A minute ago I was bored, then it hit me. As I was eyeballing the Wakapro's darkSpyro RPG-topic, my mind came alive. I wanted to make a fun darkSpyro project of my own.
Dwarf Fortress, a game few know of and even fewer know how to play. a "part roguelike, part city-building freeware video game set in a procedurally generated high fantasy universe in which the player takes control of a group of dwarves and attempts to construct a successful and wealthy subterranean fortress in a mountain."
This game will serve as the basis of my project.
I will create a "DarkSpyro Fortress", from which users can claim individual dwarves as their own "avatars" in this randomly generated fantasy world, and see if I can make it thrive.
I will also be looking for crazy/fun suggestions for ways to developing our fortress.
I will be updating you on the progress of the dwarves and the fortress itself with screencaps and descriptions of the hilarity that is bound to ensue in this game.
The freshly generated world of "Koloborid Acath", awaits.

In Drawf Fortress, you always embark on a new area with seven dwarves and a wagon full of supplies/animals you can purchase yourself. You can also oufit the starting dwarves and choose their professions and skills with great amount of detail.
In time, immigrants will also arrive to the fortress. These immigrants and their professions will be completely randomized. They might be nobles of great renown that actually demand things from the player, or they might be no-good hobo-dwarves that do nothing but eat your food and reek of bad hygiene. That said, what also makes this game fun is that individual dwarves also posess free will. I can't directly control them, only assign tasks for them to work on. Dwarves might fall into the depths of alcoholism, throw tantrums, have kids, get posessed, chatter idly, refuse to do their jobs, kill themselves due to depression, and more. There are so many ways this fortress could come crashing down in flames, but that's exactly why it's so much fun. |

I have chosen the location for our new fortress. A patch of temperate savanna in the middle of the largest continent on the world map. Untamed wilds with moderate vegetation and some trees.
The dwarves that I need to get things started include: 1. A miner/mason -Kitty 2. A woodcutter/carpenter -SPARXisAWESOME 3. A craftsdwarf/blacksmith (The leader of the expedition) -Dark52 4. A fisherdwarf/hunter -DragonCamo 5. A doctor -thumper 6. A farmer/brewer -Seiki 7. A dwarf with military training. (Our first guardsman) -slambam104 Anybody want to claim a dwarf? |

Sure thing. I'll be starting the fortress as soon as I've prepared all the supplies and outfitted the dwarves for their inescapable and unavoidable doom.

Just pick a dwarf. There's still a miner/mason, a doctor and a guardsdwarf available. More will come in time, but these will be the starting dwarves that lay the foundation for the fortress. |

Sorry to say that there aren't any wizards in this game. I think they'd make a great addition, but maintaining any viable industry is hard enough already. |

Ok now, all systems are go.
The dwarves mentioned above will shortly embark on their journey to "The Hill of Strength", where they will start building the settlement of "Umommamgoz" (=Darkdragon). The supplies I took with them are: (1) Copper pickaxe (1) Copper battle axe (1) Iron anvil (40 units) Dwarven ale (43 units) Dwarven wine (20 units) Cave fish (20 units) Yak meat (15 units) Plump helmet spawn (=mushrooms spawns for farming) (5 units) Pig tail seeds (=wine-like plant dwarves make cloth from) (5 balls) Pig tail fiber thread (for stitching wounds) (5 rolls) Pig tail fiber cloth (for dressing wounds) (3) Pig tail fiber bags (3) Pig tail fiber ropes (3) Maple buckets (3) Maple splints (for injuries) (3) Maple crutches (ditto) (10 bars) Copper (1) Copper shortsword (for the guard) (1) Copper breastplate (ditto) (10) Willow logs (2) Cats (one male, one female) (1) Female dog (1) Male war dog (3) Hen (1) Rooster Umommamgoz strike the earth! The first few things I must build to ensure the survival of the dwarves include: - A stockpile for all the crap they took with them - A brewery ( "ugh no boose make dwarf go crazy!") - Farm plots (No food = dwarf is kill) - A ramshackle militia (animals are everywhere, and they all want us dead) - A henhouse (The chickens are dead if I don't wall them in somewhere) - A hospital - Beds (Dwarves will sleep on the floor if no beds are available, but if they do that for a year or so, they'll go crazy) - A well (can't treat injuries with alcohol, no matter how fun it sounds) And that's about it for the starters. You are now my dwarves, and I will hear you out when it comes to ideas on how to build our fortress. If you have any, please share them on this topic. |

