In which case it's definitely a clique and we gossip all the time about you guys and there's nothing you can do about it.

I have a theory that the "S&N clique" exists simply because it feels more comfortable for people to put blame on one, unspecified group of users instead of blaming individuals for their troubles. In truth, each of them may actually posess very different ideas about what the clique is and who is in it, so it's more of a subjective term.
Thus, we get the illusion of many people having run-ins with the same group of people, while in reality they're just defending themselves from flak by not naming the users they had trouble with.

Fear of judgement may also play a part here. If you make it seem like you have valid reasons to think that something is big/imortant, it'll make it look less like you overreacted.
This is exactly what zer0dch did on Windumup's topic when he took Spyrobaro's joke seriously. When it appeared to him that she might've simply been joking, he immediately referred to that she could still get in trouble for saying things like that, as if to imply that others should've taken her post more seriously as well.
The people who blame "the S&N clique" for their troubles (they're not as numerous as they were a year ago though) might be trying to make a big deal about themselves facing some sort of resistance from the users of S&N, so that they could get more people on their side.

I was hoping to prove all of this with my survey, but only CAV took the time to answer.
