I don't mean dumb like "wow, he was easy", or " wow, it's a QTE fest ". No, I mean really, really dumb design decisions.
Ever played Persona 3 on the PS2? Excellent game! ...Although, the final boss is absolute bull ****. It starts out easy. Then it switches forms. That's easy. Then it switches forms again. Ugh, okay. Then it switches forms again, but attacks are blocked or magic has no effect. Kill it. Oh, another form? Wonderful. Should be the last one..NOPE. Eventwyally the boss starts spamming insanely cheap moves that results in a near instant death state, or charms your party to heal the boss. But hey, this must be the last form, right? Nope.
Turns out the boss has FOURTEEN PHASES. Jesus Christ, that's dumb. Not to mention, the final form is the hardest form and has 4x health, spams ultimate moves constantly, and you have probably ran out of elixers.
The boss fight can literally take up to an hour or more. I luckily beat it in 45 minutes after my fourth try.
So...my middle finger goes out to you, Persona 3. I wasn't even under leveled. Its just cheap boss design...at least it had a good soundtrack.
...game is still excellent though!
Edit: Click to feel my rage.
Video should help display some of my rage. Boss has 14 forms. Hard enough as it is. Sweating tears of joy, almost dead. Boss pulls BS move.

I haven't played through this game for a while, so maybe I'm looking these parts with jade-tinted glasses, but I think the final boss of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just bad in an otherwise stunning game.
Don't like how Bowser suddenly turns big (don't like how it's unexplained at the start, either). The boss battle is fairly fun and has cool music, but ultimately it's not interesting. I mean, pretty much every other end-world boss is more fun and has a better concept. It just bugs me, how Bowser turning big feels like it came out of nowhere, and the battle feels too simple.

^ I agree 100%. I wish Nintendo would stop making me spam "being giant".
Anyway, aside from the above post, I have a couple. Kingdom Hearts II Don't get me wrong, I love a good, challenging boss fight, but when you get to the point of having 7 bosses in a row, it gets a little tedious, especially when two of them are very similar. It gets old. Kirby Triple Deluxe Not counting True Arena, the end of DeDeDe tour is insane, you fight Sectonia, then Shadow DeDeDe, and then Dark Meta Knight. Luckily if you die, you just go back to before THAT boss, but still, I have yet to do a full run for all three of them consecutively. Shadow the Hedgehog Though it's not the final boss of the game, the max evil version of Sonic and Diablon is stupid. It took me days just to beat it the first time, let alone for an A... Anyway let me explain. You fight Sonic and this flying robot thing, he has this massive super powerful attack, but gives you like a 20 second warning before you uses it. The issue is, he's shielded and Sonic can't die, you have to time your attacks perfectly to hit him (while he's attacking) and it's pretty difficult to hit him without getting hit as well. You'll never hit him for any decent damage because the area has NO WEAPONS. So eventually they'll just wear you down until you die. Stupid. Now if we're on the topic of lame bosses... Super Paper Mario While Dimentio might be a great character, the final fight against him is pathetic, once I gave up trying to use Bowser against him, I beat him within a minute without taking any noticeable damage. The attacks are pathetic at best, and he has such a large weak point that it's almost impossible NOT to hit him. Drawn to life 2 After Wilfre defeats you, and has an epic speech about how he is going to liberate the world from the creator (essentially the player) the good guys do some long boring prayer-ish thing, bring your hero back to full, and destroy his Sceptre, so Wilfre unleashes his "ultimate creation" which is a ****ing cloud with a chair on it. No joke. If you have the gun, the battle is over in seconds. Great music though. Shadow the hedgehog (again) Egg Breaker (Metal Jungle version) I love and hate this boss at the same time, I hate him because he's so lame, but I love him because I can beat him in 7.6 SECONDS. It's easy, when the battle starts, turn around and jump into the turret behind you, fire like mad. You can't hold the button or it'll give you a bad RoF, so you have to mash it, like REALLY mash it. But that's it, that's all you have to do.

For incredibly annoying/difficult final bosses:
Velo in the console version of Crash Nitro Kart was always a HUUUGE pain in the arse for me. He clears every single obstacle in that track perfectly. He never makes a mistake, whereas, if you get hit by ONE of his attacks, you'll almost definitely finish the race in 2nd. Mike Tyson in Punch Out.. Don't even get me started. For horribly easy/badly designed final bosses: Sardius from Super Ghouls N' Goblins, while being semi annoying, was pretty badly designed. You can only fight him if you have the Goddess Bracelet (second most powerful weapon, horrific range). I've used the level select to get to him with a Knife, and he was an absolute pushover.

