Has anyone tried to put one on an american portal and game as i am interested in knowing if they remade the game to register different serials for the characters and basically mix them up to prevent international issues with scalpers on the rise.

No. Short answer. All that's on the figures is ID#'s. When you place the figure on the portal, the game looks those numbers up in its databases. So it reads that this is figure #413, looks that up, that's Boomer, so write "Boomer" and draw Boomer. Look up Boomer in the sound files, cross-check that with the region set on the console. Oh, you're in North America, pick the English sound clips for Boomer. He's wearing Hat #42, that's the Knight's Helm, okay, put that on his head. Upgrades 1, 2 and 4 are purchased, draw the differences and unlock those attacks/abilities. Etc. etc. etc. So, no, what name appears is determined by the game. If your game is in English, the name will appear in English. And yes, I said it picks the language based on your location, not your language. Someone on here reported that he's in Sweden (I think) but with his console set to English, and Skylanders switches to Swedish anyways, not the English of his console. Didn't we cover this in this thread already? Quote: djdatatec
Ummmmm, what? How could they recode games we already own? And what do you think the serial numbers have to do with anything in the game, or to stop scalpers?

I'm only interested in getting the characters that I have trouble locating in English due to rarity and scalpers. Hopefully Activision listens to the fans and reissues older sets, though with the sudden influx of older sets in mint condition I suspect that it's already happening...

No, the point is to get the things we DON'T already own and can't find locally except by resellers charging an arm and a leg, LOL! For example, I don't have a Boomer or a Wham Shell from SSA, so I might contemplate getting them from Japan, and just live with the fact that the card and sticker are in Japanese. Since they're not that important to me, this is less than a speed bump about this, and could make for a nice talking point.

Sparcrux--to be honest, my interest was to collect them--just to collect them--because it's a neat thing to add to our collection. So, what you originally thought--was correct in regards to me. Lol
Now I'm not sure we will even do this because of logistics, and it appears that We weren't almost "done" with giants because they are adding more variants etc. But--I just thougt I'd "admit" I was thinking about collecting "just" for the sake of collecting and not to fill in missing items in our collection.

Well, of course I know there are people who will want a full set of Japanese figures, LOL! Due to the 100s of dollars that would mean, I would THINK most will decide like Shelly, to be satisfied with just North America. I suspect most people from North America who order from Japan will be the ones just trying to get the guys they can't find locally.
(I figure 32 characters times $10 per means $320 for the full set in the store, so the Japanese collection would be probably at least $500)

