Ex: Joe asked "Are you a boy?" I said "Yes."
Does that work?

In this example, "Yes." or "No." would be an incomplete or fragmented sentence. "Yes, I am a boy." or "No, I am a girl" would be a complete sentence.

Verbal dialogue is different than writing. If you are writing dialogue it is okay to do that but for an assignment or something like that you should use proper language. Then again, if an assignment is to write dialogue it's okay to use something like that.
