Ok I finally got to play Mario Kart 8 at a friend's house...andI loved it. My favorite tracks are Mount Wario, Mario Kart Stadium, that one on the Airship that has the clouds and stuff and Electrodome.

I actually want this game. I saw a few videos, and I WANT this game!!!!

My only complaint with this game is the internet because I have literally only been able to do three races out of the number of times I've tried to do it. I keep getting a communication error and it is very frustrating. Aphas anyone else have this problem? And does anyone know how to solve it

I've gotten it occasionally. I'm usually able to play a large number of races first though.

The online has been completely stable for me since I got an Ethernet Passthrough Adapter. Do be aware that in general, the Wii U has problems functioning wirelessly for some routers. So that could be it.

If you're Wii U works fine in general, MK8 should too. However, there is a known issue whereby if one player leaves a lobby without voting on a course first, the entire lobby will usually get disconnected.

Favorite new tracks? Hmm...

Electrodrome: Took everything I loved about Music Park in the last game and NEONIFIED it. It really is a lot of fun and I think it made good use of anti-gravity. I want to know what Bowser gave his Piranha Plants to turn them into living glowsticks. <.<;

Mario Circuit: I think the mobius strip turned race track is pretty need. It's also got some great, long, spiral turns that are excellent for good item placement. ...Assuming you get an item. ****ing coins.

Shy Guy Falls: I think it's got a good combination of neat set pieces, like driving up the waterfall, and difficult areas where you need good maneuvering, especially at the end section after the waterfall.

Sunshine Airport: Like it's big brother, Coconut Mall, I just like the aesthetics as well as some of the small shortcuts you can take by using items and good driving.

My least favorite new track is EASILY Bone Dry Dunes. I think the hazard placement in that level is sinister. And when you race against the AI, they know when to knock you into red sand or off the track and always seem to jump ahead of you right after the gliding section.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Bone Dry Dunes, even though my main setup is actually really good for the track. I love the aesthetics and music though.

I have actually found myself really liking MK8's Rainbow Road in this game. It may not be difficult, but the fact they have a criss-crossing section at variable heights makes for one of the most interesting track segments in any MK game, since you have a lot of options and anything can happen if you master that section.

Other than that, I love Electrodrome, Sunshine Airport, Cloudtop Cruise (obligated to like this because of the Galaxy influence), Bowser's Castle (not as interesting as the one in DS but I love the aesthetics and music, and it's one of the most balanced and intense tracks when it comes to raw driving skills), N64 Rainbow Road, Donut Plains 3, Moo Moo Meadows...I honestly just think this game has the best track selection of any Mario Kart game.

I agree with you on Rainbow Road. I don't understand the hate. I do think it's difficult, but for a different reason. It is HECTIC when you've got 12 racers and items on frantic mode. The constant wide turns present everywhere except the starting line and the space station can present some devilish opportunities to screw people over with items.

Rainbow Road is actually pretty easy once you learn the secret. And everyone seems to dislike bone dry dunes. I do.

Rainbow Road is probably one of the best stages where I can front-run really well, so it always makes for a fast-paced race.

To be honest, there is not a single track that I actively dislike, I enjoy all of them, just some more than others.

Bone Dry Ruins is pretty annoying, not necessarily bad in my opinion, just really frustrating, especially the end part. My personal least favourite is probably Dolphin Shoals. Just a really bland, uninspired, and boring track in my opinion. The only nearly interesting set piece it the giant eel and that's not nearly as cool as most of the other things in other new tracks. Also, though this might be a little bit of a nitpick, but the music of that stage is really awesome and jazzy, but you only get to hear it for about a fifth of the track which is a massive shame. I do however like the final part of the track/the above water part, and I don't actively dislike this stage or any of the others, like sonicbrawler, though Dolphin Shoals is my least favourite.

I guess I'm the only one who's actually good at bone-dry dunes. When playing online I can usually get top three in it. I was racing some high-ranking guys for awhile and wasn't really doing too well (4,5,6) but when bone-dry dunes came up I easily got ahead and stayed ahead even after lightning and various shells.

The other desert though? Ugh, hate it, that and donut plains 3. Just horrible.

