A thought about forum etiquette [CLOSED]

Guys,

Let me start by pointing out that it is my conscious intent to cross post this in each of three of the most popular forum threads. If you see this more than once, its because I think it's an important read for our users. Given the high-traffic time associated with any new release, this is an obvious a time as any to bring this up.

I've been following DarkSpyro.net for over a year now, and I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed by the culture of these forums. Responses to posts are often borderline hostile here... and while generally speaking I don't think anyone outright bashes one another, if someone dares post something that MIGHT have been alluded to in another thread you can guarantee that a bevy of unfriendly responses about how it had already been mentioned will follow suit - followed by the thread being promptly closed. Remember we have folks of all ages here and some are more and less experienced in forum etiquette.

Additionally, not everyone's ideas for threads will be stellar. If someone opens a thread about a vision they have for the Skylanders Universe that seems juvenile to you, stay open-minded and remember that its OUR passion and our dedication to Skylanders that keeps this franchise going. Exclude no one, and try to be just 1% more tolerant of posts that to you seem "annoying". Posting nothing to an unpopular thread will push it the bottom fairly quickly and give the poster the obvious unspoken feedback that the post was not a topic most of us was willing or interested in discussing.

Admins, you can do a better job of encouraging and discouraging the kind of behavior that makes people uncomfortable to post without combing through dozens of threads to ensure something they have to say is new information. And while there is no problem with gently redirecting folks, why not post in a friendly way, merging ideas and connecting threads rather than making people feel obligated to apologize. Not everyone is guity of this, and for those of you who work to maintain a friendly environment, thank you.

Now, folks. Lets go and enjoy Trap Team , the toys, and the world of Spyro together so that DarkSpryo continues to the #1 place folks come to discuss this awesome franchise and the Universe around its characters.

Sincerely,

Tempered

Well put. It seems anything that hasn't been proven 100% is met with hostility

Well put! I only just joined the forum and I've had to be a bit cautious because of rather uh... 'Toxic' members. So far, I'm just trying to keep to myself and help where I can.

Thanks guys. If nothing else, I am pleased to see some of us are willing to discuss this issue.

Case in point? Instead of making this a post a sticky, my second cross post has already been removed by admins. Its unfortunate.

Removed because it's off topic? Because we already have enough folks going around Junior Moderating? Because you triple-posted it across multiple forums in spite of the rules?

Your message was great, the delivery was all wrong. It's like a slick-talking Washington politician bestowing the grace of his mere presence on the lowly citizenry to tell them what they're doing wrong and how he can make everything better for them.

If you see a post that is "hostile", mark it. The more folks that mark a message, the more likely it is someone will do something about it.

Thank you UncleBob for proving my point. Your response is frustrating. Argueably, this is a topic appropriate for ALL areas. If the moderators don't moderate, then I will gladly "junior moderate" with my opinion as a user of these forums. And I will be marking your response. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll say something I don't do very often, I completely agree with UncleBob. If the forums are not to your liking, there are literally hundreds of other vanilla options out there. What makes this place interesting is the debates and news. If everyone held hands and sang kumbaya, a lot of people would lose interest.

As far as your whole "be nice to everyone regardless" point, apparently you haven't been here when we had scalpers taunting people over how much they had made off EBay. Or the people that just flat out make stuff up for attention (like Wicked Thumpback). Or the people that tell others that they have an "inside scoop" or their friend showed them some unreleased figure "in the back" and are lying for attention. Or the people that post just random crap. New/non-established users will get a measure of distrust if the post something that isn't confirmed or sounds suspect. Post accurate info consistently and you will earn trust. Or hit the road, if you think trust should be granted immediately.

Have you thought for a second, the level of debate here might be something the forum admins actually want? Maybe the reason things are done this way is because that exactly how they are intended to be. And breaking the rules to lecture us on how you think it should be run isn't really welcome. Take the deletions as a hint. If that results in losing the input/opinions/judgement of someone with incredibly thin skin, then I guess we will survive. There is absolutely no profanity used, very few personal insults, no adult level content or debate. In fact this whole place is pretty PG.

If it gets your knickers in a bunch, welcome to the Internet. Try to avoid other gaming sites like CAG, NeoGAF or Shoryuken. They would make you cry. You always have the alternative of creating your own place, gathering members and attention, building a base and getting the word out. But, if you do so I would recommend laying off the heavy handed moderation you propose, because it would be a ghost town. Heavy moderation almost always results in users finding somewhere else to go.

Oh, and where do you get off saying you are "marking" UncleBob's post like it is some kind of warning? Get over yourself.

I have to agree with Defpally. The internet isn't for the weak of heart. I never had my first cell phone til I was in college. Now I see kids under 10 running around with smartphones being exposed to content online which is much more unsavory than these friendly DarkSpyro forums. While all is logical and friendly of the intentions of the opening post of this thread, it's not realistic to be preaching that stuff and expecting people to listen...you'll just wind up being frustrated at the amount of non-adherence to your points. Teaching your own kids right from wrong, strength of character, having thick skin, how to handle conflict, and being respectful of others will get you farther.
