Saw this on a "Skylanders Game" facebook's wall. Is this for real?

Pretty sure fake as this would the first I have heard/seen a metallic purple lighting rod. I really doubt any special variants would be coming out this late in the game with lighting rod being released months ago.,

It's possible as Lightning Rod's in Wave 5 boxes, plus it looks too perfected for it to be fake, and there are no signs of it being ripped out.

I would think it'd be a little late for an authentic s2 lightning rod.
I'm going with fake.

Would be extremely surprised if this were real.

Someone's trying to imitate the Metallic Purple Cynder. I don't buy it. I always thought they reserved the metallics for the trade show exclusives...

The design on the card backing looks like it wasn't put back straight. Some of the paper that was ripped off is visible. I say painted and poorly glued back.

Like I said on the facebook page, I would need the seller to send me some sort of documented proof that this is real. I have google'd it and found nothing on it. I will call fake until proven otherwise.

Wouldnt surprise me if its legit. We havent found any variants for the new wave yet so sure...i'll bite and say its legit.

Looks pretty good to me. Something to watch for during hunts.

I'm going with fake till more appear. But I dont really see the time difference as an issue with new variants. Remember ssa, Stealth Elf was there from day one and she still got a variant in the last wave

Thing that has me calling fake - so far - is the fact that it took this long to spot a variant for the latest wave, when it's been on the streets for the past 2 weeks or so in NA and longer in Australia.

Had a run in with Cindysbeans on eBay. Not sure I buy this. They supposedly had a package show up opened and missing figures and the USPS worker took pics, but when I called them the delivery guy had no recollection. Based on this I would call a fake unless more start showing up.

Even with the unfortunate rarity of chase variants, with the time wave 5(it is 5 right? losing count) has been out and with all the scalpers I think we'd have seen it earlier.

Couldn't someone ask for a pic of the screen after this person puts it on the portal in Giants so you can see the "special" registration. I feel like that would convince most people.

Well, CindyBeans word is obviously suspect. That store is a scalper, pure and simple. When things go out of stock on Amazon, their listing usually pops up next and a substantial premium price trying to take advantage of those that are a little late.

However, that does not necessarily mean it is not real, disreputable people get lucky sometimes too - and they certainly wouldn't keep it to themselves. TFB has been dabbling with metallic paint lately (Hot Dog E3, for example), and we haven't seen a new chase in a while. Lightning Rod is in the latest wave. And the paint scheme is fairly consistent with the way they have been doing it lately, painted base, eyes painted the normal way. Whoever did it, if it is fake, did a real good job on the packaging and paint. I would not be surprised if it is real.

Regardless, I hope no one is considering giving them $400 for it, real or not. Because otherwise we can obviously take a wait and see approach and see if other chase appearances show up that are consistent, or maybe get confirmation from TFB. At minimum this is a heads up that a new chase *might* be out there.

How about this? Someone here buys it, puts it on the Portal, sees if it's Special, and if it isn't, return it with money back.

depends if the seller gives the money back even...but a good idea

My only concerns are -

1: Why is this the only one that has appeared in the 2-4 weeks (depending on the area) that wave 5 has been out?
2: Why is this the only character that has appeared, when there are normally more than one variant per wave?

There would be more than this one listing if it were real... I would think.

I just doubt it's real but that's just opinion.

He isn't. Just because it has an image of him in that section doesn't mean he's out in the US.

Another reason I am leaning toward fake, is because stones, glitters, golds, silvers, flocked, ice, and glows, have all been featured in triple packs. Thing is, wave 5 triple packs consist of the fright rider triple pack, the hot dog triple pack, and the shroomboom triple pack. The triple with lightning rod came out way back in December, when flocked skylanders were in triple packs.

You can see in this photo where they tried to re-glue the packaging closed over a white tear on the right hand side, I'm calling it FAKE!! Plus, I was fairly certain the metallic variants were only distributed in trade shows... not like that can't change, but going off of what we've known to be accurate so far... def calling it FAKE in my book for now!!

While true Matteo, the fact is here would have been more than one of these types of variants on eBay by now. I think someone should message this seller and ask the. To put it on the portal for people to see, so we see if it registers as "special."

I am happy to confirm that this Lightning Rod is real!

Sorry, its great it's real. I had someone try on ebay to sell me an open fuzzy tree smash from the chips promo. They resealed it so I guess that left a bad taste in my mouth from ebay variants.
Guess I have something to look for, thou I have never seen a special variant to date, I feel like its a treasure hunt.

Chris, any chance you can tell us if Lightning Rod is the only variant in this wave, or if other characters have the chance at being in this wave, that is the same as him?