Majora all forms.
Okay let me explain why this boss annoys me. Okay so it is fine if you don't use the fierce deity but if you are like me who used it when you first got the mask it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.Like literally with the fierce deity it takes 5-10 mins to beat Majora and really I was disappointed. But I beat the boss again without it but I still had that feeling of annoyance.

Ballos in Cave Story.
as much as I adore Cave Story, the last area is already hell itself (literally, the first sign you read says "welcome to hell!"), but to have to go through that difficulty spike and fight the true last boss, Ballos, in FOUR BOSS PHASES, while barely having time to breathe because he does so much damage and smaller enemies are literally covering half the screen, is bullcrap. Takes away from what was definitely a perfect game imo.

^ Hahahaha! Yes.
Mathias from Tomb Raider 2013. That was super disappointing. He's sort of built up as this menacing guy the whole game but, in the end, you don't even fight him. You fight one Oni (and it sucks because you have literally not been prepared for this fight at all) and then you off Mathias in a QTE where you just shoot him in the face and kick him off a cliff. Sooooo lame. If Himiko had at least killed him or you got to fight her a little bit, that might have made up for it, but that didn't happen either. The game is great and the story conclusion is really nice, but "fighting" Mathias and the last of the Solarii was really not satisfying at all. |

re: Mathias
I forgot to mention that he has at least one very obvious point where he could just kill Lara and totally doesn't do it for no reason at all. He started out so promising, but as soon as he picked up that weird buzz saw staff and put the robes on, he turned into a Saturday morning cartoon cult leader. Given just how menacing and scary the rest of the island is, this guy really should have been more. Alas! |

Digimon World Data Squad (PS2)
Lucemon. I mean yeah I understand that in the digimon world series, there's usually a final boss fight involving the boss to be in a different form. But in Digimon World Data Squad, they don't really brace or give you a lot of time to prepare you for the fight. In fact when I faced Lucemon and he changed his form. I was livid. I hate how god modded they made him (seem). Hell I sold my copy, because of how bad the game was in general. Don't buy it. Get Digimon world DS. It's a lot better. Okami I think the only boss I can complain about is Yami, I mean he's not repeated through out the game like Orochi or the Spider queen (If you count the Spider Pirate side boss, which has the same mechanics to the Spider queen fight). But he has to be the longest one out of the bunch. And in order to get to him, you'd have to repeat all of the main boss fights, which is 4 boss fights (could be missing some) followed by a repeat fight of Orochi and the Spider Queen. But if you like those fights (and believe I actually do like the fights), then I guess it's excusable. But his boss fight alone is long. But you know at Okami did a better job of leading you to the fight and giving you feels about than Digimon World Data Squad and LoS:DotD Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon Yeah..If you know me well, you'd already guess that Malefor would be on this list. In fact this third of the trilogy, is probably the most rushed thing I have ever seen (next to a few other games). I mean:
I could vent on and on about this game and it's story plots. But I'll save my thoughts for later, I need to talk about the fight. Oh and the game got low sellings in general. Making this game "rare". The fight between you and Malefor is pretty easy, though it can be hard if you don't get it. But it mainly has the whole action scenes in it. I think I rather beat the snot out the enemy like in the first 2 LoS games than do that all of the time. In fact this is why I think the series should have had a game that explains things, that was not after Dawn of the Dragon. But before it. Shadow the Hedgehog Tis confusing on the boss fights. But let me tell you something, Eggman is the most annoying thing in the game. Next to the plots holes and the stories. I mean can't you add more than 1 line dialogue on your boss character for in the boss fight so you don't get annoyed badly? The game also left more Questions than Answers like in the previous I talked about. But it has a somewhat of a build up instead rush and rush stuff. But it did have a dark tone to it, like extinction of the human race, the creation process and such. But that does excuse the 1 line dialogue that they gave to all of the characters.

Skylanders: Swap Force
After a huge pile of petrified darkness crystals fall all over Kaos, he becomes a giant purple crystal monster and continues to monolouge how evil he is. You start the fight attacking his crystal covered toenails... WHY?! While he tries to stomp on you (and when you attack the crystals) he makes puns about his toes... WHY?!!! He eats you and you have to destroy the crystals inside his teeth, which he also makes puns about. You have to fight golems and some chompies while you destroy his teeth. After that, you end up in his brain and you have to destroy the crystals on his brain; here you have to fight GIANT enemies and dodge a firing ship as well as bombs from the Mesmerelda boss fight, and he still goes on, and on, and on, and on about his brain and "brilliant" ideas. The Kaos sheep were pretty funny though. Then he sneezes you out and now you have to get to a cannon that appeared out of nowhere while he fires a large powerful laser from both his hands, and he never SHUTS UP! Then once you get into the cannon, you fire yourself right on his forehead, ending this idiotic final boss. Oh, and the music is either remixed or reused soundtracks from the first game... Heck, the 3DS version of Swap Force had a much better Final Boss than this! |

