I've been looking for good Skylanders but I can't make up my mind. What are some recommendations of good characters?

You will answers that vary on how you like to play the game.

Here are some of my suggestions:

S2 Hex is good with her Wow Pow.

Stealth Elf is just plain good. Some will call her over powered, but I call her good. smilie Her Wow Pow is pretty lame.

Double Trouble is good also.

Hot Head is probably my favorite giant.

On a side note. I find Ninjini to be a little over rated. Why? She has that annoying delay in attacking and it makes her easy to hit if you get unlucky.

Personally my least favorite skylander has to be Wrecking Ball. I was mad when they remade him instead of Voodood. I get the idea of the kids like him. However, I find him very boring.

Stealth Elf
FlameSlinger
Boomer
Trigger Happy
Swarm
Flashwing

Least favorite to play:
Wrecking ball

Personally, I find Hex, Fright Rider, Ninjini, Hot Head, Stealth Elf, Zook, Chill, Cynder, and Bouncer to be highly effective.

I find Eruptor, Boomer, Shroomboom, Whirlwind, and Eye Brawl to be ineffective.

Individual play-styles will vary of course.
But since you asked for opinions, there you have mine.

I'd say that the ones you want are :-
Undead - Fright Rider/Chop Chop(but only if its S2)
Life - Stealth Elf/Tree Rex
Water - Thumpback/Chill
Fire - Flameslinger/Hot Dog
Air - Lightning Rod/Whirlwind
Earth - Prism Break/Flashwing
Tech - Boomer/Drobot
Magic - Voodood/Ninjini

Either one for each element is good, so it all depends on how you want fight with them.

I would say to find one that fits the play style you enjoy most. Basher, Lobber, Distance Shooter etc. And then figure out what guys you don't have are that type of character. At this point if you still haven't narrowed it down to 1-2, then see what elements you are missing (If any), or what one you think looks best.

Picking a new Skylander is very subjective and from the looks of it you are already getting mixed results. Buy Eye-Brawl, Don't buy Eye-Brawl.

Try to figure out what you personally are going to enjoy the most. And don't worry as much about what all the other people here have as their favorites.

Trigger Happy is actually very good also. His path where he flings the safes is very powerful and a very good ranged attack. His guns are not good at all. Only downside from Trigger is he has very low HP and on Nightmare mode he can get 1 or two shot.

Boomer is good. Only draw back about him right now is he is insanely expensive for a non variant skylander. I would pick up Drobot!

If you ask 10 people, you will get 10 different answers.

I like shroom boom, prism break, drobot, double trouble, swarm, eye brawl, zap, stealth elf, slam bam and fright rider.

I am forcing myself to try each has skylander, because once you start getting all the upgrades, some become much more fun to play with.

When I am stuck somewhere I tend to grab Ninjini or Flashwing to clear an area. It's mostly personal preference. I also like Ghost Roaster but he's much harder to find now. Fright Rider is also good. I like Whirlwind since she can move fast. I play Stealth Elf a lot. And Hot Dog just cracks me up.

I found Hot Dog (and Molten Hot Dog) amusing until I notice that their armour is RIDONKULOUSLY low! It amused me to put the Bone Hat on them for the amusing special way they wear it, but I had to ditch it for the Trucker Hat because their armour needs all the help they can get! :S

Buy the ones you think are cool. Play, enjoy.

Trying to "game" the system just sucks the fun out of it. The whole thing is pretty easy as it is, when you have more than half a dozen figures it's impossible to lose as essentially they just work like extra lives.

As mentioned, everybody likes different figures so just go with what you like, watch their preview videos to see if you like the look of them.

DROBOT since he does an INSANE amount of damage and is AWESOME (in my opinion)! smilie

Spyro of course, but I am assuming that you have him already! smilie

I like Wrecking Ball for his cuteness, but I wouldn't recommend him for his attacks. In my opinion, they are insanely weak (at least when you first start out, but he gets better as you upgrade him). smilie

Camo just because he is cute (in my opinion), and his attacks are pretty good once they have been upgraded (I have his vine path right now).

CYNDER. She is awesome because she is fast, and once upgraded, VERY powerful (in my opinion)!

Double Trouble is pretty darn powerful once upgraded as well.

Hot Dog is good, but as one user said he has VERY low defense...but you can fix that up with a good hat! smilie

Zap is also good once he is upgraded (just as with Wrecking Ball), but is not very good when he first starts out. He is fast though!

Whirlwind is an awesome character in my opinion as well! She is pretty powerful once she is upgraded, and is quite fast!

Flashwing is good as well, once upgraded. She is pretty fast, but if you want a REALLY good fast AND powerful Skylander, I suggest looking towards Stealth Elf. smilie

I would recommend a Giant, but sense all we have is Tree Rex and Eye Brawl so far, and they aren't really worth mentioning in my opinion, then I will just leave my list as it already is. Although I listed a bazillion Sklyanders on it, LOL! smilie

My advice is to just do some research, look at you tube gameplay videos, check out what their upgrade paths are- i personally completely agree with some of the above and disagree with others. My go-to character is Stealth Elf, she's fast, she regenerates and on the sword path you do crazy damage in short amount of time- on the other hand i think someone like boomer is terrible, attacks are weak, short ranged and he is slow as- yet people seem to love him- its def all personally preference

Here is my thinking on Boomer. He at one time was probably the easiest skylander to find. Now, he is the hardest or second hardest to find. You can argue Wham Shell is the hardest to find as he was only widely available for a short time. That is not the topic of this post so we will leave it at that.

