Keiji Inafune, the reknowned creator of Megaman, has begun conceptualising a new game, and has started a Kickstarter fund for it.
The game itself is essentially the result of a bunch of things Inafune has always wanted to do with the Megaman series, but never could, due to Capcom repeatedly turning down his Megaman projects. Right now, Keiji Inafune does not hold the rights to the Megaman franchise, so he cannot make Megaman games.
He can, however, make a spiritual successor. And that's exactly what he is doing with Mighty No.9.
The game is a Megaman game in everything but name, right down to the plot being almost idenitical to the plot of the original Megaman game. The characters are also based off of Megaman characters, with clear parallels for Megaman, Roll, and more.
The gameplay is an evolution of the classic Megaman formula - run, jump, and shoot your way through side scrolling levels. There are six levels (as of now - how much content this game has is entirely dependent on funding, which I will get to in a second) for you to choose from, and you can play them in any order you want. Each level has a boss at the end, and you will gain a new ability from bosses when you defeat them.
So, you know how it's basically a Megaman game. But what new things does the game bring to the table?
Well, keep in mind that this project has only just begun, and is still in conceptual stages, so not much is set in stone. But two key game changing mechanics are planned:
-The powers you gain from bosses are not just new weapons - they are transformations. One example shown in the concept art depicts Beck (the player character) transforming into a giant hammer. Another depicts him turning into a tank.
-Not only can you gain the powers of bosses, but you can also exploit normal enemies and use them to your advantage. Beck can absorb "Xel" (pronounced as "cell") energy from enemies, which can be used to fuel different kinds of temporary power ups, such as speed increases, or protective shields.
As well as the game being made in the spirit of Megaman, Inafune is working with many talented creators who have previously worked with him on Megaman games.
The game is in development for PC (with gamepad support, and DRM-free distribution), and is intended to be finished in time for Spring 2015.
The goal of 900,000USD has already been reached - however, with further funding, there will be more content added to the game, and it will be released on other platforms, including Mac, Linux, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
Spread the word about this if you have the time.
