I HATE how Texas is one of the most stereotyped states in the US. You may think I'm paranoid, as most of it is just a joke to attract tourists, but when I talk to friends and family who have never been to Texas and they SINCERELY ask me stuff like "Do you have indoor plumbing?" "How much cattle do you have on your ranch?" and then proceed to laugh at me when I say I live in a city. The only places in Texas that are really close to that redneck cowboy stereotype are the panhandle and the west tip. I know, I know, it's usually a joke, but many people I know are NOT JOKING when they ask me if I have indoor plumbing. Long story short, it's my pet peeve. What are your thoughts?

People actually ask those kinds of questions?

The Texas stereotypes I often hear about are those ripped straight from King of the Hill.

I've only been to Texas once when I was really little, so I don't really remember it. It seems pretty nice, though.
And people think they're being funny and original, but they're just being stupid. Don't let it bother you too much.

I share your pain...... I kinda like it here, but at the same time I hate how stereotyped it can be to think we're all a bunch of redneck cowboys. I've never been on a ranch, have never touched livestock, only wore cowboy boots once in second grade as part of a school related thing, and live a block away from about 6 different fast food restaurants.

I kid you not, I have indeed been asked those questions. I once brought my friend down to Texas; when I showed them around downtown San Antonio, they were genuinely amazed that we are actually a civilized state. They were also amazed at how big our roaches are here smilie
