Nice! That's even better than the TRU deal of BOGO 70%, since TRU has inflated baseline prices.

Well it breaks down to this...with the current buy 1 get one 40% off promo at TRU, it comes to effectively 20% off a figure if both are the same price. With the TRU Black Friday, it'll be buy 1 get one 70% off which effectively comes to 35% off a figure. With Target's buy 2 get 1 free promo, it'll be 33.3% off a figure when you buy 3 of the exact same price. Both sales are good. If TRU still has core Skylanders at $9.99, then the best deal for them will be at TRU at an effective price of 35% off every 2 that you purchase. However, the better deal for the swappers will be at Target considering the extra 1.7% savings is negated by the extra dollar they charge for the lightcores and swappers. Personally, both deals are fairly good...I'd go with Target if you have a lot of gaps to fill in your collection and can buy in multiples of 3 to maximize the discount. If you just need a few odd figures and don't want to be forced to buy 3 of a kind (core, lightcore, or swapper), Toys R Us may be a better bet. I definitely wouldn't brave the black Friday crowds at both stores just for Skylanders to get a slightly better deal for corelanders at TRU and a slightly better deal for lightcores/swappers at Target.

It's good only if you get the same priced figure. like 3 swappers, 3 cores, 3 lightcores etc. If you mix them up it aint so good.

I didn't think the B2G1 was a good deal with TRU's sale, but I never thought about TRU's mark ups, either. I'm still hoping to stick with TRU, though. Since he already has so many Skylanders, we told him he could only have a couple of swappers for Christmas and go from there. All his Skylanders, this year, are going to come from grandparents and anyone else who wants to get them. Since he's only getting 2, the B1G1 70% is better for us. His grandparents are giving us $40 to buy the starter pack at TRU. Since I have the $10 coupon, I figured I would use the extra $10 towards the other Skylanders. Wendy's is also going to have a coupon in their kids meals that offer a $10 GC with a $50 purchase. I saw it in an e-mail from them, but not sure if they're out yet or if they will be valid by then, but I say they will be. Since the $10 coupon is a mfg coupon, I doubt it will take away from the $37.49 price. So I would only have to spend $12.51 more to get a $10 GC!

So I see it as:

$37.49 Starter Pack
$16.99 Swap Force character
$5.10 Swap Force (after 70%)
===========
$59.58
- $10 coupon
======
$49.58
- $10 GC
=======
$39.58

And aren't there $1 coupons with the chips? Were they for Swap Force or SSA/Giants? That could save me another $1 or $2

There's also an in-store deal (without coupon) that gives you $10 off $75. Doubt I'll go that much, although I'll only need another $15. There's also a deal that if you create a wish list and have $100 worth purchased from it, they will send you a $10 GC. Not sure if I'll get that much in the end, but you never know. We haven't created one for our daughter, yet, so I'm thinking about just putting her stuff on my son's wish list and letting people know, so it might be easier to get to the $100.

It looks like Toys R Us prices on their website for corelanders have reverted back to $10.99, so the best deals for Black Friday are the buy 2 get 1 free sales at both Target and Best Buy. TRU no longer offers a price advantage factoring in the extra dollar charged on all figures. Targets offers an additional 5% off with their Redcard and Best Buy has their reward program (just changed names from Reward Zone), so take that into consideration when shopping. The starter packs can be had at Walmart for under $30 on Black Friday if you still have the $10 off coupons from the Frito Lay sidekicks bags.

It's hard to have an "opinion" on math.
B2G1 free is essentially 33% off retail ... and that's Target's $10 retail, not Toys R Us' $11 retail.

Let's compare to the much-loved Toys R Us "Buy 1, get 40% off another" promotion .... which is essentially 20% off two characters.

