When exactly is this happening? I still haven't seen any in-game notices. I also presume you get to keep the fans you've bought?

I still haven't seen the alert but I read about the #1 fans going to join swap force on another thread. I'm hoping the swap force crew joins lost islands and they don't create a new app that I have to start all over with. I don't mind building up, I just don't want to start all over collecting gems.

I saw the alert and they say the fans are leaving to join swapforce. At least they only cost 12 gems atm if you don't own them already.

Yep. I've gone ahead and purchased all fans as well as Gigantus. He especially seems like a no brainier given how many giants he bonuses.