I'm good at the course. My combo (Rosalina, Standard Quad/ATV, Crimson Slim, Standard Glider) is perfect for it (it's proved to be a really useful combo for pretty much every course - it's only sub-par stat is acceleration, partly due to the fact acceleration is tiered in this game, like in MK7). I just don't find it particularly exciting. Unlike most other courses, this course doesn't really have any stand out and unique features.

While you could say the same for Donut Plains 3, I like that for being a really raw course with awesome turns, and a really awesome shortcut in the middle that you don't need mushrooms for.

Yeah. that happens to me sometimes with different courses like Mario Kart Stadium and Rainbow Road.

I'd say around 1500. I played online for an entire day once, then got booted from a group and placed in a really OP one. Haven't played since.

So, has anyone experienced the major online glitch where the game registers you as finishing in the wrong place yet? I was futzing around on MKTV today, and saw someone uploaded a highlight that showed them clearly finishing in 2nd place, but the game declared that he finished 1st. And no, the player in front of him wasn't a lap behind, because the character was doing the 2nd place victory animation. I wonder if Nintendo's going to patch that. <.<;

Yeah. My brother came ahead of this one guy, then at the results it said he finished behind him.

What do you mean? Just join regional or worldwide.

So I just had a nifty 90-minute online session. Without going on a rant, I can definitely conclude that Green Shells got a major buff for this game and Red Shells got nerfed to the point where they behave like their erratic N64/Double Dash counterpart unless you can see your target on screen. I mean, you guys are welcome to think differently, cause this is just based on my experiences so far. Which is probably why I'm still playing as Metal Mario. <.>;

Yeah, green shells seem to get perfect ricochets every time. Although they can only bounce like 4 or 5 times now, rather than 10.
Red shells usually only hit competitors close, or near the middle of the track.
From what I've seen, myself.

Yeah, with reds all I have to do is take a corner tight, then no more problem.

The item balance is really shaky in this game, one minute it's doing anything to prevent you from winning, another and it's basically handing you a victory.

My biggest problem with the Green Shells is their size. Compared to MK7 and ESPECIALLY MKWii, they are much bigger than they used to be. So although the heavy characters have fast speed, they all have the largest hit boxes in the game due to their vehicle size (except Metal Mario & Pink Gold Peach). So it's very easy to get pegged by a Green Shell if you're playing heavy. And since they have the worst acceleration in the game, if you get hit by a shell, you're not rebounding very quickly. @.@

It doesn't help that the acceleration stat in MK8 is tiered like in MK7 (for those who don't know what I mean - in MK7 and MK8, your acceleration stat ONLY changes when you add or take a full bar. So let's say you have 3.5 bars for your acceleration stat - the game will still treat that as just 3).

That's why I play as Rosalina, beyond her being my favourite character, she's within the best weight class, the Cruiserweights (just above Average Weight class). The other Cruiserweights are Donkey Kong, Waluigi, and Roy. You can get near max speed stat out of them, and still have your other stats be well balanced.

While this combo isn't very balanced, it's been serving me well, I've been winning races more consistently than my old combo (well, the old one used to do fine...I guess it started getting a lot of bad luck):

Well after a fantastic start from 4th in N64 Royal Raceway this evening, I proceed to get 6 COINS IN A ROW over the course of the first 2 laps. Cue Blue Shell, banana, green shell, and then a red shell a bit further down. To make it worse? I got a 7th coin when I hit the item box in 6th place! Also, I'm convinced the game's "Balance" actually favors the middle places unless someone has crossed the finish line. I've been in 10th-12th multiple times after being subject to humiliation congas and I have yet to get anything other than Triple Mushrooms. But if I'm 3rd-8th, I get Crazy 8s, Triple Red Shells, Golden Mushrooms, Starmen, and even Bullet Bills! I mean, I'm still having fun and totally addicted, but I can't help but facepalm at it. With that said, getting basic courses like Mario Kart Stadium and Mario Circuit online is NO GOOD because those courses devolve into slugfests. @.@

Oh, and if anyone wants to race (and probably beat) me tomorrow, I think I'll be partaking in GameXplain's tourney for SCIENCE. ^.^;