The first twist in the story has already taken place. Turns out that even though "Dark52" is the most experienced dwarf around, the leader of the expedition was the carpenter. In other words, SPARXisAWESOME will be the one responsible for trade negotiations for his people.
Ah well, that's the thing with random, you can never be sure. http://i1257.photobucket.com/a...zps82177947.png Anyway, here's the first glimpse of your new dwarven home. It's white all around because there's still snow on the ground and you can't see the plants etc. This is only a tiny fraction of the whole area though, there seems to be some mountain cliffs to the west. We will migrate there and start digging. (the brown thing in the middle of the dwarves is the supply wagon) |

Spring has come to Umommamgoz.
The dwarves have started digging rough pathways and rooms for stockpiles in the mountain. So far, nobody has been hurt. The only wild animals roaming about are a pack of wild mountain goats. Everything seems peaceful for now. While carving out a room for a hospital, the miner (Kitty) struck agate. We can cut and set these cheap gemstones into stone crafts to raise their value and decorate the fortress. |

The first screencap of Umommamgoz is here.
http://i1257.photobucket.com/a...zpsad82a2a8.png As you can see, the snow has already melt away. The cliffs to the west provided plenty of space for carving out the initial stockpiles, and from here I will start mining down. Due to lack of hostile wildlife, the militia is yet to be formed. Our idle guardsdwarf (slambam104) helps other dwarves by hauling supplies. |

I WILL DIG A TUNNEL ALL THE WAY TO HELL AND SEND YOU WORK THERE Fun fact: You can actually dig your way into hell in this game. Edit: The henhouse finally got finished, and the second stockpile is now fully mined. The hospital has been finished as well, so we might as well turn our eyes towards keeping our dwarves fed. Our meat, fish and alcohol reserves are already dwindling, but the huge amounts of eggs laid by the three chickens will keep the seven dwarves fed for as long as we need. I've started to mine caverns in the soil layer to grow mushrooms. We might as well use those to brew more booze now as we don't need more food. After the booze problem is solved we'll go to planning how to defend Umommamgoz. When those basic needs are taken care of in some way, it's time to make our fortress a bit more comfortable for the average dwarf. |

DANGER APPROACHES UMOMMAMGOZ!
As I predicted, a group of ferocious giant badgers have taken it upon themselves to start harassing lone dwarves and animals. slambam104, Umommamgoz's finest warrior, equips his copper short sword, copper breastplate and his oaken shield, and starts partolling the outskirts of the fortress. A few badgers probably don't seem like a huge danger to you, but they can easily maim a lone, unarmed dwarf. That's why we need to fend them off. Good thing I brought that war dog with me. |

Will do. Update: Autumn, Year 126 of Koloborid Acath. Approximately six months from the starting date. -The guardsmen of Umommagoz now include three dwarves. The two otherwise useless migrants were quickly drafted and now patrol the outskirts of the fortress. -The food/alcohol problem has been solved, and a steady supply of booze flows through the fortress, keeping the dwarves happy. -Various workshops were constructed inside the mountain, enabling the dwarves to cut gems and smith weapons and armor. -The construction of the grand dining hall began one level below the stockpile, and is currently unfinished. -A great wall was erected around the fortress entrance to keep the wandering wildlife away. from the working dwarves. -More migrants arrived. The population of the fortress now reaches 13 dwarves. The arrivals include: 1. A talented fisherdwarf. 2. An overall proficient fighter, who specialises in using warhammers. (it goes without saying that he'll be drafted when we have the correct equipment) 3. A hobo whose only ability is to adequatly walk with a crutch. (We need an another miner, so I'll get him a pick and get him digging) |
