I think he means that he was ale to get the "Have it/Need it" checklist, but he doesn't know how to get the collection image, which last I remember is a link at the top. Have you found a new way to get the icons you're still missing yet? I know I have two characters with missing icons, Polar Whirlwind is definitely one of them, I suspect LC Pop Fizz might be the other. I still say someone who has their console connected to a computer should be able to get a screenshot and work from there.

I think he might mean that it's broken, as it has been for me since I signed up a couple of days ago. There's no list of Skylanders to check off, just a header that says "Skylanders Checklist" and then a box beneath that says "Select options below to change the appearance your Skylander collection image." and has a bunch of options in it, but no Skylanders. I can click the temporary link at the bottom to generate a completely empty list or click on the buttons at the top (Skylanders Quick Inserts and Infinity list go to broken pages), but that's it. Maybe there was a user limit to the code and now it's just borked for anyone who joined the party late?

Just checked and it's still working. Nope, it's not that it won't work for new people, it just doesn't work the way you think.
Before you get the checklist, you have to select what you want IN the checklist. This is to make it easier to manage. The options are split into 4 sections: Selected base colors to show (Required) Green Orange Blue Collection flags to show (Required) Missing Ordered Own Other items to show (Optional) Show "chase" Skylanders Show event exclusive Skylanders Show store exclusive Skylanders Miscellanous (Optional - Image only) Show text descriptors for special Skylanders The checklist won't show up until you pick at least one Base colour (Green for SSA, Orange for SG, Blue for SF) and at least one flag (show figures you're missing, show figures you have ordered, show figures you own). FYI, last I knew there's no longer any way to set something to Ordered. I believe putting it back somehow is on the To Do list. The third category is for limiting whether it shows special ones, like "chase' ones like Gold Flameslinger, Event ones like E3 Hot Dog and Store ones like Molten Hot Dog. As it says, the last category is just for making the image. THIS one doesn't do anything, once you switch to the image checkboxes you have the same option, it will list things like "GITD" for a Glow In The Dark variant. I think this is basically for Skylanders which look physically different but look like the standard character in the game. I usually check off EVERYTHING, going from Right to Left, so I end with the ones which will actually show the list, to minimize how many times it has to re-generate the list.

I did all that, nothing pops up. Just re-did it, still nothing popping up. I get a message of "There are no Skylanders in your collection that match the filters you specified." and that's it.
-Doug Edit: Just figured out the problem. If you don't select "missing," the list will NEVER show up unless you've previously set up a list, I guess. Some basic directions or hints about that would definitely be something to add to the page, IMHO. Otherwise, it just looks broken unless you stumble across the solution like I did by just clicking on everything randomly in frustration.

Tiker: I noticed someone requested a way to show multiples. Since I have a multiple or two, this interests me, too.
From an Entry standpoint, you could replace the Checkboxes with a counter with spinner (up/down arrows to change the value). Or maybe a text box and a small "Go" button to indicate you're done editing. That way it isn't busy recalculating as you type, and is less likely to get tripped up by a typo (programming doesn't like letters when it expects numbers, LOL!) In this way you could also re-introduce the Ordered capability. A value of "0.5" would indicate that you have it on order, "1.5" means 1 owned and 1 on order. Or, to be REALLY flexible, "0.1" means you have one on order, "0.2" means you have two on order, "1.3" means you own 1, and have another 3 on order, etc. As for displaying it in the image, I suggest however you managed the text labels like "GITD". If the number of figures is greater than 1, display the number in the lower right corner. Maybe a "x2", "x3", etc. to make it clear to outsiders what this number is.

Ah, yes, I guess both me and Tiker missed mentioning that as obvious, or rather common sense, even though as you point it it's actually easy to miss, LOL! Exactly, it works on your current list. When you're new, EVERYTHING is marked as "Missing", so you have to say you want the missing figures in the list so you can pick them. I haven't tried, but I would also always make sure "Own" is always checked, not sure if the list will remove a figure once you flag it as "Owned". As I said, I check off EVERYTHING. I mean that literally. Leaving stuff unchecked is just a luxury, to minimize the length of the list. While you're still getting the hang of it, I suggest doing the same. MAYBE leave off the Chase/Event/Store ones, if you haven't hunted down any special figures.

The (temporary) link is just below the check list filters. It will be moved to the top once I make a few changes for it to work. I haven't found a new method for the icons yet. What I'm thinking is creating empty tiles with the base colors (green, orange, blue, etc.) and then taking the face of the actual character and putting it in myself. I think I can do that. I'll end up doing this for all of the character tiles (existing and new) to have a common style between all of the images. This will allow me to have different icons for variants as well. The only thing I need right now if I'm going to go this route is time. |

The first two columns of the filters require at least one item checked. (The column headers have a "required" in them.) The filter options are to select what you want to see. Previously the page worked the opposite way where it showed everything and filtered out what you don't want to see. It didn't work too well. The other links at the top are indeed broken. I have not finished the pages for them yet. |

