Okay so I have been thinking about purchasing a wii u for my b-day but I was wondering do you need motion plus controllers/adapters to actually play the games?

Well, some of the multiplayer games (like The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest) do, but most of them don't.
If you're going singleplayer, the Wii U Gamepad is all you'll ever need, though many games support tons of various controllers so you can choose the one that you like the best. |

You might need it for some games (such as the new Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics game - even in single player, you'd need it), but these instances are extremely rare.

You need one to play Wii Sports Club, a new software that is added to the home screen once you get the latest update ^.^

Like others have said, it depends on the game. However, it seems as if Nintendo is seriously pushing MotionPlus for most of their games. In NIntendo Land, The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest and Metroid Blast require it for players using Wii Remotes, Wii Sports Club requires it despite being a remake of a game that was released a few years before MotionPlus (Wii Sports), Pikmin 3 can be played with or without it but is best with it and Nintendo seems to be referring to Wii Remotes as Wii Remote Pluses (Wii Remotes with built-in MotionPlus) in most games, noting afterwards that a standard Wii Remote with the MotionPlus accessory/just a standard Wii Remote will also work.

I would say, be on the safe side, get one. Some games DO require them.

No clue... Most likely not, for those three... I think they're gamepad and Wii Remote for second/third/fourth players... But, it's thinking, depending on what other games you might want in the future, if you're not just going to use the gamepad/get a Wii U Pro Controller. Thing is, it's recommended to have at least one... |
