Possible reference in Monster Marsh?

When in the level "Monster Marsh", in the village there is a Mabu named "Krueger" who after waking up, will say "I must not fall asleep... I must not fall asleep... oh I had better not be dreaming right now." I think this is a possible reference to A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Most definitely. I grew up with that franchise.

Also, there's an ancient song from 1962 called "Monster Mash". IMO the level name harkens back to this song.

Oh yeah, I remember that song! The name does seem to closely match the levels name. And the theme of the level fits too.