I'm still tossing ideas around in my head on how to do this. I like check boxes on the list because it is a quick way to mark what you have and don't have. Someone who creates an account today isn't going to want to type 1, mouse click, type 1, mouse click, type 1, etc. Just a click, click, click, etc. The previous version of the site had character links that would point to a page with details about the specific toy. I was collecting data about what characters did in what games (S1 Bash appeared as S1 Bash, max level 10 for SSA, max level 15 for Giants - Orange base Legendary Stealth Elf appears as Stealth Elf in SSA, max level 10... etc.). I plan on bringing these pages back but could add better inventory options on these pages. This would mean that you did have to click on a link to indicate 5 copies of a character, 3 on order, etc. At one point I was even thinking about adding a method to specify which character is on what upgrade path. (Spyro in box 1 is on first path, Spyro in box 2 is on second path, etc.) If I did this it would make more sense to have inventory control on a page specific to the toy and not with the check list page. Showing the toy count on the image list is easy. I could add an option to show or not show to the script. |

What I plan on adding to help out is some form of web based XMPP chat client for a chat room. If I'm not sleeping, eating, traveling, etc. I'm on the web somewhere working on one of my projects and am sitting in a generally empty XMPP chat room - "tiker@conference.funkymonkey.org". Once I add a chat client to the site you'll be able to quickly click on it and ask for help if you're stuck on something. Otherwise you'll be able to use your own XMPP client (jabber.org / google talk (not hangouts) / etc.) and join the chat room. If I am away you'll be able to say "hey - having a problem with the skylanders site - view the thread on darkspryo" or whatever as well. I don't visit every message board every day. |

I think that's far too much for what people are running into. Just add a text note saying "Unless you check missing in box 2, nothing at all will show up." The problem isn't that we can't figure out that we have to check at least one box in the first two columns, as both columns say "required" underneath. It's that the way it's set up, it looks like we're configuring how we want the list to look instead of how to get the "have it/need it" list to pop. I know that I didn't want missing characters showing on my graphical printout, so I didn't select "missing" until I finally just got frustrated and started clicking everything. A note about this (or a link to a FAQ page) would eliminate this issue and prevent you from having to be online to answer these sorts of questions over and over again. -Doug

I can add an FAQ page to the site for questions that have been asked or what I think might be asked. I started adding a FAQ section in the original post of this thread but I may put it on the site. What if you have a question that isn't on the FAQ? Using you as an example, you thought the site was broken and left. If there was a "click here to chat and ask questions" option would you have used it? I'm online regardless even without this project. I have projects relating to World of Warcraft, XMPP / Jabber instant messaging, trophy feeds for PS3, database application development for specific hobbies, etc. I'm all over the place and I can't keep going all over the place to find out if someone has a new question I haven't thought about. |

To be honest, if there was a "chat" option only, then no, I'd have passed right on by due to the fact that so many "chat" boxes on various sites/services are either unmanned or run by stellarly less than helpful AI. If there was a FAQ link, I'd have definitely clicked it and started going through it. If you really want to implement a chat, go ahead, I was just pointing out that most of the questions I've seen have been relatively simple and would require much less effort and time, overall, to put into a FAQ versus remaining online at nearly all times manning a virtual "service desk" for the site. -Doug

I must agree, a chat option isn't very appealing. I know a lot of people would rather find help themselves than "bother" someone about it (and no matter how much you might say "I won't be bothered", people would STILL rather try to find a solution themselves. It's just human nature). So yes, an FAQ would be far better than a chat. And, bonus, easier to implement.
In this particular case, DarkChylde skipped the most needed checkbox because he was thinking of the final image, not realizing these checkboxes are for the Checklist ONLY, that the image has its own set of checkboxes. Having the "Image Only" Text Descriptors checkbox there doesn't help, either. Let's face it, the options for the checklist and the options for the image are always going to be different. People will always want different settings, so it would be too messy to combine them. The checkboxes should be clearly labelled as being Checklist options only. He's right: For the checklist we of course want Missing figures, to check them off, but for the image it makes the image too big and confusing, especially to outsiders. For the missing pictures, I like the idea of making the colour of the square match the base colour, but I'm not sure where you'd get the profile pic... If it's in-game, you might as well get it with the colour circle from the Collections section. Quote: LloydDXZX
Quick Insert on the top? Looks like that isn't programmed yet. Leave it alone. To add guys to your collection, check off the base colour (I suggest clicking both Green and Orange, if you have both SSA and Giants figures), and click the flags you want, making sure to include Missing, and Own is useful too. Then the list will appear, showing all the normal characters (check off the Chase, Event and Store characters' checkboxes if you want to see EVERYBODY). Then you can check the box of everyone you have. I don't know how Quick Insert could be any faster than this anyway.

I noticed the alphabetical, I had wondered about the ordering, I would have expected the Giants to be first since there's only one per element.
Lightning Rod is alphabetical: After Jet Vac, before Sonic Boom Pop Fizz is alphabetical: After Scarlet Ninjini (she's alphabetized as Ninjini, to group her with Ninjini), before Spyro.