People seem to love the skylander that is not out yet or is hard to find. I personally have never loved or hated Boomer. He has always kind of been in the middle for me. I find him to be kind of blah. Anyways, as he became more and more rare over time his popularity increased. That is why some people think of him as being a good skylander. I am not saying he is or is not or that everyone falls into this category, but in my opinion that is why some people think he is really good.

This follows the same logic as Wham Shell last summer after he was released and was very very very very hard to find he was almost everyone's favorite skylander. You can even draw relation to Giants this year. Remember when we had the Swarm HQ, Ninjini HQ, and all giants HQ for the favoriote lander mess? If I remember right Eye Brawl, Thumpback, and Ninjini were not even out at the time when that crap started. Yet, we had people saying that Ninjini was their favorite skylander. I come from the school of you can't knock something before you try it and you can't say something is the best before you try it either.

So in my ramblings I am trying to get this across, people will have their favorites. Word of advice, find a three pack with ones that you think you might like buy it and figure out your play style. Go from that and buy which ones you want. My personal feeling that if you are like a lot of us on here you will eventually buy them all as you can't really complete the game without them all. Yeah you can 100% it and all that but can not fully upgrade you landers with out all of the figures.

I Agree and Disagree...

First I agree with getting the 3-packs (More bang for your bucks).

As for Wham-Shell, yes he is hard to find in a single but that is because they are selling him in the Castle case at TRU. My TRU has 3-6 of them every time I go in. So, yes you may have to spend a little more but at least your getting something else in return, and yes trying to find him for $9.99 may be difficult, he is truly not as hard to find as Boomer.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. The only thing that differs between him and Boomer a year ago or even 8 months ago he was everywhere. Wham Shell has never really been everywhere. Also, some places are sold out of the castles. The TRU's I visit have not had any in for awhile. Was just trying to point out both sides of the story on that.

I kind of hate TRU for the way they do things. It has not been as bad this year as it was for S:SA but they are overpriced on everything. I think 30 bucks is a little steep for the castle and figure. I bought one however, as I wanted an extra wham shell and thought at the time it was going to be the only way to get an extra other than going to Ebay. That being said, that sometimes are still the best place to find some figures and I of course will pay the extra buck for them.

The castle case... well... I've seen better cases for Skylanders. But I guess Wham-Shell's worth it... if you're a collector.
Ultimately, i recommend buying Giants, they look pretty cool, have the best stats in-game, and can perform feats of strength. What more could you want?... until SF comes out...

I'd disagree with the giants, sure they are cool looking, but normally you can get 2 normal 'landers for the price of one giant, so you double your chances of finding a character you love.
Also even if they have the "best" stats most of them are very slow, and alot seem to play in very simialr ways smilie
If you are on a budget, go for the little guys i think- unless a giant steals your heart of course smilie

I see what you are saying. Couple of things as far as giants. You need one to complete the game 100%. Which would be knocked out with Tree Rex. So you could really get by with just Tree Rex but I think each of the Giants and regular sized figs have their advantages.

As far as the giants being slow.... Yes, they are slow. They are Giants after all. Do heroic challenges and get their speed up. Will it be like stealth elf running around? No. But, they do help.

I'd say that the ones you want are :-
Undead - Fright Rider/Chop Chop(but only if its S2)
Life - Stealth Elf/Tree Rex
Water - Thumpback/Chill
Fire - Flameslinger/Hot Dog
Air - Lightning Rod/Whirlwind
Earth - Prism Break/Flashwing
Tech - Boomer/Drobot
Magic - Voodood/Ninjini

Either one for each element is good, so it all depends on how you want fight with them.

Comes down to what you like to play.

Undead = Fright Rider / Ghost Roaster (if you can find him)
Life = Zook / Shroomboom / Tree Rex (one of my favorite Giants)
Fire = Eruptor / Hot Dog / Hot Head
Air = Lightning Rod / Jet Vac
Earth = Bash / Flashwing (one of the Best skylanders IMO)
Tech = Trigger Happy (my favorite) / Sprocket
Water = Zap / Whamshell (if you can find him)
Magic = Voodood (if you can find him) / Pop Fizz

I also tend to lean towards fast moving range attack skylanders.

Magic - I'd say Spyro but he only comes in SSA starter packs so he may be a little hard to get.

You can always buy Dark, Legendary, and series 2 Spyro instead of series 1 Spyro, you know (they may be a little hard to get, but they all come in single packs so you an buy them without buying SSA). smilie

There is no reason to say "Giants are slow". Sure most are slow. But others are not. I have made a spreadsheet of all the Skylanders we own. All are upgraded with all heroics etc. And if i sort by speed alone, the top 3 are infact giants.

1) Ninjini
2) L-Bouncer
3) Bouncer
4) L-Trigger Happy

I don't have Scarlet Ninjini but assume she will be up there too. Just because most are slow doesn't mean all are.

To be fair the bottom of the list is Tree-Rex, Crusher, and Swarm. But seems unfair to say because all Giants are not slow. This is of course excluding any dash type moves that Skylanders have to add to their speed. But I do not count that as some regular Skylanders do not have this type of move either.

Agreed, and on her Pook Blade path, she can put out tons of damage like you said in a very short amount of time.

Side note on that..... Dark Spyro was never released in America in a single pack. Only way to get him was by the starter pack.

Ah yes, my bad! I just included him in my post since you can buy him all by himself (as long as you get him on Amazon, Ebay, etc. outside of the 3DS pack). I must've gotten him mixed up with actually being in a single pack when he is not, though. Oops! smilie

i find S2 prism break criminally overpowered with his wowpow.
you can just spam x+square continuously and put out something like 180 damage per second. and no i'm not exaggerating. those laser juggernauts on nightmare mode die in like three pulses, it's silly.
this is on the golden crystal path mind you
