Due to the new anouncment from nintendo about shutting down the Wifi network...I think this might be a good idea for users to organize an event for the next few months before the shut down.

"EVERYONE:

Although we can't stop the inevitable, I think now might be a good time go back and relive all games we've ever played online through nintendos WFC for the DS/Wii.

I think everyone should spread the word, for the next few months before the shut down, everyone try to FC people here and play some old games for it, for at least one day. Everything from Metroid prime hunters, To Animal crossing wild world, To brawl, to mario kart DS.

If its a game effected by this, lets all just take a moment to enjoy em one last time, even if we abandoned the games long ago, pick em up and play em for just a day.

In fact I think someone needs to make a topic for the general wifi lobby where for one week there is a set of games people should try to play others in that week, and continue this every week until the shut down happens.

I wish I could organize all this myself, but I finally just got full time at my job, so i'ma be working a lot more again. I'll definitely participate if i see the topic, and I'll try to help keep it alive, but as far as organizing it myself deciding which games etc, for each week, i just won't have the time for that...

But seriously, just spread the word around to try and for just one day every day till the shut down, pick an old wifi ds or wii game and play it with other users here for that whole day. "

In case you guys think Kevinvert is crazy, he's not. Nintendo is indeed shutting down their Wi-Fi servers for Wii and DS games. Internet Browsing, Netflix, Wii Shop Channel, DSi eShop, and services like that will still work, but you will not be able to play any Nintendo WFC games online anymore, starting May 20th, 2014. That means no more Mario Kart Wii or Super Smash Bros. Brawl online play after May 20th (at least, officially). Any games that used third party servers, like Monster Hunter Tri, MIGHT still work after May 20th, as those don't run on Nintendo servers. But that's assuming they have not had their servers shut down already.

Nintendo has made an official statement regarding this, saying that they are doing this now because they want to free up their resources for upcoming games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4, and that they want to implement online matchmaking systems into these games.

Personally, it's a good decision. I want Smash 4 to be the best it can be, and that includes online. Brawl's netcode was abysmal, and I can only play with people within a small radius in and around Ireland, which is not an awful lot of players. If making the Wii U's online appeal better requires getting rid of Nintendo WFC, then I am all for it. Nintendo needs to move forward with the Wii U. This move will also be good for the 3DS.

It's not like it was short lived either. Nintendo WFC launched during November in 2005. Meaning it more or less had nine and a half years. The service nearly had a whole decade.

Because servers cost money to run. And Nintendo was getting little revenue from Nintendo WFC at this point, as not many people use it, and no new games were coming out for it. So continuing it would be a waste of money. Money they could be putting towards Wii U, 3DS, and Nintendo Network.

It also gives people another excuse to shift from Wii to Wii U. You may be annoyed that Mario Kart Wii won't work anymore, but Mario Kart 8 is coming out 10 days after Nintendo WFC shuts down, and will be tons better than Wii, as the Wii U's online infrastructure is MILES better than the Wii's. You pretty much don't have to worry about laggy games, and Smash 4 is going to run really well by the sounds of it, much better than the lag fest that was Brawl online.

Miiverse is on the 3DS and WiiU.

They're only shutting down internet services for the Wii & DS. NOT THE 3DS OR WIIU.

Besides, Miiverse is highly overrated.

Mario Kart 8 will have online play. It's like saying "I'm getting a pizza, but there's a chance there won't be dough on it." Plus, it costs money to run servers, and to host it.

I'm looking forward to what they have to bring. I remember that the Online was a big deal for me when I was choosing between Nintendo, PS3, and Xbox. PS3 with having online for free and better graphics, I went with that.

Oh and does this mean every friend code and Nintendo ID will be gone? Or will it be put on stand by?
I'm wondering if I should delete the Nintendo ID and Friend codes from the Share your Online IDs topic.

Honestly, I don't think this is that much of an issue. If it means better online for newer games, then yay. I see why people who can't upgrade are disappointed, but it was pretty much inevitable. The only game I think it was really premature for them to do this with is Pokémon, BW2 only came out a couple of years ago...

Pssst. Some people are gonna try to keep playing MKWii online though. It involves doing things to your console that I can't talk about here so I won't link the thing, just wanted to say... this might lead to it happening with other games...

