We open everything. If we were ever to get a really rare one, maybe we would keep it in the package, but I doubt that would sit well with my 4 year old son. Lol.

Indeed, I have nearly 8 and nearly 4 year old boys and if I were to suggest keeping a Skylander boxed, I think their head would explode.
They often just sit and play with the figures when the game isn't on so I doubt a boxed collection would have the same effect. |

We have one of each open. Including variants but not chase variants.
Then we ha e most of the chase variants unopened. That being said...if my son wanted to open one or however many--id say yes. The point of it all is fun and I'd never want to do a "look at this toy you love" and then take it away and say, "but you can't have it" So we don't have rules written in stone-- But so far--one open and one unopened. (Excluding chase variants) I'd love to be hunting and to see the look on my sons face when he found a chase figure--

Now i'm tempted to open my giants collection yet again.. But maybe not until i create a decent space and display them appropriately... The least i want is a messy skylanders figure.. I even have my dark light crypt pack open ... I think i will open all my ssa now... Giants still thiiiiiinking...

I just open everyone I get, though, that's not saying much, because I only have 42, not including the 12 magic items. But, this year, I'm going to just get every figure I can find, probably keep the rare chase variants in their packaging, maybe even play as them, just, still in their packaging.

I've got all my figures open. Normals, Giants, Lightcore, Store Exclusives, etc. If I were to find a Gold or another chase variant I'd keep it sealed. The way I justified opening the store exclusives is that they may be variants, but they're MASS PRODUCED variants.

Standard figures open, variants in boxes.
Might change that soon though - for some reason I can't put my finger on, it's just less fun playing with them in boxes. |

The only character I left in the box is the E3 Hot Dog.
Everything else is open. My kids play with the Skylanders as action figures for non-video-game imaginative play just as often as they actually play the Skylanders video games.

My entire collection is opened. My little sister beat Giants with my figures and then comes down the stairs daily to ask if she can play with them in whatever world her imagination takes her. I'd much rather her do that then sit in front of the tv for hours doing the same thing over and over again.

There's really no point in keeping these in-package, unless you're planning on selling them in the near future. There isn't any long term value in things like this, so you might as well just enjoy them.

Actually, it's quite likely to be worth something in about 25-30 years, when the kids who are obsessed now are adults with money who want to recapture their youth. Just like GI Joe, TMNT, Starwars and Transformers can fetch a good price now. |

I have to agree with the last statement, just look at the 20th anniversary of power ranger items at tru.com. People are spending $60 on legacy morphers and $80 on megazords and these are not for kids, but for adults that were kids when it aired. These are new items, the old items still sell well. heck, check SDCC there going to be a 24k gold legacy morpher of the green and white ranger it's selling for $200 there and on eBay above $300. Stuff from the mid 90's or late 80's sells on eBay pretty well as does the newer recreation of said items. I personally wish I had things from my childhood to share with my son, like my tmnt or power rangers. All i know is I have a sealed set of skylanders from ssa and giants which I will keep on my wall till my son outgrows it. It will then go back in the skylander boxes i've gotten from stores and into storage and when he's in his late 20's/early 30's he can do what he sees fit with them. Same goes for his power ranger stuff. Will skylanders be this way? Who knows? It prob depends if it stays relevant. Who knew years later Pokemon would still be around, skylander could still be if activision doesn't turn it into another guitar hero. Maybe 20yrs from now we will be playing skylanders 10. Who knows. I collect them cause they are fun and I keep a set sealed cause they are cool to look at and like I said above I want my kid to have his childhood stuff if he wants when Im gone. If he ends up selling it so be it. |

I don't disagree, although in the same breath it's not a given and a crapshoot. I'm not doing it for investment, but simply from a collecting standpoint.

Don't get into Skylanders thinking it's an investment. Get into it because you think the game is fun, you like collecting the figures, etc. If you get into it as an investment, there's about a 95% chance (stat pulled out of my backside) that you'll never make your money back, let alone a significant profit to make it worth your time you invested.
With that said, I keep mine in the package. Not because I plan to sell them, but because A) I like packaging - and all the marketing that goes with it and I can just play with the figures inside the package, so why not? I may break down and open my SWAP Force figures, due to the limited ability to use them inside the packages, because my ability to actually play and enjoy the games comes first. |

I don't tell people how to enjoy the game or toy collecting. But crapshoot/95% chance of loss makes the point.

I just toss them all into the same box. Never plan on selling them so don't care on their condition. I've all ready broke two from being jumbled around in the box when I move it around. Items are too big to store for the possible return on selling them. Lightcore s2 Drobot's Wing fell off and Double Trouble s2 staff broke off. Packaging takes up too much room and I don't like the looks of the figures enough to display them openly.

It's highly unlikely. Do you know how many toy franchises came out in the 80's, versus how many franchises people actually care to spend money on for nostalgia's sake, as adults? Not everything old becomes new again. Added to that, the main appeal of Skylanders is that they're components for a video game (that will have been long since obsolete decades from now), in addition to being neat little static figures. Anyway, as UncleBob posted, I wouldn't recommend to anyone that they buy these, or any current toy for that matter, for long-term investment purposes. Especially not as a 25 - 30 year investment. Where are you going to store all these "just in case" items, in the meantime? People would be better off investing in actual financial investments, like an IRA, 401k, etc. |

Hi guys, didn't expect a quite discussion we have over here... I personally like skylanders because i like the game (have been a spyro fan since spyro in PS) and also the collectable figurines for me is really something.. I haven't got a chance to collect something until this game come out, and i really enjoy collecting ... Thats whats torn me from unboxing my collection.. I even has some double even triple for some favourite character that i fancy... Since i havent unbox any character from giants series, the horror is if i open one i will want to open the others... As for my ssa collection has been 85% unboxed so i think i will unbox all the ssa..
Buts its really nice to hear how all people treat their collection differently.. |

Being boxed takes up too much room and they are much more fun to play with. I have all mine packed away neatly in Bauble storage boxes.

Everything is open and will stay that way.
As far storeage, nothing to really display it, just using the castle case lying on its back with the figures arragned inside. What doesn't fit (Favs, Giants, Adventure Packs, Magic, Battle, and some others) sit on top.
