I once came up with an Angry Random Thoughts topic. The Hunter with the crazy cat-like profile pic shut it down since I was spamming it with profanity.

Dude, THAT WAS THE FREAKING POINT OF THE TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!

Unless I dreamed it, isn't it against the rules to post a huge amount of profanity? Some is fine, but a lot is just.....

Well, I started getting angry when Skylanders: Trap Team was announced.

@LocoGuy107

See what you mean about Trap Team. And please don't get me started on how Skylanders exploited Spyro... smilie

Anyway, with this whole "After Midnight section" thing, I just can't see it working. I can see some of the younger users going on it anyway, just to prove a point. Plus, it just isn't very "Friendly" (if you know what I mean!)

Could we program an age restriction?

Eh, well you could be severe with banning if things go awry. Better than having these topics unannounced, where everyone can find them anyway.

i don't think it would need to be age restricted, just have a warning/list of rules for that section in the thing

Isn't S&N already for that? Everyone says inappropriate stuff in there and gets away with it,sounds like your usual 18+ board to me. Sure, a 'this board is for adults only, please keep in mind you'll find NSFW stuff in it' warning would be a good idea, but a place for users to say everything they want seems to be exactly what the threads in there are.

We have Stuff and Nonsense for goofy stuff, and After Midnight for the leftover religious/political/genderly topics. Just warn sensitive people to stay out if they are easily offended or upset.
Example:
Any serious, possibly controversal topics are to be put in here (i.e. religion, sexuality, wars). Please do not enter if you have a weak stomach or when you are quickly offended/saddened.
Warning: this will be highly moderated!!! You may have your opinion, but do not overstep boundaries to hurt another member.

Oh,that makes sense. But After Midnight sounds more like the goofy board(night blogging is associated with that after all), I'd suggest a more serious name, though I can't think of any off the top of my head.

A website where most of the users are under the age of 10? There needs to be a better place (Other then idle chatter and S&N) where adults (or anyone who wants to discuss said topics) to go and not have to worry that someone who really shouldn't be is reading the topic. Like a young child who doesn't know about puberty or just wants to stay innocent. Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of controversial topics made that do get seen by people who don't actually want to see them. Honestly, I think it's a good idea, especially if there is an age lock. (I get that you can change your age, but that's completely the usere's choice to.) Then again, that's just my opinion. >.>

That was my point. That A website where most of the users are under the age of 10 doesn't need Some thing like an After midnight section. Im sure the older users can find someplace else to discuss mature/rude/inappropriate stuff, right? smilie

That's all well and good in theory, but what happens when some 10 year old kid from the Skylanders section comes along thinking they're just as mature as these 'dumb teenagers' and suddenly finds out how the birds and the bees work?

An 'I am over 18' tickbox isn't really going to be enough on a site with this many kids on it.

Not gonna happen. Considering that us older users are the minority on the site, there's not that much use for having a section made specifically for us to discuss controversial or slightly inappropriate subjects. Not only that, but such a section will automatically have a bad stigma attached to it ("after midnight" has certain connotations), and things would just be better off not dealing with any of the trouble that could come with it.

One mod says it's appropriate because this is the internet and it's not their job to see if children run into that stuff, so it's totally fine. Not my opinion, but it's apparently totally fine.

I did, as a matter of fact, but then I realized that that was a very ignorant assumption. From a utilitarian perspective, the number of topics would be around the same. If you have a bag of red tokens and blue tokens, and someone asks you to put any number of each into receptacles, having a single jar or two jars does not change your choice. People will make the topics they want. If anything, the suggestion of heavy moderation of After Midnight would make topics more tame. Besides, some people have issues that they may want to discuss here. Sure, it's a Spyro forum, but we share a common interest, and can trace our other interests to extended origins. Who better to talk to than someone who can relate to a certain aspect of your personality?
Any other questions?

Edit:

By your logic, we should keep toxic chemicals with harmless substances. "
Why bother putting bleach in a cupboard? Even if you warn your child to stay away, they might find it. Just put it next to the milk."
Flawless logic.

Yeah, that was a bit uncalled for, no need to use a wall of text for that, Phantom. It's more because kids in the internet feel the need to get their cool guy internet points by acting like an "adult" (as in being as immature as possible), so no amount of warnings will actually keep them away. And, as I said, it's not like S & N is getting any rule enforcement anytime soon since they're free to be as inappropriate as they please, no one can guarantee the same wouldn't happen to an After Midnight section.

And heavily moderating that section wouldn't really happen, because I only see two or three mods even enforcing rules that aren't "Don't Advertise" or "Don't post links to illegal/pornographic material" to begin with. If we can't have them doing a job loads of forums mods can, we can't give them more tasks that they'll probably not do as well.

The entire point of an After Midnight forum on forums directed towards a "younger" fanbase is just that, to give the "older" members a place to discuss things--if this was a place for "older" fans, then there wouldn't really be a point for an After Midnight forum, no? I'm neutral towards it existing or not, overall. I think it'd be bothersome to enforce some strict age rule or something, instead it would be better if we had something relating to behaviour, because as stated, people can fake their age--and to generalize everyone in an age group is a mistake, especially on the internet.

Though, I agree that S&N is essentially the "after midnight" section of the forum, but it has less serious discussion and more silliness there too, but many serious discussions there can have more value due to it being more popular than poor ol' Idle Chatter. Controversial subjects will show up now and then, no doubt, After Midnight forums or not.
