I've had Quilladin, Riolu and Pikachu since before the first badge. I focused on those guys for training before the first gym. So they were my main go to ones during those fights and the gym battle. I got Charmander afterwards from the professor, and I spent a lot of time hunting down a male Abra since he appears so rarely. So I basically kicked the crap out of anything that moved until I got him, which got a good number of levels onto the ones I had. Froakie is a trade I just got tonight, so he levels up with little effort needed. The Exp Share helped a lot, since I didn't realize I had it on. I thought it was a hold item like in the past and it took a disappointing amount of time to figure out how Pokemon were getting EXP without ever being used. Abra I just had to grind any fights I could after I turned off EXP Share to evolve him and teach him something beyond teleport. I've always been a slow Pokemon player who kicks the crap out of anything that moves, so I usually have well leveled teams before I get to the next gym.

I put on my Pokemon Black game. I beat the story, but never got around to beating the E4 for real in this game. Keep in mind I don't do competitive stuff outside of a battle every so often with a friend, so moves and Pokemon I suppose may not be what many others would do.
