Hi all--I was at Gamestop today with my son. Awhile ago I had heard there was an upcoming Pokemon game coming that would be in the style of Skylanders. Well today, they were taking preorders. Apparently it's $20..then, you there are going to be like 600 characters (cant remember exactly how many) But you can't buy each character. You buy a Pokeball that will have a random character inside.
Are any people into Pokemon? Do you think this game will be able to compete with Skylanders?

That is "Pokemon Rumble U" and it is coming out August 29th as an eShop download for $18.
http://www.examiner.com/articl...okemon-rumble-u Bulbapedia has some stuff about it also... http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden....9mon_Scramble_U But the figures are different in that they are NFC based and not RFID based. I am not sure that stuff will get saved to them.. Most likely not. It will get saved in the game itself, but probably specific to the SN of the figure you own. -VM

Hmmm okay---so basically it isn't as sophisticated as RFID/Skylanders. I see....Thanks Matteomax
I just think the "random" thing is nuts. Especially with many hundreds of figures. Now, I know they are coming in waves but geez--Im not buying over and over and over to get my son the 30 or so he would like in total. I hope it is not a big hit....because I don't want my kiddo to be into Skylanders. Disney, Pokemon...ARGH! that'll be way too much He is excited about Disney but way more excited about Skylanders. But I have heard a lot of talking about Disney and that they game will have a lot to it. Well, Hopefully Swap force stays on top.

It's not quite like Skylanders as the figures aren't needed for the game, and are only used optionally for special Pokemon. You can even get the Pokemon they provide normally in the game.
The figures currently out in Japan: Series 1: Bulbasaur Pikachu Torchic Piplup Lucario Victini Shiny Pikachu (Secret, I think rarer figure) Series 2: Eevee Mewtwo Croagunk Zoroark Litwick Genesect Shiny Eevee (Secret Figure) Series 3: Mew Celebi Jirachi Deoxys Darkrai Shaymin Shiny Genesect (Secret Figure) Promo: Pikachu (Purachse bonus from Pokemon Centers) Lucario (Pokemon Smash bonus, limit 200) Blaze Genesect* Douse Genesect* Shock Genesect* Chill Genesect* Shiny Genesect* Black Kyurem (Special Pokemon Show Vending Machine) White Kyurem (Special Pokemon Show Vending Machine) *Pokemon Smash promo. These are a set, limit of 100 sets. I intend to try for many of them, even though I don't intend to buy the game. (Don't have a Wii U)

This actually sounds quite to my liking - I may have to try this out- I'm actually selling MOST of my skylanders and I like Pokémon- Yes I believe this game can most likely toast Skylanders as the fan-base for this franchise completely outweighs the skylanders fanbase- its a sad truth.

As I said just said above, the figures are not required. They are completely optional. I do not see this being any competition for Skylanders as one could just get the game. If they required use of figures in a way like Skylanders or Disney Infinty do, then there'd be some competition. Otherwise this is just a game, with the ability to have special bonus characters added in.

The game will do well, because the series does well. Pokemon Rumble is successful and popular if I'm not mistaken. I'll be getting it for sure, as well as the figures (although as stated the figures aren't required).

With how only a handful of Pokemon are available as figurines in Japan where they got a head start, and how many are universally popular instead of a random batch, it seems extremely unlikely for them to make every Pokemon/or in the lifetime on this game.
I imported the Eevee (I have been waiting years for Pokemon Ranch-style figurines!), it's surprisingly/adorably small. Here it is next to a normal s1 Spyro most of you probably have. Sorry for the poor unnatural lighting.

Isn't the Pokemon game basically just an arena to battle your monsters with? No story or anything? I understand the huge fan base with Pokemon but I would expect the shallow game play to turn many people off. Hasn't Nintendo already had games like this on the N64 and 3DS? Minus the figures of course.

I think the new storyline is just that the 5 Pokemon or whatever have been lost and they're fighting their way back to the Pokemon Center store or whatever.
Thankfully the Pokemon figures are cheaper and there's not as many, but the random thing is a bit of a downer although it'll be fun to go and buy them like that. I've been wanting them to make blind packaged Pokemon toys for a while now so this is a nice alternative. I played the first one and for what it's worth; it was a ton of fun. And I've been playing since Yellow haha. I didn't get a chance to play the second one but the new one looks like it'll be good and I'm always happy to have more games on the Wii U.

No, not really. I am huge PokeFan, and each game is different! Despite most people saying this, I believe that the games have great stories! Like.... Gen 1- (Not sure, haven't played Yellow in forever) Gen 2- Never liked GSC so I havent played the games Gen 3- Best Pokemon year imo, the game is super fun, and it follows the path of stopping Team Magma/Aqua and capturing Rayquaza and just. UGH. being so perfect. Gen 4- Really good Story imo! the whole Team Galactic idea really caught my attention because I love astronomy. Gen 5- I loved them again >.< Despite contrary belief, each game is not just: - Get Starter Pokemon - Get Badges - Beat Elite Four - Put away for life No, it is soooo much more than this! It is more like: - Get Starter Pokemon - Catch other Pokemon - Bond with your pokemon while Training with them - Get Badges (And you don't just go town to town, ther is almost always a story that entails in between them) - Work hard to defeat the Evil Team - Journey your way all through the region - Challenge E4 - Most likely fail to beat them and try again - Defeat E4 - Battle Champion - Win - New town's and Pokemon open up! - The E4 and Champion get stronger! And that is just a brief summary! So yeah, this is the reason it has such a large fanbase, plus, each game is around 39.99 on release date of X/Y, and you pay that much to get 700+ Pokemon with 100+ being new ones and several others gaining new abilities and such. Versus Skylanders: Pay 69.99 (?) for three characters, then pay 10 for each character after that. It really isn't even worth it. (If you think about, Skylanders are kinda like Cigarettes, you pay 10 bucks for them, and then you're addicted and just want more.)

