That's another really weird thing about TFB's release schedule since early March. Apparently they didn't do a chase variant for Wave 4. They have gone dark completely on information lately.

The problem with this thread is that it isn't very specific. People here are in all different countries and different parts of those countries and are all looking for different things.

Chase Variants are special Skylanders that are different colored and are very rare. The S:SA variants came preloaded at Level 5 with 2100 coins, while Giants variants show up as "Special".

Look them up on eBay.

I doubt they are/were that rare but my Drill Sergeant came at Lv.5 wih like 2000+ gold.

I think they would. I listed the more rare ones that would be by my defination more chase variants, but in all technicalities, GiTD Sonic Boom, Fright Rider, Cynder, and Gold Flameslinger would count as well.

My understanding is this.

Chase variant as opposed to in-game variant. An in-game variant looks the same in-game as the figure, like Scarlet Ninjini in her red dress as opposed to Ninjini's purple dress, you see the red dress in the game.

A Chase variant, the physical figure looks different (like my Glow In The Dark Cynder), but in the game it just uses the code of the standard, it looks normal (My GITD Cynder just looks like a normal S2 Cynder when playing her in the game).

To me, it seems like the Level 5/2100 Gold thing was to make up for them not looking different in the game, LOL!

So Chase variants would include (but are not be limited to) GITD ones, Glitter ones, Flocked ones, Stone ones, etc. etc. The rarity isn't exactly part of the definition, but they're released in limited numbers, so they end up being rare. It's not a part of the definition, it's a side-effect of the system.

I keep meaning to start a glossary thread for stuff like this, LOL! I have chase variant, in-game variant, newlander, GITD, SSA, SG... Stuff like that.

IMO, to chase variants for the S1 are the gold, silver, GITD, and clear versions. S2 chase are the stone, glitter, and white-flocked versions. Toy Fair versions would also be chase to me, but I think they are in their own category.

Don't forget the E3 Chrome Spyro.

When referring to Skylanders I consider E3 another toy fair. I realize that is inaccurate.

Hi guys I have just recently started playing and collecting skylanders, yes I know im late, but im really enjoying it, I did not know where to post this but because im trying to collect all the figures now I was wondering will there be anymore chase variants for giants, so I can keep a look out for them. By the way I live in the Uk, because I know the waves are released at different times.

My collection so far is camo, jade flashwing, polar whirlwind, Scarlett Ninjini, and the E3 Chrome Spyro.

This is rather how I feel about it as well. A chase figure is rather by definition one that is only released 1 out of every x number of packs in a set or wave. That's the "chase" part of the term, a figure made in more limited quantities than the other figures of the set or wave.

Though in a case such as with skylanders there are the ones like GiTD Sonic Boom and Red Drill Seargent that were released normally with little to no rarity. These aren't really chase variants yet are commonly considered as such as they most closely relate to these as being non-in game variants; thus leaving them in an odd grey area. However, TRUE chase variants are things such as glitter, flocked, clear, and stone.

Thirdly, I've always understood the name as coming from the idea that as figures that are only different in physical form, not in the game, that only collectors who Chase down every figure would for sure want to Chase/track down these variants. Since they aren't different in the game, there's less desire, except to people who Chase.

1. So during SSA, which stores got boxes of 12 GITD Zap or Crystal Wham Shell? Because I missed out. Must not have been my Walmart, all they ever had we're tons of the Red DS. Big difference between 12 to a box and 1 out of every x number of boxes.

2. Definitions don't change. All chase variants are variants, but not all variants are chase variants. Just as all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

3. The name is chase, as in chase them down. If the shelf is full of store exclusives, there's no chase to it.

I've only twice ever seen a store exclusive variant, when I lucked across my GITD Cynder, and when I got my Molten Hot Dog. Doesn't seem all that common to me.

The point is they are way more common than the real chase variants.

I've never seen a Target exclusive nor Glitter Sprocket, doesn't mean they are equal in rarity. GiTD Cynder is way too common. I still see those and have been seeing them since day 1 of Giants. It still remains that the store variants like Molten, Jade, and GiTD Cynder/Sonic Boom are shipped by the box full while things like Glitters and Stone are shipped with only 1 out of so ever many boxes. Quantities are HIGHLY limited in release and production of chase variants as is intended. The more normal variants like Molten or GiTD Sonic Boom are limited in release and production as well, don't get me wrong, just not as limited as a chase variant. This brings me back to that grey area I mentioned then being stuck in in my last post.

