Can someone break it down for me:
How many UNIQUE skylanders are recognized with SSA (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE magic items are recognized in SSA (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE sidekicks are recognized in SSA (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE skylanders are recognized with SG (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE magic items are recognized in SG (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE sidekicks are recognized in SG (non 3DS/iOS) in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE skylanders are recognized in Universe in the inventory count?
How many UNIQUE magic items are recognized in Universe in the inventory count?
Best Answer:
SSA Skylanders is 37--core 32 + 4 Legendary + Dark Spyro = 37 green base skylanders
SSA Magic Items is 12 - 4 location items (Dragon's Peak, Pirate Seas, Darklight Crypt, Empire of Ice) + 8 magic items (Healing Elixir, Anvil Rain, Ghost Pirate Swords, Hidden Treasure, Sky-Iron Shield, Sparx the Dragonfly, Time Twister Hourglass, Winged Boots)
SSA Sidekicks - 4, not confirmed if it adds to inventory count
SG Skylanders is 99--37 from SSA it recognizes, 32 regular (24 S2 and 8 newlanders) + 8 giants + 8 lightcore + 6 legendary + 8 named variants (Polar, Gnarly, Punch, Granite, Royal, Jade, Molten and Scarlet) = 62 orange base skylanders. + 37 green base skylanders from SSA
SG Magic Items - confirmed regular and retail exclusive magic items add to inventory count
SG Sidekicks - There are 8 (4 - SSA and 4 - SG), SSA sidekicks confirmed it adds to inventory count.
Universe Skylanders - No information given
Does the SSA chase variants (GITD/gold/silver/clear/flocked) get recognized in the inventory count in SSA? In SG?
Does the SSA exclusives such as E3 and Toy Fair versions (Metallic Purple Cynder, Pearl Hex, Chrome Spyro) get recognized in the inventory count in SSA? In SG?
Does the SSA retail exclusive magic items (Volcanic Vault) get recognized in the inventory countl in SSA? In SG?
Does the SG chase variants (GITD/glitter,granite,white flocked) variants get recognized in the inventory count?
Does the SG exclusives such as Toy Fair versions (Blue Chop Chop) get recognized in the inventory count in SSA? In SG?
Does the SG retail exclusive magic items (Golden Catapult) get recognized in the inventory count in SSA? In SG?
Best Answer:
SSA chase variants (GITD, clear, gold, silver, Peal Hex, Metallic Purple Cynder, Chrome Spyro) do not add to the inventory count in SSA or SG.
SSA exclusive variants (Peal Hex, Metallic Purple Cynder, Chrome Spyro) do not add to the inventory count in SSA or SG.
SSA retail exclusive magic items (Volcanic Vault) - No answer.
SG chase variants (white flocked, glitter, rock/granite, Amazon Gold Flameslinger) variants showo up as special and add to the inventory count in SG. Unknown in SSA.
SG exclusive variants (Blue Chop Chop) adds to inventory count in SG. Unknown in SSA.
SG retail exclusive magic items (Golden Catapult) - adds to inventory count
This exercise is less about understanding all of the number of skylanders and variants as it is the impact of chase, in game variants, color variants, magic item variants/exclusives have on inventory count and towards game totals and completion accolades.
Thanks!

For SSA your number of 37 is correct.
For SG it would be a bit more complicated. In addition to the 37 from SSA it recognizes, 32 regular (24 S2 and 8 newlanders) + 8 giants + 8 lightcore + 6 legendary + 8 named variants (Polar, Gnarly, Punch, Granite, Royal, Jade, Molten and Scarlet) = 62 orange base skylanders. Then add the 37 from SSA = 99 total for all the the non-'special' figures recognized. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've forgotten something. |

I was surprised with my game, because it counted the GITD Cynder that came with the walmart giants starter pack (in game, it was simply called Special Cynder, if i recall correctly), and yet when i used the Platinum Treasure Chest from skylanders battlegrounds, it didnt count as a new figure.
Weird. |