Umm... I'm not sure you understand what you quoted. I think TheGooch was referring to the Rumble games, rather than Pokemon as a whole in that post. And a thing to remember with Rumble U, it seems there won't be figures of EVERY Pokemon, just a few... Plus, the game, being a download title, will be cheaper than a full retail title. And yes, the figures aren't needed. All they do is unlock a Pokemon to use in the game, similar to the passwords in the previous game. And yes, there is a bit of a story in the game. Not sure how deep it will end up being, but a story does exist. |

Joerox123, Skylanders comes with so much more than just 3 figures. It comes with 3 figures, a game, a poster, stickers, codes, cards, and lastly the portal. Then you pay around £6-8 for a regular fig, £14.99 for a giant. With Pokemon you just get a game along with some easy-to-catch-and-find creatures. Skylanders kinda offers you more stuff, as you can get a decent priced Adventure Pack, along with a Skylander and a magic item, along with an exclusive place. Do you do that with Pokemon? Not really.

1. Pokemon are NOT all easy to find, you have tons of routes to explore with new pokemon every route. 2. lol at offers more stuff. One character for 10.00 < 649 for only 39.99. yeahhhhhhhhhhh. And each is different as listed below. 3. "Magic Item" More like: item that hardly works for a few seconds and you cant use it until the next level. And the exclusive place? Beating the Champion unlocks loads of new areas. 4. Yes you do. Do not **** with my pokemon, my claws will come out. I am actually a really nice person and I am laid-back, but if someone insults my Pokemon: • Catch Rates • Effort Values •**Individual Values • Fossil Pokemon •**Legendary Pokemon • Roaming Pokemon • Shadow Pokemon • Starter Pokemon • Pokemon Variants • Version Mascots • Baby Pokemon Plus 15 other articles I found but didn't want to clog up this topic with. 55+ Games. And, you can not deny this: Pokemon: Gotta catch em' all! Skylanders: Gotta collect em' all! Really? Skylanders is a more expensive rip-off of pokemon. And yes, I have played both and most of the characters in Skylanders, and ahve played every gen of pokemon.

Right, joerox, I'm sorry, but you are SERIOUSLY misinterpreting what is said. That said, Fan of Skylands isn't right either.
You can't compare a £50-ish initial investment for "3 figures, a game, a poster, stickers, codes, cards, and lastly the portal" to a £35-ish TOTAL investment for a full game (Sorry, I don't count the Skylanders Starter Pack as a full game, due to what seems like just a partial game.). Yes, Pokemon you have your limitation of what pokemon are in each version, but each individual creature you want comes to a grand total of nothing to trade from someone else. HOWEVER, the topic in question is talking about Pokemon RUMBLE U. Not a main Pokemon game. Yet, the point still stands (somewhat). £50-ish initial investment for Skylanders(three playable characters), plus "optional" figures for £8-15 and extra levels for £20. £15-ish initial investment for Pokemon Rumble U(649 playable characters), plus optional figures for maybe less than £5 each. The only thing with the Skylanders figures is the forwards compatibility. But then, Rumble U is a single, standalone game. Skylanders is an ongoing series. Plus, Pokemon Rumble U actually has a reason to play through older levels. Skylanders, not so much. Pokemon Rumble U, supports up to four (local) players. Skylanders, 2. If we keep making these lame comparisons, rather than just saying "Yeah, I like this, I wanna buy it" or just steering far from the topic then we get nowhere. As I said before, I like the look of Rumble U. I'm more than happy to buy the game and all of the figures because of how much I like the Pokemon characters, rather than Skylanders where I only picked up eight figures per game. Simply because I dislike most of the Skylanders. As for what is a rip off of what, neither is a rip off of each other. Both are their own singular games. And competing? Can't say that. Both are different games. Pokemon might come out best, due to the HUGE fanbase, the fact that Skylanders only recently was released in Japan, the price, the not necessary fact of the figures. Also, do you guys know how irresistible gacha machines are? Everytime I go to a store with one, I have to stand in front of it for a long while, deciding whether to try my luck or not. It was a good thing that the Pokemon one was out of order the other day. |

I counted the Pokemon Rumble U figures at Serebii. At least the ones that are most likely to get a US release. That means no Pokemon Smash variants and no Pokemon that look exactly like normal figures (like the Punchy Pikachu). That gives us 21 figures, so I think more will be released.

From the UK's early release today, we should be getting all 18 of the regular figures. (Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Torchic, Piplup, Lucario, Victini, Eevee, Mewtwo, Croagunk, Zoroark, Litwick, Genesect, Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Darkari, Shaymin) and then Shiny versions of Pikachu, Gensect and Eevee. I don't believe we'll get the Red Genesect movie guys over here until the movie actually comes out (it'd be cool if they brought the movie to theaters again and handed those out but ehh..not gonna hold my breath)
The BW Kyurems are included in special edition versions of the game with a poster, a figured and then either B/W Kyruem. (and the download code). I'd imagine we'll get those too in the US, so 23 total figures.
