I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that the mods are trying to make this a better forum (yeah right).

seriously i see people talking about how bad it is but do they actually visit anything better? is their idea of a good forum something that actually exists because i dont know a single 'good' forum really please show me the light there's crap everywhere

why stay around what makes you so upset or mad or offended if there are better places then go there and treat yourself better

my actions are individual and most of the mods do their own thing
i guess now that i'm a mod in s&n i can't be acting on my own or something? idk

I'll speak for myself here and say that dS probably is the best forum I've ever been to, hence why I stick around. The layout is simple and clean, and there's many users here that I'm friends with and/or like to talk to. Any problems that I may have with the site usually come down to the management, and said management's questionable choice of mods. But at the same time it's not to where my enjoyment has died out just yet.

There was a forum I was on last year that had additional features, and potentially better management (barely), but.............I don't wanna talk about it.

The only other "forums" I go to are various subreddits on Reddit.

EEEEEEEEEEDIT: For the record, have you ever thought that maybe some people are still around exclusively to talk to their friends? Not everybody has Skype or AIM or Kik or whatnot, and this is their only way to talk to them.

I've been on Smashboards a lot for a while now, I think it's better than dS, but it was made a few years before this site was made, as well with the fact that Smash Bros is still a thriving franchise unlike the dead and buried Spyro series, it will be a bit ahead of the curb.

That's not saying anything bad about dS though, as CAV said, this site has a lot of good users and a simple interface. The only problem I can see is that some ideas posted in the Site Help and Suggestions board, even with large amounts of followers, aren't seen very often by the Admin, but if that's one of the only problems with your site. You're pretty well off.

Nintendo Life was pretty good and has mostly-great modding, and while it doesn't really have a section as active as SN, is probably more active than dS overall. I left a few months ago because everyone I knew became inactive; thinking about going back lately because I miss talking to people who're also into Nintendo, though.

Edit: Hell, know what? I'm going to go back on there right now. I miss it too much and along with Classic Game Room, it's one of the only forums where I really enjoyed discussing video games themselves.

yeah i understand this but the forum itself is actually pretty easy to ignore, isn't it? with the subscription feature people can also go straight to that to visit threads that they actually find good, and friends lists etc.. speaks for itself
i know that just "ignoring" it isn't really a solution to someones discontent, and that people who have friends here would probably want to interact with the forum and see their posts etc.. and also meet new people, of course
i wasn't really including these people in the idea of this thread but maybe they could get ideas on better forums to visit and interact with people with from here? if they can, of course
since i know that some parents are pretty iffy when it comes down to kids and the internet, and a spyro forum does seem innocent enough, and all

I'm thinking there might be something strange going on with the registration system as I've noticed multiple newly registered users making two accounts. If you don't mind explaining, could you tell me what happened when you tried to register? If something's not working, I definitely need to get it fixed.

Much less active. We only get about 40 to 50 unique users logging in per week. Since we never adapted to include Skylanders stuff on the forums (and the existing userbase has a pretty negative attitude about Skylanders in general), we're not getting any new users from that crowd. Also, before I took over as acting admin the site was pretty neglected and had lots of downtime and problems that probably drove a lot of people away.

Even if they opt to ignore many of the problems the site may have, they may still feel like they're worth fixing, and will voice displeasure. If a mod is acting dumb, someone is going to comment on it regardless of how active they are, even if it means saying something like "this is why the site sucks now". I don't think they should be excluded from expressing thoughts on the site, how it's run, or what the current event(s) is/are.

To be quite honest, and I know you don't mean it this way, it's sounding a little bit like you're saying that if they aren't satisfied with the site they should leave. That instead of you, the mods, and the admin putting the work in to improve the site greatly, it's easier to just tell users to call it quits and go somewhere else. I followed that advice last year and I greatly regret it for a multitude of reasons that I'm still stuck on.
Sure maybe a few users from S&N leaving won't impact the activity and revenue the site gets because of the booming Skylanders sections. But it seems iffy to be told "you don't like it? get out" when the admin is supposed to make me feel welcome and like things are improving.

NOTE: This shouldn't come down as something personal against you. I'm aware that mods here are limited in what they can do because the admin himself doesn't want to give you that much ability.

It happened a few years ago, but if I remember correctly, I had created an account, but then the site would freeze and not let me login or something. After several attempts, I gave up on it, then later I tried creating an account again, and the same thing happened.

Thanks. We completely overhauled everything and moved to a new system at the beginning of this year, so if your issue was a few years ago, it's most likely gone now. I can see if I can get you your account back if you want, or you can just make a new one. Or if you don't want to, that's fine, too, of course. smilie

As for this issue of "better forums"... I can't talk about any issues on this forum specifically because I really don't post here much, but I don't think it's fair to imply that if you can't think of any better forums than this one, you just should stop complaining. Some of the complaints might be valid concerns that should be addressed. Even if no better forums existed anywhere, and this one was the best forum on the entire internet, I'm sure there would still be things that could be improved about it.

At the same time, the people who are complaining should know that no one has to make the changes they want, and too much pushiness will probably only make things worse and cause drama. Members should ideally put their ideas forward calmly as suggestions without getting too upset when their suggestions are rejected.

It's understandable that a forum like this would be important to its community members, which is why "complaining" and suggestions for improvement are important. But people do have to realize that if the forum is doing more harm than good for their mood, it's okay to take a break. And getting into heated arguments over site features or moderator behavior or whatever the issue might be is not going to fix anything.

yeaah that's actually what I was trying to also say but I didn't express it clearly enough

I completely understand how someone could see me as just telling people to leave
I remember a long time ago where any displeasure about the site was usually responded with by "why are you here", or at least that's just what I noticed as a younger user
at the same time the quality of the site is often skewered by perspective but the actions of mods still shouldn't be making people feel like the site has gotten worse or is bad even if it still is perspective and eye of the beholder and all. its not a truth to live by because it encourages ignorance but it is also not a truth to be ignorant of
there's been examples of how mods making decisions purely independently have been bad and examples of how mods making a decision based on other input have been bad as well
but there is no denying that while there is not a lot of ability given to moderators, that sometimes we don't actually do enough or so forth and it makes everything feel kind of lopsided
being a good moderator isn't entirely "check reports"/"gnorc people"/"close threads" (at least thats what I like to think) and while I have made a comment in the past about people not reporting enough, it's still on us to be at least somewhat attentive and do things beyond just basic moderator actions but it seems most of us aren't confidant in that much due to that opening up more to criticism and so forth

okay that was mostly just me rambling but I hope you get what I mean

don't worry if you think i'll take it personally but please tell me if you think I am because I tend to sound upset when I really am not

Firstly, I would recommend you use capitalization and punctuation when making larger posts like these. It becomes harder to read.

Secondly, you're kinda right. Being a mod isn't based purely on checking reports and suspending users. But at the same time you've been offered so little power that even if you were all to listen to all criticism and use each other's input while being relatively independent in decision there's still big gaping holes in how this thing should be run.

At that point it comes down to the admin himself to become more active and interactive with the users, and listen to suggestions. Even if the suggestions involve hiring new mods entirely. People shouldn't be told to leave if they're unhappy because the admin refuses to interact and listen to them. If Skylanders never came around and that was the logic that was carried the whole time, this site would likely be dead.