Well, in the end my point is that I'm not convinced that the term "Chase" is linked to rarity. So even if store exclusives are flooding the shelves, they could still be called Chase. My experience on the forums has been that people use it to mean a figure which doesn't look different in the game, which is true of these store exclusives.

Which makes sense with my understood definition of "Only true collectors will Chase these down to own them, will HAVE to have them, they aren't even different in game"

Which doesn't make sense with the preoffered definition of "You have to Chase them to find them, they're so rare"

(To be honest, the latter makes more sense for the origin of the term, but my definition fits how it's being used better)

Skylanders isnt the only thing with chase variants. Look at Hot Wheels and Heroclix... And plenty more on top of that.

Yes, I've had plenty of experience with chase figures in the Minimates toyline. Another series that has had chase figures on top of limited store exclusives and convention exclusives such as toy fair or comicon. The chase figures were always the 1 special figure of a wave that was more rare with the pack it contained only released like 1 per box. These being very hard to find like Black Suit Spidey and Elektra in a black outfit (first 2 to come to mind), and while there were ones like Ultimate Green Goblin who was only in a special pack at TRU for awhile, he was by no means a chase figure, just a regular TRU exclusive.

Skylanders is no different. Yes, the non-in game variants are rare and are similar to chase variants in that they aren't special in game, but they are still in a class of their own as more of a special store exclusive than an actual chase variant.

EDIT: I just looked up the definition of chase figure and if I'm reading it right, which I may not be at 1am, if we are to go by true definitions it is as follows:

Variant: Red lipped Chill
Variants are mistakes on the production line. I believe red lipped Chill is the only actual variant Skylander.

Chase: Legendaries, GiTD, Blue Bash, Red Drill Seargent, Dark Spyro, Molten, Jade, Granite, Gnarly, Scarlet, Polar, Royal, Punch, etc.
Chase figures are intentional variations made by the production company. These being most of what we've called a variant.

Super Chase: (Yes, this is a term.) Glitter, flocked, clear, pearl, stone etc.
While similar to chase figures in that they are intentional variations, super chase are released typically without proper public announcement in very limited quantities.

Then you have ones such as Gold Flocked Prism Break, blue chrome Chop Chop, and chrome Spyro which would best be described as exclusives. While yes, ones such as legendaries or molten are store exclusives, in this case it is more being used to define convention or event exclusives. Such exclusives can at times even be numbered and have been in cases with other toy/collectables.

Also, to be honest, while I like my red drilly, I'd rather own his original as the paint job is pretty neat from what I've seen.
Btw, if you reset a chase, does that remove the gold/level bonus? I suppose not, just wanting to make sure before switching paths.

It may be hard to find some figures if you started collecting later, but I don't consider a variant to have the "chase" moniker if I expected to be able to buy it from a certain store that day. To me, finding a chase variant is like getting struck by lightning.

I'd also like to point out that the term "chase variant" is a contradiction.

A chase and a variant are two similar but different things. Chase is when a production company intentionally changes an aspect of a figure in any way shape or form and releases said version in more limited quantities than the normal counterpart calling for collectors to "chase" it down. A variant is a mistake in production occurs causing a figure to look different than intended (Red lipped Chill). Variants are only released until the production company realizes the mistake and issues the correct figure.

The key difference between the terms being intent of change in the figures appearence.

Reseting DOES lose the gold/level bonus- resetiing always puts the 'lander back to lv1 with no gold-
Not that it'll take long to get back to over 2100 gold and lv 5 if you do want to reset..

Even though I'm not sure if I have anyone who started at Level 5/2100, I did read somewhere on these forums about someone who did reset such a figure and it was reset to Level 1/0 Gold, and was complaining that he didn't think he should lose that head start. (As far as I'm concerned, Reset is "Reset to Store-New", Level 5 with 2100 is Store-New for those figures, so I agree)

Too bad.
Oh well, if I do get s2 drilly, I'll change s1 red to the rocket path so that I can take advantage of s2's wowpow.

I agree that it should reset to lv5 2100 gold, but i can see how that might have been a bit too much effort to program in for very little benefit
