Is it me or do all the adult dragons seem mostly bipedal?
Spyro doesn't seem to be an oddity or different breed because all the baby dragons are quadrapeds too. So it can be assumed that young dragons start walking on their hind legs when they age. In the classic games Spyro can't be older than the dragon equivalent of 15, at minimum he's a normal 12 in YOTD.
I remember reading and hearing multiple times a major reason to why Insomniac stopped at 3 was because they didn't like how limited Spyro was, even with side characters like Agent 9 or Byrd. He couldn't hold weapons normally. If they aged him a little - he already seemed to age from 1 to 2 - then wouldn't that be possible?
Even besides that it's interesting to wonder if Spyro will stay a quadraped as an adult.

There was always this image:
Some people believe it's his father, but it looks like an adult Spyro with a medal to commemorate his bravery against Gnasty Gnorc. |

Insomniac did actually have an idea for a fourth Spyro game (it involved time travel elements) but Universal decided not to renew their contract and Insomniac went on to the Ratchet and Clank games instead.
I always kind of liked that little dragons are quadrupedal but grow up to be bipedal. :) |

In the classic universe he would have gone on to be bipedal when he grew up. I do feel like if they aged him, they make have been able to make him a bit more like Ratchet in regards to his ability to hold weapons. @.@

People have been saying that Insomniac actually wanted to make a fourth Spyro game. Unfortunately, Insomniac didn't have the right to choose how many games they wanted to make, since they never owned Spyro; at the time, Universal Interactive did. It was a very dumb move for them to stop having Insomniac make Spyro games, but Insomniac accepted that fate, since they were running out of ideas for Spyro. Others have tried to evolve Spyro throughout his time. Enter the Dragonfly was a first attempt at evolution. Unfortunately, all people noticed was the seizure-triggering frame drops, AKA, "crap." "No evolution! WTF!??!" A Hero's Tail made up for that, but barely evolved Spyro more. In fact, he didn't get a heavy upgrade until The Legend of Spyro, which kind of takes some mechanics from Spyro: Shadow Legacy for the DS. Crap, I still want a new game... |

Speaking of Bipedal there was a scene in ANB where Ignitus briefly stands on his hind legs whilst ranting on about the Malefor Statue and Dragonic History, he literally takes a raptor like stance.

I don't think he was standing on his hind legs, he was standing on all fours throughout ANB.

The LoS dragons are incapable of standing on their hind legs for any amount of time (and I don't think the males even can, given how short their back legs are). We see Cynder rear up before attacking once, but she quickly gets back on all fours.

^ I guess just view them as big dogs, big dogs with terrible anatomy.
But back to Classic Spyro and him going from quadrupedal to bipedual, his back legs would go from something like this, to this (because bears can stand on their back legs) so he'd go from digitigrade to plantigrade. It's probably only me who finds this pretty cool though. |

You're not the only who thinks it's cool. :)
