's USB 2 or 3) consistently, no matter who manufactured the console. Based on what a lot of folks have been saying about the new portal, it's possible that Activision and TfB pushed the power requirements for the new portal right up to the limit.

Also there is no "Wii U portal" all portals with the exception of the xbox 360, and 3ds portals are the same. What it turns out is that the portal that came with my PS4 is defective (and does not work right if I turn up the portal sound) I have plugged the portal that came with my Wii U dark version in to my PS4 and it works just fine.
