Why did it crash and die if it was a "greatest gaming franchine"

@DummyZ -

They made the 3DS version of Spyro's Adventure, yes. They also made the Wii U version of Giants and all console versions of Swap Force except Wii.

...
The more you know, I guess.

But if that was all they did relating to Skylanders, they couldn't have possibly stopped the Guitar Hero franchise just because of it.

Hell, Guitar Hero died before Skylanders even was announced.

They started working on Skylanders two years before they announced it.

Oh, man, I remember back when I first joined this site, I worshiped Guitar Hero - it was the absolute greatest. Coincidentally, my dad and I were talking just the other day about how quickly its fame fizzled out. I miss those days. smilie

Man, I probably couldn't play it worth a crap now, lol. It's been years since I last picked up the controller.

Rock Band.

Honestly, Rock Band ran out of songs WAAAAAAY faster than Guitar Hero did. Guitar Hero 6 had a relatively good setlist with lots of neat songs that introduced me to new music, and Rock Band 3's setlist had very little thought put into it, containing mostly stock music that's overstayed its welcome plus a handful of obscure songs that were mostly garbage. Plus, Rock Band 3 had an overdose of light and quiet songs, as well as dark songs, with not enough real rock songs. I don't want to strum to a plastic controller to The Looks, I wanna kick out the jams, dude! Where's the heavy songs!?

...Even the gameplay took a hit in Rock Band 3. Guitar Hero's gameplay stayed mostly consintant, which... truth be told isn't as good as Rock Band's, but IMO, that RB3 setlist was unforgivable. Even DLC doesn't make up for it for me.

I know it's a bump, but I was just playing Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades, and I cannot help but wonder if the console games would have been better if made by Vicarious Visions, because honestly... It's a good game.

I know, boo, but bear with me. It's all in the note charts. Yeah, you get only four buttons as opposed to five, but I noticed that the note charts are overall better designed than they are in the main series. Sure, it has a lot of jackhammer songs (Ugh, Pretender), but the note charts for the most part actually fit. They're more straight and rely less on artificial difficulty than in the main series. There's still a bit, but not as much as in the console games. The notecharts are ALMOST comparable to Harmonix notecharts. ...But not THAT good.

VV seem to be generally really good at game design, though I wonder how they would have made six buttons work for 7.

Funny that this was bumped up, since I was going to make a topic about it. I saw some gameplay of the series, and it appeals to me a lot. What game do you guys think I should get first and what accessories should I get? Do I need any for 100% or something?

For those of you wondering why GH died: too many games. I didn't pay attention to it while it was happening; but including Band Hero and the arcade game, they released 7 games in 2009 alone, and that's insane.

I can still only play this game (and Rsmilie on medium; sometimes hard.

I don't rock.

Also while I haven't played a lot of Rock Band 3, I like the idea of slower, lighter songs. There's only so much standard arena rock you can play before it all begins to drone on.

Overexposure in the market from music games, namely Guitar Hero and Rock Band, led people to get sick of the genre and not buy the games anymore. Activision insisted on pumping out several installments per year and sales dwindled each time until they pulled the plug and called it quits. Rock Band 3 had more staying power and the devs insisted on continuing with DLC, but Activision just dropped everything at once and canceled future titles in development too (including Drum Hero and Guitar Villain, among others). The music game genre is now mostly dead, with the only notable titles kicking around being Rocksmith and Project Diva.

They weren't running out of songs. The Wii U didn't do anything. And Skylanders is merely the current cash cow in Activision that is likely to suffer the same fate as Guitar Hero in a few years. Same thing happened to Tony Hawk and the extreme sports genre before it (TH, Skate, SSX, etc).

Yep. Sounds like innovation and overexposure did it in...seems to be a theme possibly going on right now with Skylanders.

Yeah, as far as running out of songs goes, Guitar Hero: World Tour was NOT running out of songs.
Guitar Hero 5 was Not running out of songs.
Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock was NOT running out of songs.
Rock Band 3 was running out of songs.

But honestly, I'm surprised the FPS genre hasn't died yet, because THAT is a genre I'd REALLY like to see die.

Edit: Did I say Pretender was bad in Guitar Hero On Tour Decades? Tarantula is MUCH worse! Playing that song in both lead and bass/rhythm is pure torture.
