Ok, I've got enough gems to buy cinders house. However.... I have autumns house and so far I got 6 gems. Seems like slow turn around to me. The lairs are so expensive... Do the yield way more in the gem department? The headquarters are less then the houses, do they yield way less in terms of gems? I am cash rich, stone ok, energy poor, gem poor...so trying to make the best choice. Also, in the legendary house, will any specials go in there or solely legendaries?

I haven't noticed a difference in payouts between the Giant Houses / Alter Ego Huts / Sidekick Houses / Halls of Legend / Dragon's Lair (I just got the Dark Lair, so I don't know what it does).

The HQ are a much lower payout than the others.

Only Legendary Skylanders (Including Legendary Bouncer who is listed a GIANT) can go in the legendary houses.

The Halls of Legend are a huge bargin effectively turning wish stones into gems, energy and gold. I highly recommend getting them as soon as you have the stones to spare. Make sure you have 200 stones left after purchasing so you can wish for the new alternate that will come out in a few days. If you won't have 200 left, hold off buying the Hall until you do.

The Dragon Lair has a slightly higher gem range than regular houses. I think it might be 2-7 or 2-8 instead of 2-5 from the regular houses. So you can get a couple more gems. The big difference is that they only require 2 hours. If you play often, you can turn them over many times a day. If you only play twice a day, they are a huge waste. If you are gem poor, I would not recommend purchasing this. This is a luxary item.

The HQ are 4 hours and only reward 1 or 2 gems. Payouts of gold and energy are also very small. Even though it is cheaper, I also consider this a luxary item. I would save for a regular house over getting one of these.

Only you can decide how to spend your gems. I will add that once you have a significant number of houses and halls, you will find that you generate a significant amount of gems per day. They also add significantly to your gold per day and your energy per day. The energy per day helps you run more sanctuaries which in turn generates more gold per day.

I don't think you can ever go wrong buying a house. Once you have them, they cost nothing to activate, and give you gems, energy, gold, or experience. The payout is random, so there will be dry spells when you don't get many gems, but then there will also be times when you get gems multiple times in a row from the same house.

Lairs are too expensive for me at the moment, but I hope to have them someday.

I have one of each HQ, but, as MtLebo-Jason says, the payouts are much lower. I like having them to be complete, but I believe I'd have been better off if I'd saved the gems towards a Lair.

You're right when you say that the house don't have energy expenditure.

The problem is that it is not true that they give gems randomly, is supposed It should be in that way (that's what it says when you tap in the house's information), but it isn't. Really they give one gem in 7-8 times, and the amount of gems may be only 2-5 (5 gems rarely)
I think the best are the legendary houses (I've gotten all), because you get stones more easily than gems and legendary-house payments are like giants-houses or alter ego.

I think it might be good the Dragon house (I have not it because it's too expensive for me), I have gems saved, in case they put it in sale.

I've gotten up to 7 or 8 gems from the Dragon house. Other regular houses I've only seen 5 although I've seen some posts that say they have got 8 or 10 from them as well. I do think the Dragon house has a bigger range for potential gem payout because the first time you use it, it gives 6 gems where as all the other houses give 5. I'm expecting the dark house to be similar although I tend to agree with most people, these items are a luxury item when you have enough gems that you can buy these things. Don't expect to buy these things and get your gems back within a month. It's not like some of the companions where you can calculate exactly how many weeks it will take to recoup the gems. it's far too random to do any calculations like that.

If they're unlocking the giant houses in the near future as I think somebody mentioned, Hot Head's house is the one that seems to kick out more than 5 gems and up to 10. I've gotten 8 or 9 multiple times from his house.

Thank you,
Is good to know it, because I lack the theree houses of the principle: tree rex, hot head and swarm. I Weighed purchase of tree rex, but if hot head house gives more gives more gems, I'll think it.

I also get up to 8 gems from Hot Heads house. I haven't seen 9 or 10, but that would be welcome.

Dark lair looks cool. Kind of like the Spyro house we talked about before.

The dragon lair went on sale for 800 gems a few weeks after the release. I had given in and bought it when they were having a quest with a shrine reward, the next week it went on sale and I believe that is the only special house I've ever seen on sale.
I agree with others that Halls of legends are the best buy.

Actually, the regular houses are capable of at least eight gems. I managed eight gems from Hot Head's once, and in amazement, posted about it. Several other players then confirmed they'd also managed eight gems from a regular house. It's not frequent, but it can happen.

I don't know if the Dragon lair is capable of more than eight, or just has better odds of more gems. I'd hope like hell one of those is true, otherwise it's not a good deal at 1200 gems compared to a 350 gem house.

Edit: missed previous posts from Qanai and mariojedi that already referred to eight regular gems. Sorry.

But the Dragon Lair and new Dark House only take 2 hours to complete while the Houses take 6. At 800, the Drago Lair is probably worth it?

Honestly, I can't argue in favor for them, at 1200, they are just too expensive.

At six hours intervals, I can check in up to four times a day. If I was to check in more frequently than that, I'd have no defence against an accusation of not having a life. ;-)

I like th HQs for new skylanders as you can send a level 1 on a four hour mission for no energy and instantly level up without having to bother with all those 1 minute missions.

Yeah, but you can level up a new skylander with a couple chests too and that takes only 10 minutes a pop.
