Ownership question. The transition from giants to swap force? [CLOSED]

I am wondering how in game ownership works with different games.
Lets say I have swap force (just for this example not for real yet) and Giants
Let"s say I have Gnarly Tree Rex already owned on my Giants file.

If I want the ownership on swap force would I have to manually pick "claim ownership "
or can I just place GTR on and he will be owned by my swap force file?

Manually claim ownership in Swap Force. I assume this based on how you have to do Series 1 figures in Giants.

It'd be nice if they let the new game access your save file in the old game (if you have them on the same system, of course), so that you can take ownership of everything without having to put the figure on the portal and access the menu to take ownership... for all 150 figures you have at this point.

This would be nice. Not sure how much of ownership is controlled in the file or the chip in the base and how they work together to determine who has ownership. If they can some how make it so that Ownership is given to each version of Skylanders (Spyro/Giants/Swap) game so that it will give out ownership to various versions of the game. Sound complicated and not even sure if it is possible or if Activision cares to spend $$$ on developing code to do this. We will just have to wait and see when Swap Force comes out. Based on Giants I say it will be the same way.

Was their ever a downside to claiming ownership of a character? All ownership did was unlock stuff within the game? I ask because my nephew and I have borrowed characters from friends to unlock extra heroic challenges and to see if we liked the character.

Allocades and some people like knowing their entire collection this way

No technical downside. Keep in mind that "guest" skylanders show up greyed out in Giants, to let you know at one time he was used, but wasn't yours.

RIP GhostRoaster. He's reanimated as TakeYourLemons but occasionally is resurrected from the beyond when needed.

The only downside would be spending time to take ownership. If you have every character fro SSA and Giants, this could get tedious, you may even ask yourself WHY!!! Activision could make it easier if they choose too.

I remember it taking 2+ hours with my Giants collection...I'm pretty sure we're going to need 4+ hours with Swap Force lol.

I disagree on that last part... Pretty sure the game keeps no record whatsoever of what Guest figures were used, The characters who have never been used in any way - Boomer and Wham-Shell come to mind - seem to look the exact same kind of grey as ones which have been guests. There IS a possibility it might do something like this while a guest is on the portal, though. Like how you can use a guest Skylander to do their own Heroic Challenge, even if you don't have it truly unlocked.

And I concur, I haven't been able to detect a single downside. My nephews have a few figures I don't, I took ownership of them all in SSA (then Giants) to unlock Heroic Challenges (in Giants this was before I realized the SSA figures don't unlock HC's in Giants). I then retook ownership in their SSA, for as many as I could manage while they were itching to actually play, just in case it made a difference, but it still hasn't.
