The song almost constantly goes on about how he's in troubling times but then he calls them beautiful with no real reasoning behind it other than "I'm gonna get through this". Kinda iffy to me, but tbh he was never a great lyricist to begin with.

His best song is still Galaxies.

You obviously haven't heard enough of his songs to know that he is a great lyricist. He doesn't need to sing about himself and girls all the time like most of the stupid musicians nowadays. There is a lot more to his words when you actually listen and think about the meaning he's trying to get across to you. I agree not all of his songs are great lyrical songs but that is no need to call him a bad lyricist and forget about his good ones.

I have listened to All Things Bright and Beautiful and Ocean Eyes. His lyrics are often weak and give me a sense that they were written when he was in middle school, not as an adult. They're also so clean and nice that they feel artificial, and there has rarely been any sense of conflict in most of his songs. I understand that not all songs need to be brooding or emotional. I can tolerate and enjoy mellow and happy songs (I never said I disliked him), but

Quote:
But if I reached for your hand
Would your eyes get wide?

is not a good or realistic lyric in any sense once you're past the age of 14. Which btw, he does sing about girls relatively often. Just not in an overtly sexual manner. Once again I find Galaxies being one of his better songs with better lyrics. And even then he claims that the song is about the Challenger disaster only for it to mostly dwell on his own faith.

Also once you write a song like Dental Care your lyrical credibility kinda drops.

Well maybe if you listened to his new songs you would understand. Maybe try listening to the midsummer station album. Also do you really want to talk about being realistic. The world is a contradiction in itself about what reality is because most of the worlds knowledge is fiction. Just made up because people have to have answers and reasons for thing. Why cant we just enjoy what we have instead of always competing for knowledge. Reality. Being realistic. It's all just words on a page that we humans invented to fulfill some desperate desire to have an answer so our minds can be at ease because you are not worrying or fearing the unknown. So you call his lyrics not good or realistic? Well what is the definition of good realistic music? There isn't one. It varies depending on who likes it and who doesn't. Simple as that. I like it you don't. What does it matter. If it's making people happy then it's serving it's purpose.
Also his focus wasn't to be a great lyricist in the first place, he's more interested in instrumental music and what sounds and melodies mean to people.

That song is just so weird it's somehow funny smilie

Midsummer Station has been on my waiting list for a while now, pending until after I finished ATBAB.

As for the realism thing, I'm fine with fiction. Several of my favorite artists have made songs based around or entirely made out of fictional events. I can deal with that. But Owl's City lyrics are so painfully clean and sanitized that it clearly shows just what his faith is and how much he devotes to it. I'm not going to trash him for being Christian but it has made for some very corny and unrealistic lyrics that are more likely to make me cringe than saw "awwwww". His lyrics, particularly when it comes to love, often feel like an after school special or a Kids Bop edit. Fiction or not there's little that can fix that for me.
His best lyrics have always been when he doesn't focus on such topics. Fireflies and Galaxies are two examples where he does a good job at painting a scene and making good use of his own lyrical skill without taking me out of the illusion.

Also I don't like the argument of "I like it and you don't so why does it matter" because I could easily say the same thing about a band you might not like. I'm not fond of his lyrics but you are more forgiving of them and we can debate that as we do now.

If that was the case he would make more instrumental music. It's clear that his lyrics have meaning to him and he wants to express them. I won't knock him for it but that won't stop me from disliking the content.

Of course they don't have to make sense to be a good song.

But the discussion is about the lyrical content, not if lyrics should matter period. If I only listened to music with thoughtful lyrics then several artists that I listen to regularly would be dumped from my library.

I should probably note once again that I don't dislike Owl City. If I didn't like him I wouldn't have two full albums on an MP3 player that's been running out of space for a long time.