Only way to fairly compare the two is to hypothetically buy 6 Skylanders (least common multiple of 2 and 3):

Toys R Us: 20% off six Skylanders regularly-priced at $11 each == $52.80 (which is $8.80 each)
Target: 33% off six Skylanders regularly-priced at $10 each == $40.00 (which is $6.67 each)

So, would you rather pay $6.67 or $8.80? Tough choice.

EDIT: even with the Thanksgiving Day only "Buy 1, get 70% off another" promotion at Toys R Us (which is essentially 35% off two items), that STILL doesn't beat the Target promotion ...
35% off six Skylanders regularly-priced at $11 each == $42.90 (which is $7.15 each)

I'm not sure about the Rattle Shake or Fright Rider bags, but the sidekicks bags had coupons ($10 off Swap Force, $5 off Giants (maybe even SSA), and $1 off a figure) that expire on 11/30. So they'll still be good on Black Friday. I believe there were also bags that had just the coupons with no promo codes for sidekicks, Fright Riders or Rattle Shake.

It is a better deal, numbers wise - but you have to want three Skylanders. I could make the best deal in the world on them, Buy fifty Get fifty for free, and it would still not really be that great of a deal for most people. If you have to buy more than you want, you end up with a worse deal. It's like those old jokes where a spouse comes home and brags about how much money they "saved" because everything was 50% off - even though they wouldn't have bought the stuff had it not been on sale.

Personally, I had to pay full price for my Leg. Night Shift, because I already had everything I want - if I can't find two, then I'm certainly not going to want three.

Fair point, Defpally, although the "Buy 50, get 50 free" thing is straight hyperbole, and I think you know that.

I just brought this up in another thread, but it's once again relevant here: the folks that participate regularly on these forums here represent a small minority of consumers that purchase Skylanders. The sales of Swap Force starter packs during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to blow away the sales numbers from the past 4 weeks since the game's release date. Most people don't already have everything they want from the available Swap Force items, like you do (and I do). I too paid full price for Legendary Night Shift on Sunday, for the same reasons you stated. But the vast majority of consumers that are interested in Skylanders aren't avid get-it-the-first-day-it's-available types.

Regardless, the reason I posted in this thread is because someone said something stupid like, "Buy 2, Get 1 free isn't a great deal". Well, if you're interested in purchasing Skylanders toys, then that statement is false, and bordering on irresponsible. Surely you would agree, Defpally, that LOTS of young people (and many adults, too!) in American culture today really lack mathematical ability, and because of that, they'll make dumb statements and conclusions that are emotionally charged as a coping/cover device for their mathematical laziness or ineptitude. That pisses me off; so I call it out when I think I see it happening. Perhaps it's a pet peeve. Either way, the numbers don't lie .... the only times that the Toys R Us sale pricing is less expensive than Target's (and Best Buy, reportedly) B2G1-free promotion is if you want to purchase exactly 2 Skylanders, exactly 4 Skylanders, or exactly one Skylander that is a TRU-exclusive. Any other amount or combination and the Target deal "wins". Can't argue with math.

Yes, lots of people lack math and statistics capability, that was evident in the Frito-Lay thread. The reason I exaggerated in the Buy 50 Get 50 is because the less math inclined tend to understand better if you expand the scale. In other words, if I say Buy 2 Get 1 Free isn't great because you need to want three figures, people will be like "it's just one more figure, what's the big deal!" - but if you don't need that third figure, sometimes a worse deal mathematically is better. It is easier to understand when you explain it as fifty figures you don't need instead of one. People that don't understand math tend to "get" that.

Sam's Club is the perfect example, lots of people shop there and buy huge quantities of perishable items. It isn't a good deal unless you will use the larger volume (and I don't mean to "force" yourself to use them). You could leverage a larger buy if you can sell off the extras, like with those figures, but then you need to factor in the effort to sell them.

Good point there, Defpally.

Guess I'll just sum it up this way: if you plan to buy 3 Skylanders (or more than 4 Skylanders) at the same time in the near future, then the Target B2G1 free promotion is the best deal around.
