Disappointment with No Toys for Villains [CLOSED]

Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited for Trap Team after seeing just the trailer and some pictures and hearing about all the new characters you get to play in game as, but as much as Skylanders is about fun gameplay, it also is about collecting all of these cool characters...

That being said, as a lover of the toys, I really don't like the "Trap" mechanic at all. Even in the trailer we saw one character especially - Wolfgang - that I would LOVE to have a toy of, but I'm denied that opportunity because he'll be confined to a tiny glowing jewel. Would also love a Chompy Mage toy for that matter. Anybody with me on this disappointment?

(Sorry if this should be in the Trap Team board, figured since it was about the toys, specifically, it would go here).

Would you have preferred drastically less new Skylanders in favor of Villains figures, or you don't mind having 60 + 40 toys to collect?

I would prefer to pay $10 / fig for 40 extra figs over paying (speculative) $5 / generic trap key x 40

I think all around there's resounding disappointment. They're basically giving us Pokemon and paying for the pokeballs.

let's see yet a new portal instead of making an attachment for the keys - check
keys to capture only a certain amount of bosses - check
gimmick new for the year that will also be abandoned for the next year - check

why would anyone want to really support these decisions? i bet you won't see anything new on the lines of online multiplayer, or maybe that's how coop will happen now?

yes i would actually because it would be different enough to collect them and enough reposing. acti should get into the habit of rereleases of figures either with new bases or packaging

Taking that last ride through the sunset on skylanders. Hopefully a return of more classic spyro gameplay in the horizon.

Hands down, yes. Would've loved to have had fewer more solid ideas in figures and character lineup. I don't *need* 60+ toys to enjoy a game, I'd rather have plenty of unique figures that aren't near carbon copies of other figures just to boost the roster lineup.

If disney infinity 2.0 provides actual marvel figures and not just unlockable accessories for the toy box and alters their gameplay mechanics as well as concept then I predict a definite turning of the tides.

The fact that I have to have some key and no villain figure really let me down.

I was even willing to buy the key and the actual figure. But a silly key alone is really disappointing.

I don't like collecting crystals. It doesn't seem personable to me. I think they're trying too hard. They could've addressed content concern / re playability and given us characters AND not require a new portal.

Good vs. Evil

Start the save file with Good, play the story....Evil turn, play the story, evil wins
Start the save file with Evil, play the story...Good turn, play the story, good wins

Each playthrough has different enemy configurations, objectives, collectables on same level....have areas only good can access...have areas only evil can access...essentially a different game and requires 4 times to play through. Story direction is different depending on which side you start. In essence 2 stories/games in one.

16 good skylanders
16 evil skylanders

Concentrating on gameplay innovation, being able to choose sides AND have evil toys, AND caring for investment in portals we just bought last year.

Who the heck WOULDN'T want a Kaos toy?

I love where you are thinking on this -- the idea that you could have a full playthrough of the game but potentially with different outcomes along the way. Even if there were only 10 (20-40 minute) levels, if there was a sense of pick your own story, there would be massive replayability of the complete storyline.

Its funny you mentioned this. I posted some ideas in some of the other threads about having them make thumb wrestlers or pencil toppers that would fit over the crystals. My gripe is if I have 3 different water crystals how do I know which crystal contains which villain. By placing a rubber or plastic figure over the crystal which villain it is will make it easier to figure out as well as make it more of a physical toy. They are wanting to make the toy seem like it is the villain they have brought from the game to the toy. why not make it so you can put a figure on the top of the crystals and make it so you can switch them out depending on which one you capture on the crystal. Could seeing do them in a four pack or group pack based on element type. So for all the villains you can capture for the water element put them in one pack. They have thumb wrestlers which they are selling in a four pack for 4.99 so wouldn't cost much to do and I'm sure people would buy them. As a side note if they do the thumb wrestlers, I'm sure you will see a bunch children running around with them on there thumbs even when they aren't playing the game. Makes it a physical toy without actually making add to the number of figures you would have to collect. Since the crystals still work whether you place the rubber figure over it or not you make it so its only an optional thing if you want to buy it. Here's the example I showed in the other thread.

This is an example of what I mean by thumb wrestler. And these are only 4.99 for a pack of 4. So it wouldn't be that expensive unless they wanted it to be.

They could just have sold it with the portal and not bother with an owners back. They didn't have to do that with giants and prob will never do that with another game.

They are NOT figures because figures have to be supported in the next game...
Gimmicks don't. Giants and Swapper gimmicks made virtually no appearance in Swap Force.

I very much doubt those crystals will do anything in the next game. Get over it.

If you want figures, get a clever hacker to export the 3D model, import it into a PC and prep it for 3D printing. Send to Thingverse and Bob's your uncle. (DON'T do this, it would be infringing on Acti/TFB copyright!)

I agree with you. I'd rather have figures than crystals.

I'm guessing they wanted the villains to be extra "unlockables". Or the didn't want kids to excitedly run home, rip open their new wolfgang figure's packaging, put him on the portal, and not be able to use it until a specific level.

Why not just take away the trap mechanic? Because innovation.

This seems to be innovation in reverse. The crystals aren't really something you can show off, it's simply a required mechanic for you to utilize villains. I've talked about how they could've innovated on the CONTENT side of things to make villain toys relevant minute one. They aren't thinking outside the portal.
