Bought Skylanders for kids, might've got carried away [CLOSED]

So I decided to take the plunge and pick up Skylanders for the kids for Christmas, they are 7 and 5 years old. I think it will be a good age, at least I hope so.

Started by picking up giants for $49.99 (all prices Canadian) then grabbed Swap force starter kit since it was on sale for $49.99 as well. Few days later I went and picked up nitro magna charge/rattle shake double pack from target for $27.99.

Kinda realized at that point I'm not too crazy about paying retail for these things so I went looking onli e for some used ones in my area.

I managed to snag S:SA plus a whole bunch of original skylanders for $100. Included were all of the original 32 skylanders except sunburn, cynder and wham shell. Also included we're several adventure type packs: empire of ice, dragon peaks, bunch of power ups including anvil, potion, ghost swords, hourglass, shield, dragonfly, etc. I think it's pretty much all the original stuff other than the pirate ship and dark light crypt figures were missing (even though the other stuff that came in the packs was there.

Pretty sure that was $100 well spent anyways. Kinda got caught up with purchasing these things but now I'm darn close to having all of the original ones and I'm tempted to s at the few missing pieces just to comete the set. I understand wham shell and dark light will be the tricky parts to come by.

I was also pretty tempted to grab enough of the swap force figures to be able to unlock all areas of that game, I think I still need free ranger, hoot loop, rubble rouser, and stink bomb to make that happen. The other part of me thinks spending $15 a pop for these things is damn pricey if I can pick them up used in a year for a lot less.

Anyways I guess this is a bit of an introduction/ open to any advice for a new skylander Dad thread.

LOL. I'm in a similar boat, except that these are for me first. My kids (9 and 7) will have to fight me for playing time.

For me, started with asking for Swap Force and some figures/packs for Christmas....and now I find myself bargain hunting anything I don't think I'll get under the tree. (oh no...)

That's all you need to know right there. Sounds like you got a lot and if you feel that the money was well spent, then it's all good.

Welcome too. .... it has only just begun...

I feel your pain. It's been a year now and have all that's sold except for most of the chase variants. The most I would ever spend is $30.00

Lol, you'll have that.

I lucked out for both SSA and SG, I bought most of them from craigslist used.
But Im feeling the pinch on SF.

All my son has at the moment is the dark starter, but Ive bought him all of whats available.
He'll have a good xmas and birthday thats a week later.

Watch out though, once you commit to buying an entire collection ie all of SSA, either you will feel compelled or your kids will compel you to go full monty for the other 2 collections.

Buy as many as you can used, it helps rationalize the insanity.

My son wasn't into Skylanders until he found EvanTube HD. I am pretty sure EvanTube is running everyday at my house. My whole family knows who Evan is and my son tries to do the reviews like Evan.

My husband makes fun of me because I am more committed to buying the figures that my son. He is 7 and loves the games and figures. He is going to rack up for Christmas with SSA and Swap Force. He got Giants in July. I think the top of my closet is an inventory room for Skylanders! The sales at Toysrus have really helped me get up to speed with charaters I was late to the party for. I am overwhelmed by all the characters in Swapforce and will probaby focus on the swappers and a few of the cool other characters! I enjoy the hunt but, will never be able to get them all and I am finally ok with that. Baby steps...

well i and son have had the bug from the beginning and have all of the core and most chase variants as well i think we are well over 190+ pieces including magic pieces and battle and adventure packs. I am just glad him an I can do this together we go hunting just about every other day after school and always on the weekend. Have been very lucky finding variants so far. Found 2 each of the silvers in the beginning with SSA, found 1 each of the golds in SSA, and many of the SG variants, Only have 1 ToyFair and some crystals no E3's but am hoping to get one soon.

It starts.... Lol. That's all I can say about it. But I find it odd how in the $100 purchase you managed to get dragon's peak without a sunburn since he/she is part of the set unless the person sold it prior to you. Good luck on that original wham shell. You'll need it.

Oh trust me, there are MANY, MANY worse ways people get carried away, specifically the users that go ballistic finding the ultra rare "treasure hunt" variants.

Welcome to the forum! It all started trying to find Eye Brawl and Thumpback for us (my son and I) back in January, now we have all available regulars and in-game variants. Still hunting for chase variants. In the words of Garth -"It's like a new pair of underwear. At first it seems constrictive....but after awhile it becomes a part of you".

Good time for this topic.....after following these forums, I have realized the importance of checking TRU occasionally for new supplies. Had a few minutes to stop by tonight and at the end of very careful checking for something cool/rare, managed to find an SSA 3-pack including Boomer and Voodood!

On top of that, TRU still has the $10 for SSA 3-packs going on. I am way too excited about this!

Good to know, Skylanders isn't on my girls' radar at all at the moment but I suspect they will really enjoy it. I will definitely check out EvanTube when I have the chance. Sounds like my closet as well haha.

Good catch. Someone came and bought the Sunburn and Dark light crypt separately for $5 each (I have Ghost Roaster etc. though from the pack). They were originally asking $120 but I got them down to $100 without those two pieces. I saw they included the card for Cynder but no figure and the treasures (is that the right word for the other stuff that came in the pack) for the pirate seas but no pirate ship itself, which means they had those items at some point but weren't included. No big deal.

At this point for the S:SA set it looks like I need:

Sunburn (someone offering it for $5 used if I can snag it locally)
Wham Shell (Looks like at least $40....)
Cynder (Appears to be cheap and easy to find)

Darklight Crypt (About $20)
Pirate ship (Looks like $15-20)
I'm don't think I'm going to go for Volcanic vault... do people consider this a legit part of the set?

