I know that the word Shemp appears several times in Spyro, and that it's speculated to be some sort of an Insomniac in-joke, but does anyone know the meaning of it?

I heard it comes from the term Fake Shemp.

Quote: Wikipedia
Fake Shemp or simply, "Shemp," is the term for someone who appears in a film as a replacement for another actor or person. Their appearance is disguised using methods such as heavy make-up, filming from the back, or perhaps only showing an arm or a foot.

That must be why you have to flame Dr. Shemp's back in order to defeat him. Although, it still doesn't explain why it's a recurring term in the Spyro trilogy.

I met Oliver Wade and asked him specifically about Doctor Shemp. He said that "getting the Shemp" was a euphemism at Insomniac for messing something up and was named after the fourth Stooge (from the Three Stooges) that nobody liked.

So, should we consider this a precursor to the Snow Beast Award? :3

Thanks, you two. I've been curious for sometime. It makes sense now.

It would have been really funny if they made Shemp'd a phrase for Spyro wiping out on the skateboarding minigames in YotD. XP

Why must you be so genius when it comes to coming up with hilarious ideas? XP

It's totally not cause I always wiped out skateboarding. Yeah, that's definitely got nothing to do with that idea. <.< >.>

Isn't there a move in the skateboarding game that references the Shemp anyway? Or was that just somewhere in the code?

No, there's a Shemp trick. But given the joke, using it for failing would've made more sense. XP

Oh, okay. I honestly just try to pretend the skating minigames don't exist (I hate them so much). XD

^ Really, Razz? Huh. That's the only reason why my older brother played the third game.

I'm super bad at the skateboard levels and no amount of practicing on them ever seemed to change that. XD

I'm pretty sure Insomniac was taking cues from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater at the time. So anyone who played that game probably had a bit of an advantage. @.@

Oh, yes, they definitely were. The mini games had a lot of parodies of current trends (at least in Spyro 3; Doom, Tomb Raider, racing games, etc.). But I never liked Tony Hawk as a person so I didn't play his games back in the day (or ever). XD

I was good at Tony Hawk, but the mechanics of the Spyro skate boarding were comparatively very mediocore.
