I played the tablet version *mini review* [CLOSED]

i just downloaded the free tablet version on my ipad air ios8. it was 1,29gb included the first chapter and two characters (it was pretty much just a demo). when it comes to the menus in the game, they looks very empty and it looks like stuff are missing. i started the game and was met with a cgi movie that was horrible pixelated. after that i entered the game, i must say the touch controls is not good for any games, you must have a proper controller to play this. but with that said it was after all a free demo of the game, and not the console version so something must give.

even if its a cut down version i cant say the first chapter was any good, its very shallow and very easy even for a kid game. when it comes to the trap master snap shot animation i didn't like it, the character walked like one foot was shorter than the other and was very slow. also snap shot and food fight was more white than blue and green, it didn't help make things better. the next thing that i found was element gates, these have now been put behind the paywall and could only be opened by trap masters. after 3 games and now this, it just hit me straight away as a very stupid idea and very irritating. because there is no point in using the core anymore. a combo of the trap masters and villain is all you need for this game. i walked around in the game and used some bounce pads, i didn't see the point in them, after all i could jump now. why have them in the game?, and then limit my jumping to make the bounce pads useful, dont make sense at all.

after smashing stuff and collecting coins i did find the mystery elements gates that was locked. it was 3 locked gates already in the first chapter, and i said to myself. this is gonna be very short game and lo and behold, before i know it i arrive to the boss. now its gonna be some challenges i hoped but there was none the boss fight was non existent. after that i was thrown to the shop and asked to buy more of the game...

no way i was gonna use money on this thats for sure. this was pretty much it for the first chapter, i felt really bored, where was the skylanders magic??... anyway i decided to play the chapter one more time to see i had missed something. then i discovered i couldn't skip anything of the talking and the repeating cut scenes. what the heck???... is this only on the tablet or is it like this in the console versions to?...

so i turned the game off and deleted it from my ipad. the whole experience just left a sour taste in the mouth.... now with that said this was only the demo, maybe it get better on the console version, i dunno but what i played on the tablet was not looking promising thats for sure.

The first chapter of ANY skylanders adventure is hardly exciting. It's meant more for general introduction to the plot and characters. Frankly I'm hoping they get rid of these "introduction" levels and throw you in the mix from the beginning. Why wait 8 chapters to create some tension?

There is no positive point in your review so I'm guessing this game is 0/10.

when you introduce someone to your new game i thought it was of most important to amaze people. but here they did the opposite. and when you're being thrown to the shop and asked to buy more, its pretty arrogant... it was not a pleasant experience...

i feel sorry for kids that get stuck with the tablet version and the touch controls, its a huge downgrade to the console version. and these element gates that have been put behind the paywall. will sure not make the parents more willing to spend money on this game for their kids. as one parent said to his kid, when he asked why he couldn't use the element gates with his core figure... the makers of the game is stupid.

also is these talking scene and movie scene not skip able at all this time around???... serious??... this is no better than rufus.

At this point I have the full version, so I'll add some comments:

  • I am not sure whether the old Bluetooth portal works, but it would be nice if people could load in figures to the demo level to try them out. This would probably increase the incentive to buy beyond the 'Instant' characters.
  • It is the nature of the beast that the demo can't use the controller, but I found that it works really well. That doesn't help if you are playing with two people, but the screen is kind of small to do that well anyway. You kind of want to sit close to the iPad to get a good view of the action.
  • It was probably necessary to do the demo, but without the portal and controller, you are missing a lot of the wow factor. I was playing on an iPad air, and the graphics were last-gen quality, which I think is pretty impressive in its own right. I do plan to play the full game on the tablet while traveling for work (though we'll have to see what 'landers I can actually pack), and am happy that I got it.

I was underwhelmed by it too, but remember it's essentially the same game as xbox 360.

NO WAY I would pay that price for the 3 digital packs. They need to be way less. It didn't even tell you what was hidden in them that I could see!

I may pick it up on clearance later on when it's being dumped cheap (it will be) but they missed a trick with making the pad useless outside of the one game. Oh and the portal doesn't work with the collection app apparently.

I will stick to enjoying it with my kids on the big screen. I kinda feel done with the whole franchise now to be honest. Once we complete this and get bored it will all be boxed up for evermore I guess.

the tablet version on my iPad4/Air is super impressive. there is only one reason they havne't gotten my money...

someone decided to package it with the SAME characters as the normal version, not variants, not later wave characters, the same characters, I already have a regular and a dark, so I have two snap shots and food fights...I'm not buying a third...

Tell me about it, right?

See, I remember CMB saying he wasn't going to buy into Skylanders and he was done with it, yet he downloads the demo and gives it a... bad review?

Didn't see that coming. Or did I? When I saw who made this topic, I knew right before I clicked on it, that he would give it a horrible review, because of his recent posts here on DS. That's why when I read his review, I knew not to put any trust in it, because it would be a biased filled review.

Agreed. He was even complaining about the digital-only 'Instant' variants of Snap Shot and Food Fight, and about how short the tutorial level is.

See, even as a fan I can find flaws in all 4 games, while also seeing the good in each game. If I reviewed each game, I would list pros and cons, not just cons and not just pros. The mini-review just seemed amateurish at best... and biased.

I remember that comment in the video and said "We shall see". I've no doubt they worked hard...maybe they didn't work smart. That being said I get the frustration/anger...maybe it's time for a "time out" and re-assess.

I wish they would consider maybe having two different start packs. I think it would been cool if they had like an A and B version. Like A would be the one we got now and B would been say gusto with an air trap and torch with a fire. (just examples). Would give ppl abit of a choice.