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune's final boss is just kind of lame, actually. All you have to do is get close to Navarro by shotgunning his creates, and then you just press those onscreen buttons. Don't get me wrong, it's still an enjoyment, but still...
Oh, and in case you need a face: EDIT: Quote: Trix Master 100
Exactly why there's a whole lot of fanfics now. Spyro: Shadow Legacy You just wait for the big purple Sorcerer dragon to attack, and then you cast a counterspell, which just knocks him out for 20 seconds so you can go up to him press the same button OVER AND OVER AGAIN?!?!? And for THREE TIMES?!?!!?!?!? Yeah, for a Spyro game that put the rare purple dragons concept early on, the Sorcerer falls shorter than Malefor. Yep, Malefor's the better villain. Endless Ocean: Blue World
I wouldn't exactly call this a "Final Boss" but the Cavern of the Gods escape was horrible. You have to go one way then find out that that way is blocked by strong currents. Then on the other side it talks about a hidden key. IT'S RIGHT NEXT TO YOU! Once you get out you get a cutscene about L&L Diving Services dead ambassador Matthias Louvier and how he has been watching over us, as the SEA. And then when it's all over, it costs 1000000 pelagos to reopen the place. CAN'T YOU JUST USE THE GOD DAMN DYNAMITE YOU USED TO GET IN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?! Besides this it was an amazing game. Very relaxing. Great for casual gamers like me. 100/10 would play twenty times over. Which I have.

I'd also like to say that, in Crash 2, Naughty Dog made an annoying move. Yes, it's rewarding to defeat Cortex in that final jetpack level, but it's just plain dumb to have to keep up with him when you're dealing with a bunch of blind corners and you have no idea where the frick the mines are. The mines don't kill you, but if you're not careful, that last level can be very annoying.

Bravely Default
I mean the final boss was one of the funnest for a turn-based game I've ever played, but the pre-final boss has an attack that removed all your buffs, all positive statuses (such as the vital Enigma), makes you weak to all elements, and then follows up with an attack that's name alone aught to give you an idea of how insane it is (you know how there's Megaflare, and then Gigaflare? This boss has a bleepin' ZETAFLARE, and uses it after debuffing you to be quite weak to it). The final boss is cinematically awesome and the music is stunning and the events give you such a sense of power, but due to that lack of a dangerous debuffing move, is ultimately easier. Also given how incredibly powerful he is he really ought to have just nuked the party, but of course in classic evil style he wants to toy with you and eat you.

Hmm, can't beilieve no one brought up the Elizabeth and Margaret boss battles in Persona 3/4, they are stupidly difficult. Elizabeth in Persona 3 battles in a set pattern, and you pretty much have to play her way(like no Armageddon), otherwise she heals herself then instantly kills you(she also gets multiple moves per turn) so you have to carefully whittle down her health (and keeping yourself alive) til she's at a point where you can kill her with a high damaging spell (like Armageddon) and finish her. So yeah, keep a notebook handy and how much health you're whittling off, otherwise if she passes a certain threshold, she'll heal herself fully. In return for winning, you get an item that pretty much makes you impervious to everything.
Then Margaret in Persona 4 is even worse (and she's EVEN WORSE IN GOLDEN), she acts similiarly to her sister Elizabeth in the fact you have to play by her rules, which is to beat her in a certain amount of turns, otherwise she heals fully then kills you instantly (however you can get away with her doing this by equippng Nanako's paper bracelet/having a Persona with an ability that can revive you after death once, then she'll reset). Wondering why it's worse in Golden, they changed the amount of turns you have to beat her from 50 to 25, so yeah, have fun! |

Trix Master beat me to Okami's final boss, but I'm gonna put my two cents in anyway.
Yami was incredibly anticlimactic. After seeing bosses such as: Orochi, Blight, Ninetails, and my personal favorite, Lechku and Nechku, I was expecting an utterly terrifying force of darkness ready to tear Amaterasu apart and scatter her furry remains into the cosmos, and at first I could definitely see that... Like, ****, son. Your ass is grass, Ammy. Lo and behold, this giant ball of death and despair opens up to reveal... ... this. A tiny, shrivled-ass fish. Now don't get me wrong, Okami is based entirely upon Japanese culture and history (namely the Shinto religion), and while I've read up on the legend of the real Amaterasu, I know nothing about that of Yami. So who's to say he isn't really a teeny fish in a giant ball of death? |
