Exactly. Skylanders is both an extremely popular game, and an extremely popular toy line.

Yes it does actually. Two games coming out that a kid really anticipates for, but his/her parents will only get one or the other instead of both. It should come as no surprise that Pokémon is the 2nd most profitable gaming franchise in the world behind the Mario series and that Pokémon X and Y sold about 4 million copies within its first weekend. Not only does it have popular main games but also a crap load of merchandise like Spin-Off games, Trading Cards, Board Games, Toys, a (terrible) TV Show, Fanmade Games, Movies, and its games can even be played in competitive tournaments and is a popular competitive PVP game, especially on Pokémon Showdown.com. Skylanders has competitive PvP as well and a few of those other things, but it doesn't have online multiplayer and is nowhere near as Popular as other PvP games like Super Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Skullgirls, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat, and even old classic ones like Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, Marvel vs Capcom 2, or even Vampire Savior. I don't think you'll be seeing Skylanders at big tournaments anytime soon, if ever at all. Maybe some of these people who already bought X and or Y didn't want to or couldn't spend more money another game, and had to push SWAP Force away because of it. Not everyone can or wants to buy 2 games at the same time, especially not when it will cost a total of $115, Ever thought of that?

Not only that, but Pokémon X and Y are significantly cheaper than both Infinity and SWAP Force. It should also come as no surprise that some people are hesitant to buy Infinity/Skylanders because they know from the beginning that its going to make hell for their wallets should they invest in it and its toys for optional (though essential) improvement, nor do they wanna spend $10-$15 for one measly character. Cheaper games are obviously gonna sell more than expensive ones.

Just because they aren't the same thing doesn't mean they can't competitors, anything can be competition if they can steal some of your thunderbolts. And I didn't say Pokémon was Skylanders' main competitor, I just said that it was at least a competitor at all, one that could've left a scar on its Sales. Basically every video game is competing with one another for sales like they're wild animals, Skylanders and Pokémon are no exceptions and they too are rivals. Its still a likewise competitor for Skylanders, just not as much as Infinity. Activision themselves even admitted Pokémon X and Y to be one for these reasons: came out a day before SWAP Force and sold 4 million units on the first weekend despite being a vastly different game, which could potentially draw at least some kids away from Skylanders. My point still stands.

And as ridiculous ass it might sound, Activision also declared the Xbox One and Playstation 4 systems to be a likewise cause for Skylanders' flushing sales. Even though SWAP Force was coming out on both systems, a lot of people preordered these systems and have to pay like $500 for them, and won't have enough money to get SWAP Force along with it.


EDIT: A New version of Disney Infinity will include Marvel and Star Wars characters revealed an hour ago... and yet they're laying off several hundreds of their staff despite the success of the first Disney Infinity. Hope that doesn't ruin it..
