We never joked about alcoholism that I know of, the whole point of a bar is to have fun and drink, making fun of cancer is just one of the worst things ever.

Either everything is ok, or nothing is.
EDIT: Depending on context. |

There's a difference between goofing off in a fake online singles bar and mocking people with a horrible disease. I don't remember anybody making any jokes about alcoholism.

Who said they were acceptable? Are you honestly trying to justify joking about cancer?

I think some of the more creative "this post gave me cancer" jokes can be funny sometimes. |

I don't see how either of those jokes would be funny. Ever.

There are ways to make cruel things like this funny, dark humor is a thing that exists, but it's not easy to pull off. It's easier just to not say anything than make a dark joke.
And before anyone says that nobody should joke about cancer as it's a terrible disease, I know it's terrible. My grandmother died just last year from it, my uncle is suffering at the moment, alongside one of my aunts. I already know it's a horrible disease, but I still think people can joke about it, just as long as it's in good taste. |

It all depends on the context, everything does. These are subjective views and nothing more.
I've heard some rape jokes that I thought we're funny. I've heard cancer jokes that I liked. I've chucled at the thought of alcoholism and death. Are there people here who are really going to tell me that I've been wrong to do that? That I shouldn't have liked those jokes (and that's what they were, jokes). Are they going to tell me that I've been disrespectful towards other people and their suffering because of what I felt in my own brain? What position of power do their views deserve over my personal thoughts and ideas? None. None of them can tell me what I ought to think, none of them can tell me what I should find funny and what to take seriously. I make those judgements myself. And so do you. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that everybody should find jokes like this funny, what I'm saying is exactly the opposite. I am for individual thinking and the freedom of ideas. Nobody, not your religion, not the goverment of your homecountry, not your friends, not your family should be able to dictate what you can and can't think about. If a man can't have his own thoughts, what can he have? However, I also think that these ideas of ours should be valued by their basis on rational thought. So there's that. |