Okay, this will be a quick[not really] rundown for all of ya; for importing from Amazon JP I usually use: Tenso.com
What they do is give you their warehouse address, and all you do is login to Amazon and order as normal, only using their address, and that's it! Once the item gets to them you will receive an email and have to pay for a their service fee, which starts at 490yen per package PLUS shipping costs; a detailed breakdown can be found HERE. Aside from holding the item for you, they also charge extra to "consolidate" packages for you [they will pack multiple items in multiple packages into one big package for you; this helps save on shipping costs]. The only downside is that they only ship with EMS, which is a fast, tracked and expensive shipping option. I've used their service a few times and never had problems, they'll even send you an email before your storage time lapses, I had forgotten I bought an item once so that was good Take a look around their FAQ and Usage Guide, there is a lot of detailed information about all the services they offer BUT I choose not to use them for any other services like buying from online shops because their fees are very high. For that I use FromJapan! [I would really appreciate if you guys could use my referral link, they're a new site and need to spread the word!] They are one of the best places to use in order to bid on items within Yahoo Japan auctions; essentially the ebay of Japan. There are many other bidding sites that charge much higher fees per auction than FJ does, as far as I know they are the cheapest! Their fees start at 200yen +5% +5% per auction; it's a litle confusing to explain, but their Commissions page shows a detailed breakdown of how it works[and what to expect when importing; there are a LOT of fees to take in!] They also have AMAZING service, you get email updates for items as they arrive, when your payments are due, when items are shipped out, and have quick response times when you need help, just be aware of the JP time zone. I bought a huge item that could only be sent by Fedex and they gave me an amazing deal on the shipping [I guess they get business discounts, but still, that thing should have costed 4 digits to ship and I got it for MUCH cheaper]. Now, here's the thing about using this site; in order to be able to place a bid, you need to deposit money to the site first. That way, incase you forget to pay, the payment can be deducted from your deposit automatically, no problem! It also keeps you from having to figure out conversion rates because you pay in yen. You can use Paypal, a credit card, or other options to make your deposit. Each step of the buying process will give you a thorough breakdown of fee costs, a shipping estimator for shipping within Japan when bidding and when prepping items to be sent to you, auction pages are translated and the seller's feedback is displayed for you, the interface is easy to use and yea, it's great. I've used a lot of proxy/bidder/bypass services because I import stuff from Japan pretty often [I'm a collector of Digimon and Shin Megami Tensei merchandise~] and this is one of the best I've found. You can see more info on how to shop with them in their Usage Guide, or go through a bunch of useful links on the Site Map. They're also great for buying from online stores that only ship within Japan, ex. Toys R Us JP. Go HERE when logged in, paste the URL of the specific item you want, the item name, how many you want and if needed you can even upload an image of it. They're quick to reply, and even do pre-orders! I pre-ordered a special edition set of digimon TCG that was limited to one webshop in all of Japan...and they placed it and got it sent to me no problem [it was even double-boxed when it arrived!] *As always, imported goods can incur additional fees/customs in your country, but I don't recall having any issues with these services very often. Hope this helps! :3 |

Thanks for the info! This is the first I've seen of anybody giving any kind of real tips. And I REALLY feel like I've heard the name "Tenso" before (assuming my mind isn't confusing it with Tesco in the UK), so that's comforting.
Example numbers would be nice, though... Like the original price and what the final total ended up being.

Some of the example/info pages show demo purchases and go through the whole process. I actually haven't bought much lately because I'm broke right now ^-^; I posted this on another forum, my FJ "Charge 2" page with the breakdown [note that I bought a slot machine; it's big and heavy as you can see in the stats, hence the shipping cost! In normal cases you can choose which type of shipping option, ex. SAL, Airmail, EMS, etc. you want]. And yes, you can specify the value of your item(s) with all shipping methods, and you can request the parcel to be sent as a gift for all shipping types except Fedex, so if you want to dodge import fees... Sorry I don't have part 1's full breakdown, it's kinda there at the top though, the final bid price and service charge. Hope this somewhat helps ^-^; |

I got a quote back from the White Rabbit website that has been talked about on here. Darklight Crypt Adventure Pack sent to NY would cost $53.98. That is half the price that it is going for on Ebay for the American version. Half the price plus cool Japanese packaging. How can you can go wrong with that? Update: same price quoted on the Boomer triple pack. Amazing!
Edit: Thinking about this a little more it makes me kind of sad. I bought a used Ghost Roaster off Ebay for $48 only to have it come with a missing front horn. I spent another $22 on the Darklight Crypt DLC by itself and just recently got the Time Twister and Healing Elixir pair for $6. I thought I was doing good since I made it under the $100 mark for a complete (although hornless) set. Ahhh well, we live and learn I suppose.

Since nobody has said anything... About that shipping-from-Japan example, I'm a little unnerved by it... No conversion required, an item whose original price is 4,800 Yen after everything was 19,388 Yen, all said and done... That's a bit more than TRIPLE the purchase price, approaching quadruple, meaning that's over 200% of fees and S&H and such!
Obviously a smaller item like a Skylander will be less, especially seeing how light they are, but for comparison that means a $10 Skylander having $20 in shipping and handling, making the final price $30! From resellers is one thing, but new from store?

I bought some from Toys R Us Japan and had a reshipper send them to me and my total shipping and usage fee was about $40. It took about 3 days for me to receive them. Got them this morning. So if I average the shipping costs over all of the items, I paid about $37 for my Darklight Crypt.