BW2 had it's time, X and Y is already out, so there is no excuse not to upgrade for Pokémon fans.
The only thing this is truly unfortunate for is the Project M mod for Brawl, which people play online in legally. The mod only truly got attention when it hit Version 3.0 there in December, and even more recently, they created a launcher app that can be used for updating the game directy from your Wii. I'm not sure if the launcher is effected, but you can't play online in Project M by legal means after May 20th.

You can already play online through Dolphin if you have a PC capable of running it. I can run Brawl in Dolphin without any issues, as well as the Project M mod, so I could already play online in those via it's netplay feature. Heck, I could play online in Melee if I wanted to.

Yeah, but somehow I doubt people who can't afford to upgrade to a Wii U or 3DS will buy a gaming PC. A lot of people who would go the emu route for playing these games online would probably already have a gaming PC and already be doing it by now. I'm not really into PC gaming but I hear that if you want a good PC it'll cost the same as one of those consoles anyway. If I were in the situation I would probably just go for a gaming PC anyway because I could use it for more new stuff but with the way these people are planning to do it it looks like you won't have to spend any extra to join in, which is really good for a lot of people.

Pokemon uses the Nintendo WFC servers, and that's what they're shutting down. If they wanted to keep that game going, they'd have to create new servers for it, which is impossible, as the game itself is built to access Nintendo WFC. And DS games can't be patched or anything.

This. People really need to stop complaining. As much as it sucks that they are doing this, you have to realize why they are doing this.

1) To make more profits off of the Wii U and 3DS. Now that the wifi is closed for the DS, it might make people want to get a 3DS or a Wii U. Besides they are making new version of games, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Pokemon, which are the most commonly used for online. So you will still be getting the games with the same online features. Now if you don't have one of the systems ir you cannot get one at the moment, then yes you have a reason to complain but realize...

2) They have a a lot of online networks with both the Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS. So by cutting out older dated systems, Wii and DS, they are saving themselves time and money. Think about constantly having to ominotr four different online services, not fun and a lot of money too. With just two of the most recent online services, Wii U and 3DS, then they save themselves more time and money while having a easier time fixing problems with any online malfunctions.

Honestly this was expected, they can't keep up services that aren't really in right now and are "outdated".

Pokémon Bank may have had a smoother release if they had that extra online infrastructure the Wii and DS are clogging up.

And I know how big of a deal you guys made about that little app... :V

Honestly, I think this is the best choice that Nintendo has made to make people want to get the Wii U and the 3DS.

The Wii U is having terrible sales, as I am sure some of you know. When the Wi-Fi goes down, it will make more people think that the Wii U is a completely different system. In fact, because so many people think that the Wii U is just an add-on, that is one of the reasons that it isn't selling well. Once the Wi-Fi goes down, I think it will change peoples' opinions.

The 3DS is doing quite well, but it could still use the extra support. Many people still think the 3DS is just the same as the DSi, only that it has 3D capability. It would be nice, but the people wouldn't want to buy it just for that. If it is the only DS system to go online? YES! People would want to buy that. Because they want to go online with their friends.

^Actually, the Wii U has been picking up lately. Granted, it's past performance was terrible and has put it in a bit of a hole that it needs to climb out of, but it's apparently been improving since Christmas. And Nintendo already has big changes in store for their business plan with the Wii U, so hopefully they make the most of it.

One of the things Nintendo needs to do is stop focusing so much on the 3DS, though.

No, 3DS will still have internet connections. DS games won't

You can still battle and trade over the internet in X & Y.

You won't be able to in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Black, Black 2, White, or White 2.

I don't appreciate some of you guys telling us that we shouldn't be disappointed. I'm entitled to my own opinion.
I don't have a Wii U or 3DS, and probably never will. So while I am glad that other people will be able to better enjoy new Wi-Fi games, I will never enjoy one out of Nintendo again.

In other words, this is doing nothing positive for me personally, only stealing what I paid for...

I don't appreciate some of you guys telling us that we shouldn't be disappointed. I'm entitled to my own opinion.

It happens though. You paid for a handheld system and got a handheld system. You paid for games and got games. As far as i know Nintendo never charged for access to wifi services so what exactly is being stolen? Something you had access to for free is going away. Its had it's run. It happens when things get older.

It's fine by me at this point. No more pokegen and pokedit! smilie now if they could only do away with Powersave -___-
