The last time I've watched Spongebob was right around after the movie came out. Season 1-3 were really, really good. It was an entertaining kids show that even the parents could watch. It had some adult humor thrown in there as well (not on the levels of Ren & Stimpy), and a likable cast.

But wow.

Holy crap has it turned awful. Spongebob is an awful character with little to no emotion, Patrick is a prick, and Squidward is now used as a tool to get hurt. You can't even feel bad for Squidward anymore, he's become an unlikable person too. Not to mention, the newer episodes have so much filler and horrible plot lines...

What am I doing? Why am I doing this. I don't even know. D:
What was once a beloved kids and adult show is now crap. That's what I get for trying to watch one of the newer episodes for nostalgic purposes.

Yeah... That's what I meant. Seasons 1-3 were great. Seasons 4 and onward was garbage (except for a few gems here and there)

I'm glad we could agree on that. I have some good memories of 1-3 haha. Then my parents divorced. Damn lol.

Season3 was eh.

Spongebob's early seasons were prime examples of how to write for kids. It was witty, clever and all in all funny... THEEEEN stuff like The Splinter, One Coarse Meal, Atlantis Squarepantis, etc. came around and reared it's ugly head.

i hope they end it after the second movie but i doubt it. even if it got great again somehow, the damage caused by the super bad ones has already been done

I'm just an animation enthusiast. I want to be an animator when I grow up so I look at bad cartoons and see why they are so crappy.

They have abused the franchise for too long, there's simply nothing left for them to do. That's what I've noticed.

I didn't care for the first season, but season 5 had some good episodes too.

To this day, I still say "without any milk". Just goes to show how good the show used to be.

A show can only go on so long until they run out of ideas and lose the charm/staff that made it great.

Also they really need to move on from Spongebob, it has become worn and needs to end so another kid show can take it's place.

Frankendoodle and Survival of the Idiots were two of my favorite Spongebob episodes.

"Where's the leak ma'am?", "FINLAND!" and "Hot wings."

That is all. xD

I've seen a lot of post-movie episodes (not recently however. I'm not sure how bad the really recent episodes are) and I didn't think they're that bad, with some exceptions (the splinter one comes to mind). Definitely don't have the same charm as the older episodes, though that could be said with a lot of shows that have been running for years (the Simpsons comes to mind of course, but the recent episodes I've seen of that I actually enjoyed, not as much as the older ones I've seen but still enjoyable... Sue me).

Three of my favorite Spongebob episodes were Chocolate with Nuts, Survival of the Idiots, and the one with the hash-slinging slasher. I also really liked most of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes

There were other good post movie episodes, I'm just not remembering them.

I can't remember the name of the episode, but there was that one where Patrick sticks himself into a mailbox, falls over, and blows up.

other than that and Krusty towers, the only new episodes I can remember easily (and good ones, not like that godforsaken splinter episode) are truth or square and bubble buddy returns.

if you only said the title of a classic episode I could easily remember it. But 95% of the newer episodes are not memorable at all.

This is not new news. This is such old news that the show could very well be getting better without us even noticing.
Also Season 4 is still pretty good imo, and it wasn't until 5 where it began to fall apart.

Mr. Krabs is by far the most unlikable character in the show, while Squidward remains the most sympathetic (of course you're gonna be a douche when you're surrounded by people who annoy you). It went from being a parody of the greedy character to one of the most obnoxious examples of the character the medium has yet seen, while still trying to present him as one of the good guys.

The movie next year is something I'm actually looking forward to. Feature films are something where you need to put a lot more effort into the product than a TV episode (see: the last movie). And it could very well be seen as a turning point for the better, like how the first movie became a turning point for a decline in quality. It's also worth noting that original creator Stephen Hillenburg is supposedly the lead writer for the film (though not directing).

I dunno. I feel like once you've made the monumental letdown that is Truth or Square, there's little way to go but up.

EDIT: I just found out that today (July 17th) marks the 15th anniversary in which Spongebob premiered as an actual series (though the pilot episode debuted May 1st).
