Okay, so, a girl at my school recently got throat cancer. This is sad, however, she's coming to school while getting the radiation treatment. I don't know much about medicine, all really know comes from my mom who is a CNA. What I do know, is that radiation, kills your immune system..no matter how small the dose.

The doctors apparently told this girl that she "recovers fast from it and that it will only take 3 days." She's getting in small doses and Childrens Hospital.

I'd like to know what you guys think: Should her mother keep her home for a while, or keep sending her to school.

Personally, I think she should be home for a while. Mostly for her concern and the concern of the other people at school.

I agree that it could be best to keep her home for a few days. Schools aren't the cleanest places and it could be risky having her go there with a weak immune system.

I may be reading the post wrong...

Why not let her make her own choice. She already has cancer, and you want to throw your opinion on top of all the problems she has?

No, she isn't making her own choices. Her mom is making her go.

If that's the case, you can't do much about it. smilie

This is a bad time of year to have a weak immune system, especially if you go to a public place, like school, everyday. Personally I think she shouldn't go to school for a few days, but since we don't have a say in what happens, all we can really do is hope and pray that she'll be alright.

By the way, I read the title as onions instead of opinions, so I was so confused for a minute there lol

Pretty much this... Regardless of anyone's opinion, yours, the school's, or her mom's, the girl should do what she wants. While I have faith she'll get better, she should still do what she wants to be happy and make the most of it. If that means going to school and seeing her friends and classmates, then so be it.

I wish her lots of luck through this.

Personally I would say either home or the hospital. Preferably home though. Since she can get terribly sick quick at school, where most viruses, bugs, and diseases usually start at. And she should get better. Even though that would mean not seeing her friends and learning. But Cancer is a pretty bad illness. She really should be trying to get better instead of risking for worse.

Though I did say "or the hospital" mainly because the radiation can not only weaken her, but if given a strong dose, it can probably make her dangerous to those around. I have heard stories where people had a thyroid disease and they had to take radiation to kill off the thyroid cell, and they did became considered dangerous because of the radiation for a few days. And the doctors had to keep them isolated until the radiation medication wore off. Or maybe I'm wrong like I'm usually am.
