I'll keep this relatively short:
Does it make sense to collect the villain variant traps, as well as their normal counterparts?
For example, we have water log (standard) and water log (outlaw b&c).
Does it make sense to have both of these? My thoughts are because Brawl & Chain is only going to exist once in your game, you would end up with an extra trap once collecting the rest of the water traps, because he's either going to be in a regular trap, or the variant trap, but you can't have the same villain in more than one trap, and the outlaw b&c trap doesn't give you an additional b&c.
Hope this makes sense.

Whether it makes sense is kind of subjective.
For collectors or completists, it makes perfect sense. That is what I'm doing (buying a normal Water Logholder and Life Torch trap even though I have the Outlaw trap and Riot trap). In fact my son and I are saving the regular traps for regular Brawl and Chain and Shield Shredder when it's time to catch them. For people who are happy with just owning one trap of every element, it definitely sounds excessive and unnecessary which is understandable. No one is completely right or wrong either way, it's up to each person's interest.

I may have misunderstood your question, but if it helps, if you want to be able to own every single Villain in the game and be able to Evolve them, give them hats and nicknames, and have the toys remember their status... you don't need any more than 1 trap per element (including Kaos, Dark, and Light as elements here). You can even use a variant trap, like the Outlaw Brawl and Chain trap, to trap other Villains, and you'll still be able to get Outlaw Brawl and Chain back at any time by just switching to Brawl and Chain from the vault (when switching to him using that variant trap, it will always automatically transform him into Outlaw Brawl and Chain, and remember his evolved status, hat, nickname, and trinket as well).
As far as the game goes, the ONLY thing a second trap of the same element allows you to do, that you couldn't do with just one trap, is summon more than one villain of the same element in a single story mission. Other than that, and the convenience of not having to mess around with the villain vault between missions to swap your Villains around, extra traps serve no purpose. They don't even give you extra "stars" for Portal Master rank or anything (this game doesn't give stars for your collection size any more like the previous ones did). So unless you are a collector and just want to collect them all, or just really really want to be able to summon multiple Villains of the same element within a single mission, don't bother. |

i am fairly certain that you would be able to have brawl and chain on every water trap you own at the same time, if you so chose.
it should be possible to have him on both your outlaw water log trap and regular water log trap at the same time. i only have one of each element at the moment, so i cannot be 100% sure, but seeing how the villain vault works it seems to be a logical conclusion. someone with more than one of an element trap if you can either confirm or counter this please.

Yes I can confirm this. I have two water traps, one with Outlaw Brawl and Chain, the other with normal Brawl and Chain, right now as a test. Works fine. Can't get Outlaw version on the other trap though, the flag is tied to the particular trap toy he came with. Also for that matter, I can use the Outlaw trap for other water villains just fine, but when I switch it back to Brawl and Chain, he always shows up as Outlaw version for that trap (even though it claims he's the regular version in the Vault menu before I transfer him into the trap, once in that particular trap he transforms into the Outlaw version). In fact just to be sure, I also set each Trap to have a different Hat, that works too. So 2 Brawl and Chains available to me with different hats, one in each trap. The hat is also remembered even when I switch the trap to another villain than switch back to Brawl and Chain. Which Hat he wears is tied to the specific trap toy though, so if I put him away into the vault and then bring him into one of my traps again, the hat he shows up with is based on which trap I put him back into. |

RIP GhostRoaster. He's reanimated as TakeYourLemons but occasionally is resurrected from the beyond when needed. |
