Miyamoto has also been rumored to be secretly hard at work on cooking up a new franchise for Nintendo and Wii U. I am personally hoping that he is taking a serious stab at a Skylanders competitor! I love the series but knowing Nintendo and Miyamoto, there is totally a chance if they take a stab at the genre that they could produce a Pixar movie to Skylander's Dreamworks films.

Going to move this to Video Gaming because it's technically about Nintendo, not Skylanders. Eh, I'd rather they not use the Skylanders method. Even if they're toys, they're still basically an extreme case of DLC overload. I've said it before: any game that forces you to pay extra to achieve 100% completion is flawed in my books. <.<

At this point Skylanders has become such a juggernaut in this field, the only way Nintendo would be able to compete would be making such a game based around established Nintendo characters, Smash Bros style.
They'd probably have a better chance at making money bringing Captain Rainbow to the west. |

I agree that building it around a new IP or franchise would lose that benefit of Nintendo's beloved roster of characters in the way Disney capitalized on with Infinity, but Nintendo at their best understands the game side of this equation better than anyone else in the business. It's a total wildcard but I wonder what they could come up with that's different but more compelling on the game half side of the experience, and I feel like it's very possible they could come up with something unexpectedly amazing after experimenting with a lot of different ways to combine toys + games and produce "fun", which is always their ultimate goal. I certainly trust Nintendo (led by Miyamoto ) to do a better job than Disney Infinity's kind of contrived mashup of Minecraft and Skylanders. Skylanders really got it, Toys for Bob definitely nailed it out of the gate. Infinity seems more designed by the board room and not as elegant or pure fun as a result… And that's not to say Nintendo couldn't do their Smash Bros style cast of all star Nintendo characters in some NFC powered game. The way they excuse that mashup of many Nintendo universes is the Smash Bros. being toy figures that come to life to fight which you see in the games' opening cinematics. Sounds kind of like Skylanders already! Quote: HIR
What interests me the most about the possibility of Nintendo doing a Skylanders type game, is for it to be a trojan horse way to get Nintendo games and experiences across other systems, and expand their reach to trying to target every kid growing up. Too many kids in today's world are growing up without any experiences platforming with Mario or adventuring in Hyrule to save Zelda, or trying to catch em all. This could be a way to reach them with Nintendo's best characters, stories and gaming experiences in a way that doesn't entirely give up the level of control their own platforms offer them, or the money to be made in hardware. I'm obviously a fan of Nintendo but I also like all consoles loving games in general. On the whole these days, most gaming experiences are cross platform, meanwhile Nintendo's have always been locked to their hardware and there has been a feedback loop over the past few Nintendo consoles where their home consoles especially are increasingly becoming dedicated Nintendo game playing machines. That's a tough pitch in a world where you have single devices that can 'do everything' like smartphones and tablets, or competing consoles supporting a much larger library of third party games. And it is kind of sad to me to think of all the kids growing up on Call of Duty without even knowing what Mario or Zelda or Pokémon is about. You could argue Skylanders took advantage of this situation and took over this generation of kids' imaginations, much like Pokémon did back in the gameboy days. I'm actually really glad they did, because the state of kids games on non Nintendo consoles otherwise just seems lacking magic… and Skylanders seems to have stepped in and fixed that. I do think too many kids these days are missing out of Nintendo's best. |

It is actually rumoured that the new Smash Bros on Wii U is supposed to utilise NFC technology to let you purchase figurines of the characters so you can gain access to completely optional mini-games (meaning they won't be part of the main game and are not used to unlock anything for the main game. It would probably be a feature aimed at kids). Luckily, the rumour specified that they wouldn't be required to play as the characters in normal play. For a bit of perspective, this rumour comes from a whole list of them some guy who claims to have been on the inside put out. So far, some of his rumours have come true, such as all 4 announced newcomers, and Ashley from Warioware becoming an assist trophy. -------------- As for this news in general, doesn't Nintendo already have this, in the form of Pokémon Rumble on the Wii U? I remember watching a Nintendo Direct where that was shown off, and Iwata said that although you can get every Pokémon through in-game means, you can also buy figurines and unlock the Pokémon via NFC technology. Or maybe, just maybe, Non-Specific Action Figure is getting his own franchise. @v@

Imagine:
All Star Trophies. You get a figure of a character from a game bundled with a game (Say, you get a Tom Nook Figure bundled with Animal Crossing), and you place in on the game Pad in a completely unrelated game, say Mario kart. Bam, Nook is in Mario Kart! And the figures would work for alot of games! (There would be limits as to who could participate in what game, but stiil!) Playing as Mega Man in Metroid, Link in Fire Emblem, Kirby in Donkey Kong......Think about it!