All of the "Hard to find" variants come up as Special also.
Here is a list of them: Stone - Zook, Whirlwind Sparkle - Sonic Boom, Sproket, Hot Head White Flocked - Stump smash, Euruptor, Prism Break |

^ So, are the characters listed separately in the skylanders list? Does the icon for these variants look different? Are these variants required for any completion percentages in the game?
I really don't care if a variant comes up as "special"---I only care if the skylanders count in the various elements go up (and thus is added to the roster) AND if they are required for any accolades or medals. Again folks, I'm also wanting this information on Universe. I see a lot of potential mis information here and maybe we can use this thread to define this definitively--i can build a datasheet for future portal masters. and--if my quest is not required because someone has already done the work---all the better.

the rock, sparkle and GITD and Gold (giant releases not SSA) will show up as special ingame.
bout collection i dont know. havent finished SSA yet so wont do giants till then. also been mostly on 3ds . but on 3ds special versions dont show up at the collection screen, nor do they trigger the normal version. so its liek you dont own the char according to the collection.

when i first put my GITD in my game, it was already level 5 and had 2000 gold. i'm guessing that's what all "special" characters get.

To keep the conversation focused, I've edited the original post with the current best answer given, so others can confirm and/or debate the information. I've detailed answer requirements now so hopefully I'm capturing it all. Some of this information I've seen recently in other threads and I may pull that information in and ask the experts here to confirm.

Yes. Quote: GhostRoaster
I'll check this and get back to you. I know it counts in Universe. Quote: GhostRoaster
The special variants released for SG are recognized in SG and add to the count. Those released for SSA (that I possess at least) do not get recognized as special and do not add to the count. Universe is the same. Quote: GhostRoaster
"Special" figures DO count towards completion of goals. I had the accolade for having 40 orange based figures at least two waves ago. |

cool thanks. I've edited the original post on sidekicks--can anyone confirm if they add to the inventory count? I'm hoping not since they are completely useless from a fighting perspective.
to clarify your post above, let's take the following scenario: I have regular run of the mill S2 Stump Smash. I also have the white flocked S2 Stump Smash. Are you saying I'll have two Stump Smash in my inventory, one normal and one showing "Special"? If so, is the icon any different?

Yes, they do add to your collection total in SG. I'd have to boot up SSA to check there. Also, they are not totally useless in combat. I thought they were too, but when we got them we let them follow us around for a while and realized that (at least in SG) they actually drew fire. The enemies treated them like a combatant and attacked them. So consider them an indestructible meat shield. It's not much, but they are better than nothing. Quote: GhostRoaster
Yes. I checked. Again, I only checked SG, not SSA. Quote: GhostRoaster
Yes. I can't speak to that specific example, but I have three Sonic Booms in my inventory. Series 1, Series 2 and GitD (showing as 'special'). In that particular case the special one shows with the same icon as series 1 but has the series two orange border. |

Yes, that video effectively answers many of my questions in one two minute video. Excellent reference and I'm glad you found it. I am curious as to how conflicting "special" characters are handled...for example GITD Sonic Boom and Glitter Sonic Boom---two specials?

What about a count of unique CHARACTERS and items, instead of what are recognised as unique in game? If you forget all of the recolored, legendary and spray painted gold stuff, the collection is much more manageable.

^ Yeah, I noticed that. No Scarlet either...but I think that's literally everything else...Gotta admit--that's awesome. I also notice he doesn;t have the Toy Fair SG Chop Chop, which I believe would come up "Special".
Quote: Graz73
I agree...I'd love to see in game stats for the base stuff and then layer in the legendary and in game variants and then everything else, but at least the video tells me what should happen. Still curious if I had a GITD Sonic and a Glitter Sonic if they would ring up as two "Specials".

the platinum hidden treasure dos not even have a "special" tag, its chip inside is the exact same as the regular version.
and I just wanted to remind everyone that Lost Islands dos have 2 exclusive skylanders: Cupid Flameslinger and Lucky Boomer |
