Hey everyone I just got back from GameStop and was talking to an employee about wave 3 and he said he had heard through the grape vine that Activision was going to end the franchise because Disney Infinity had taken over the market. I find that incredibly hard to believe but I was wondering if anyone else could give me some information on what's going on?

I wouldn't trust a Gamestop employee on Skylanders if they have no knowledge on the franchise. There is a fourth Skylanders game in development as we speak.

Pffffftttt, The Skylanders franchise has generated more than $2 billion in worldwide retail sales. Its not going anywhere. Sounds like someone at Gamestop is a Disney Infinity fan and trying to push some of their own wishful thinking on others.

Yep. Nine times out of ten the things that come out of employees at stores like this are their personal agendas. I'd take anything said by a Gamestop employee with a grain of salt. As far as I know Skylanders has outsold Infinity and there is no chance it's going anywhere any time soon.

I've actually seen Skylanders take over the DI shelf space in a store. I'd say there's a better chance for a Skylanders 5 then a Skylanders 2.

I'm not sure why Gamestop would have a mission to dismiss Skylanders.

I'm also pretty sure no one said Disney would quit on Infinity. But it's clear it's not a fun franchise...for me.

Well, seeing as gamestop is hoping to drive sales by offering a year old ssidekick it looks like gamestop doesn't think skylanders have pasted thier prime.

Target sold out of swappers before thier sale even sstarted. It certainly seems like sales are good because wave 1 are hard to find.

Activision is not going to let a money making franchise die, if you follow thier history. They are generally even willing to take a lose and release a game after that with a different marketing strategy.

NEVER trust gamestop. They're probably just saying that because they want you to buy more figures, like when they told me Luigi's Mansion 2 was coming out on May 2nd 2012 (real release was march 24 2013) just to get me to preorder it.

Spectrobes is the next Pokemon
Lego is going to stop making toys because kids play Minecraft more
Nintendo is going to stop making Mario games because of rough competition from Microsoft's first party platformer games
See what I'm doing there?

Real talk:
I see a bunch of the same Skylanders at Gamestop all the time. At least in my area, Toys R Us and Walmart are more reliable at getting in the latest waves. An employee could see people passing up the enormous pile of wave 1 and LC Hex as a sign that it's not doing as well overall, not knowing how it's moving in other stores.
TRU has been having sales more often as well, which could be hurting traffic to other stores too.

Hey guys,

I think he gets the sarcasm! smilie

I tried to play Infinity. I couldn't get into it. Yeah, it has the toy box mode but that just didn't do enough for me. The levels make you feel like you are one big errand boy instead of an actual adventure. The actual design of the figures are very well done, the game not so much for me. Skylanders has at least another two games in it. Some point they will have to do something with online play hopefully they don't mess that up.

I work at Game Stop, and i follow skylanders. Infinity is doing well but Skylanders is a Cash Cow. expect them to milk this until the cow is dead and decomposed. The Game Stop employee is clueless. Think of this as Guitar Hero, they'll keep pumping them out until people dont care anymore. Infinity will last longer because of the endless characters they can add, that yes we all loved growing up. I expect 2-3 more years of Skylanders.

Despite being a loyal skylander fan, I hoped swap force would be the last. I'm sick of my parents hounding me everytime I buy a new figure. It's not their money idk why they worrying. Anyway knowing myself, I'll go for the next skylander game if it's longer than swap force's campaign, even though I told myself in retiring after swap force is done. So much for that. Plus I'm using a target bag to transport my swap force characters. I have a whole duffle bag full of them from the first and second games. I'm running out of room.

I do feel bad for Gamestop in a way in regards to these figure based games. They have on the average much smaller retail space than other box stores, specialize in all things gaming, but cannot support the amount of space required to compete with the gigantic Toys R Us spaces or even the Target/Wal-mart shelf spaces. But, being the all things gaming store, folks are apt to go there as a first stop and ask for the latest figure or to see if they have one in back. Many Gamestop backrooms look more like closets than storerooms I'd imagine.

I'm sure Gamestop would be just as happy for the "figures to life" thing died tomorrow. The figures between Skylanders and now Disney Infinity take up vital wall space that could be used for other merchandise and new console games. They do these events because to ignore the craze completely would be stupid given the amount of money it brings in. Its highly unlikely something Gamestop sees worth investing a lot in, because they quickly dismissed buying and reselling the used figures. You can get roughly 7 console game cases onto a shelf space where one single core Skylander case would be. $10 vs $420 ($60x7)

Someone has to buy these games they put on th shelves instead is skylanders and I hope most people don't (GS is so expensive here). My favorite gamestop employee told me the figures are, in general, selling well (Disney infinity is absolutely no factor here in germany) and they have a decent profit margin.

The game isn't ending anytime soon.

Graphically speaking, I agree. From a playability...there are design decisions that make the first two games more appreciated from a long term playing perspective they got wrong in Swap Force...lots of threads discussing this.

Give it time and it will happen! Just a handful of you out there are very into this game series as being a diehard/collector! How many different characters do we have now over 100+! Do we really need anymore! Have some DLC not a whole entire new game that I need 50+ new characters that doesn't work with the old stuff! To me it's been way to drawn out and I'm actually kind of bored with swap force even though I'm just on the second chapter just for the fact that its the same old thing just in a different package!

honestly i think they're really stretching what they can do with the games at this point and there isn't any other gimmick they can pull out except the usage of online in some manner. Be it cyber skylanders, etc as doing giant figures and swapable ones there really is not much else you can do with a figure that will be feasibly profitable.

If they do make a forth game I don't expect spyro to be tied to it as series 3 figures seem to be the limit and the idea will be something at its own at that point. I really expect this to be about done with most people stopping to collect them after swap force.

Now there's too many variants, which is why I stopped buying many figures at once simply because they would do the repaints to cash in on ones not selling (Sprocket) which I pre ordered only because otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to get her this time around. I see that will be the trend for most figures now.

Which is the point. Because they release the games within a year the campaigns can only have a certain length to them and they do their dlc as the adventure packs to cover their ground on ideas they couldn't fit in. With so many figures and eclipsing around 200 figures about now with all these extra variants, some people have mass collections now and they aren't going to keep collecting them to play the games.
---
Taking that last ride through the sunset on skylanders. Hopefully a return of more classic spyro gameplay in the horizon.

If the technology with the figures exists.... I think they could pull off some sort of "transforming" like figures as a gimmick. So Skylander is a elf warriors for said example, you can then twist the head up and around, and he turns into a werewolf warrior or something. The figure is still all "one piece" so its not really a "swapper" but its still using the same type of magnet tech internally.

I would like to see the characters that got Series 3s this time around get a break on the next game. Though I doubt that'll happen for some of them.
