Curious to know if the doing the quest for Riot Shield Shredder/Outlaw Brawl and Chain causes them to have the same colors as their regular evolved counterparts or if they retain some color difference?

They do not appear to change whatsoever, they simply get an "Evolved" tag along with their variant tag.

Phoenix Crystal is the best unreleased Crystal. Skylanders Academy Season 2 was an improvement. I don't know what to think of Skylanders' future. |

Even though variant villains evolve, they still remain trapped in Traps for life?

Although variant villains are already captured in their trap before you even put it in the portal, you can still use that trap to capture any enemy of matching element or transfer an enemy of the matching element from the villain vault. When you want to use the variant villain again after having a different villain in the trap, you need to capture or transfer that specific villain and the variant of the character will appear. It only works with the original trap the variant came in. Once you evolve any character while they are in a trap, using that villain in that specific trap will always make them appear evolved. That will always remain and can't be undone.
