1: Bronies are any fans of MLP, boy or girl, unless you yourself don't want to be under that name. So unless you don't want to be called a brony and simply be called a fan of the show, you're a brony.

2: The comics are a lot darker, but I haven't read all of them so I don't know if there's any blood! If you're interested in a more dark take on the show, the comics are worth reading! Well, at least judging from the Luna comic arc.

Official, published by IDW. They've very good - some people say it's the right direction for the series to have gone in after season 2.

I don't own the comics, but are they sort of going on an alternate timeline than the actual TV show? <.<

Not really, I think the idea is that they're currently set between season 2 and 3. However, when/if they introduce Alicorn Twilight into the comics then it'll be assumed they'll take place after season 3 from that point onward.

Though it's debatable whether they're canon or not in the first place.

They should really use the canon from the show to their advantage - especially Discord returning. De Lancie probably costs them the most per episode than any other VA, so having Discord as a character in the comics without the need to pay De Lancie for a voice role is a perfect idea.

I always thought they were fan made.
I hope I'm not missing out much.

Well, then the comics would be out of order - since the first arc takes place after season 2. Maybe she just turned back to her original design because she was weak - what with the Nightmare Forces at full power again and everything - and then near the end when she regain's her strength, she goes back to flowing-mane design.

...Actually, if this would be the case, what implications would that have for Celestia? And the other Alicorns? If their flowing manes come from being at full power (or... Something similar) then what about Cadence and Twilight who don't have flowing manes and Celestia who we only see with a flowing mane?

...Or maybe I'm just over thinking this.

That's just Pinkie Pie and her antics. Fluttershy and the mayor were legitimately scared (even though Fluttershy doesn't really count since she's scared of Nightmare Night altogether), and even Applejack was startled by Luna. Why would all of the ponies be so scared of someone that they had witnessed help save their town?

I don't like the micro series comics that much. I stopped getting them after Fluttershy. I just read them online now and if I like one I'll buy it.
I also missed out the Big Mac arc as I read them online and didn't find them interesting enough to buy hard copies. I am getting the Cadance and Shining issues though.

I've only read the Celestia micro series comic, not really interested in the others.
