Just because you're 21, doesn't mean you need to celebrate it by drinking. Drinking isn't something that one needs to do, and certainly isn't something that everyone should do.

I'm about to hit my 21st, and I won't spend it drinking. Several years ago, I made a personal promise to never drink alcohol simply because I don't want to have anythign to do with it. I will never drink.

While I'm on the same boat as you personally, you don't need to bring that up here, and it won't help aran in the slightest (I recognise that you were just trying to console him). The fact of the matter is that aran's grandpa shouldn't have said what he did. Personally not wanting to drink is one thing, disapproving of others drinking is another, but playing the "this is how your loved one died" card or anything similar is going way too far and it shouldn't have been said. This goes for pretty much anything else. He's legally allowed to drink and that's his business if he wants to, so his grandpa didn't have any place trying to guilt trip him over it. I could understand (and would encourage) the grandpa intervening if aran was drinking irresponsibly or was addicted (not saying he is, I'm speaking hypothetically here), but even then, you should never bring the deaths of loved ones into it. That would not help matters at all, and might give an a person more reason to drink because it could depress them.

It was quite rude of your grandfather to say that, but I think he just said it to warn you to not drink too much... Although your birthday wasn't exactly the best time to do it. I don't know him at all, though, so I don't know what his intentions really were. I'm just making assumptions.

Do what you want, just don't overdo it.

very true. i have seen what drinking can do, it killed my father and it's destroying my stepbrother's dad as well. despite that, i think drinking is perfectly ok, so long as you dont over do it. for me i get drunk around every 2 mounts, because there's a reason to celebrate :3

also my grandpa has alzheimer's, so im not going to hang on to the grudge, but spend as much time with him.... is it odd that i have 3 grandpas and 3 grandmas that are still alive?

I've heard that beer tastes terrible.

I've never had any interest in beer or cigarettes and the like. I'd like to spend my money on things that are more beneficial. And alcohol and drugs kill. I like living.

But I digress. This isn't what the topic is about. I'm sorry that your grandfather said that to you, it was terrible time and place to do so. I'm sure he meant well though.

I wouldn't know that feel (I never really had much of a father), but I think your Grandpa was trying to make you cautious about turning to alcohol to deal with problems.

Anyways... c'mon, you need a warm fluffy hug.

If it tastes as bad as it smells, I'm never drinking that stuff. Or at least not the beer my dad always drinks. Maybe it's just something you have to get used to.

If you think about it, too much of anything can kill you, even if you drink too much water, that can still kill you.

Alcohol is a touchy subject, it's fine to have some once in a while, but drugs is ten times worse in my opinion. I'd rather have a drink then smoke a cigarette.

When I was younger, I used to be one of those that said "Oh I will never drink alcohol", and nowadays I drink one or two once every night, and I'm fine. Mind you, it is the cheap stuff that I'm drinking which is really low in volume of alcohol.

When you get to the legal age, it's up to you whether to drink responsibly or not, and if you feel you can't drink responsibly then don't bother with it at all, but in some cases that's easier said then done.

I always felt that the smell of beer to be sweet. I haven't gotten curiosity to try some, though. I prefer if I don't get into it. I used to be around a lot of drinkers when I was in college, but that has stopped and maybe is for the best, since I got asked if I wanted some. Still prefer to hang around them more than smokers, though!

Happy late birthday!