I suspect it would be all too easy to end up chasing the other sets as well. I can certainly see how many of you have large collections.

Wham Shell will probably go down once the Swap Force version comes out. In theory, it will work in the previous games as, at least, a series 1. With that said, I went to TRU, today, knowing they were getting in some cases of SSA. I found Wham Shells in the case. I already have one, so I left it.

This started for me when my son turned 6 and wanted S:SA, I was so wrapped up in the game in the span of a week that I had to keep going one month later I had the whole set minus the variants. Then Giants came and I joined DS to keep up on and share info. I became so addicted to the hunt that I began buying in game variants, and now here I sit figuring the cost of skylanders into my monthly budgets,

Welcome to the loony bin, its awesome in here.

Welcome to the craziness. Depending on where you are located, you might get lucky. One store near me had a bunch of Scarlet Ninjinis, a couple of the adventure sets with terrafin (2) and ghost roaster (1), a wham shell, and several other series one singles that I hadn't seen in a while (no Boomer though). It was like someone found a couple of boxes in a dusty corner of the warehouse or something. I bought a Scarlet Ninjini because I hadn't ever seen her before, the rest I had already.
I'm still not happy about shelling out $75 bucks to get a Gnarly Tree Rex and Punch Pop-Fizz and a couple months later they came out in single packs.
The Wham Shell was really cheap on e-bay a few months ago, must be that all the cases that him included sold out.

Good to know. My local stores don't have much in the way of Spyro's or Giants figures at all. I don't plan to pay more than $20 for a figure so we will see how that goes. I think with some patience it might work out.

Carried away is when you buy everything that came out on Oct 13th (the release day) for Swap Force + 360 Starter....then Wave 2.... then the Dark Edition Wii (sold the game and portal) then a WiiU (w/ the exclusive character) plus the 3DS Starter (w/exclusive character). Before Skylanders we only had a Wii and 360 console. Now we have another Wii, WiiU, and 3DS XL. Good thing I am in charge of balancing the checkbook. So yeah true to my sig..sigh Though I've seen other DS members collections. They're amazing.

Now we are awaiting Wave 3. Bummed that Jolly is out this weekend and we're going to be out of town for a soccer tournament.

TRU has pirate seas new for $10 i would just get a complete set new, same with sunburn. You could then try to sell fof the used parts i guess.

The resale of the 8GB WiiU isn't bad. I've seen it go for that much on Ebay, so it's like getting a free wash buckler (sorta)

My parents don't care a thing, either way, so they never bought my younger siblings any 'landers. We all had to use our own money (*gasp*), but the grandparents sometimes did.
Sam's Club had SSA triple packs for $17 used to, dunno if they still do.

Welcome aboard!

We bought our 7 year old DS the SG game for his birthday last spring. We had resisted getting the game because I was concerned that we would get sucked into buying all the figures. I vowed to only get one or two figures from each element. LOL.

7 months later we have the complete SG line of figures, including Bash that I paid $30 for. I also bought a Ebay lot with the SSA game disc and a bunch of used SSA figures. The lot had every figure we wanted including Dark Spyro that is a must have on my DS's Christmas list. It even had a S1 Bash but I sold series 1 Bash with the extra figures because I had to have the S2 Bash . I know it would bother me to have all the SG figures except Bash.

DH and I had a discussion with our DS about what we all thought was most important to collect. We have decided to collect one version of every figure and skip the variants. So, for SSA I only added the figures that we did not have from the SG line. For Swap Force we are not getting Series 3 figures only all the new Swappers and new Skylanders, except for the Swap Force S2 and S3 figures that come in the starter packs and battle packs. Our one exception is Mega Ram Spyro. DH and I thought since we have the S2 Spyro and Dark Spyro it would be cool to have the Mega Ram version as well. What can I say? We have a soft spot for Spyro. I also caved and got both the PS3 and 3DS versions of Swap Force. I caught a good sale and a great price match. I got them both games for $27 each with two free figures on top of that.

I had to get them both because we have both systems and they have different figures. It would be silly to pass up a deal like that. Right?

DS is going to flip when Santa brings both the PS3 and 3DS Swap Force games. He is getting the SSA figures from us for Christmas. I already have all the wave 1 and wave 2 figures tucked away. He will only get 3 extra figures with his games on Christmas, but DS buys his figures from me instead of the store. I let him buy them at the sale price. He likes a good deal and the fact that mommy snaps up all the figures when she sees them so we don't miss out on any.

Welcome aboard. I am not really one for video games, but I love playing Skylanders with our DS. We play as a family which makes it easier to justify all the figures we buy.

I was motivated to learn the game because I wanted something that I would enjoy playing with my DS. I had heard that Skylanders appealed to both boys and girls, so I decided to learn as much as I could about the game before giving it to him. And, I decided that I would play with him. We will usually play a level on the weekends. And, by play a level I mean go through it and try and earn all three stars. Usually one person will read the walk through here while the other two play. Prior, to getting the Skylanders game my DH and DS would play video games together and I was left out. I wanted a way to play with my DS. I don't find many of the things he is into terribly interesting except Lego and Skylanders. His previous phase was Pokemon and my eyes would glaze over when he would go on about Pokemon. I much prefer collecting Skylanders figures to all those Pokemon cards scattered everywhere. And all the trading drama. They drove me nuts.

I know how you feel. My oldest daughter is mostly into horses but that's not really my thing. I'm hoping it will be something we can share together. I have S:SA for the Wii and S:G, S:SF for the xbox360. My wife doesn't really play any games at all right now but I'm hoping I can hook her on it too so it's something we can ll share. I guess I will find out if the controls on the Wii or the 360 are easier for her.
